Dead in the Water

Did I Mention I Hate Hospitals?

(Amanda’s POV)
“So why do we have to go to the morgue again?” Erelin asked as I heard a knock at the front door. “Oh, I haven’t been in town for almost a week yet and my sister is already trying to hook me up with a guy.” I said rolling my eyes as I went to answer the door.

“I have been thinking today.” Elissa replied walking into my apartment as if she owned the place after I opened the door.

“That’s scary.” Erelin replied laughing.

“Hey.” Elissa said.

“Well?” I asked.

“My, are we pushy today.” Elissa replied as I grabbed my black jacket. A slayer has to look stylish.

“Well let’s see when you call and wake your sister up at an early time of the morning, I think I deserve to be a little pushy.” I said laughing.

“Ok. I am sorry. What more can I say?” Elissa replied.

I gave her a look as we left the apartment. “So I was thinking that I need to find Erelin a man too.” Elissa said as we walked out to my car. Erelin had taken a bottle of water with her and spit out what she had taken a sip of in her mouth.

“I don’t think that is going to be a problem.” I replied getting into my car.

“Oh you have a boyfriend?” Elissa pressed from the backseat.

“Not exactly.” Erelin replied shooting me a help me look.

“Erelin is just talking right now to guys in general. I mean it is somewhat hard to start dating one and say oh by the way I am a possible vampire slayer. She wants to find one who will love her for who and what she is first.” I said trying my best to get Elissa off the topic at hand.

“Ah. Well anyway, it is nice for us to be together again. It feels like old times. We were the three musketeers.” Elissa replied.

“Um, no you forgot that we used to have Crystal in the group.” Erelin replied.

“How is she?” Elissa asked.

“Well she took your “death” hard but eventually got over it, found a guy, got married and has a newborn daughter.” I said.

“It is better that she thinks I am dead then. It sounds like she has a nice life for herself.” Elissa said. “Oh, you want to turn left here at this light. The hospital will be a block down once you turn and sit on the right side of the street.” Elissa added as we were driving.

I pulled into the hospital parking lot and Elissa snuck us in using her persuasion power once we had snuck past the ER section of the hospital. I hated hospitals. I always have. I had a bad experience once in one. I had pneumonia when I was seventeen and it was a depressing time. I hate needles and it seemed the only way to get fluids and medicines in me was through IVs not to mention there were other sick kids in the section I was in.

I met a boy there who was around my age. We were the oldest out of all the kids in the pediatric hospital because of our age, yet we were under eighteen. Since we were under the age of eighteen we had to be admitted to the children’s hospital. I hated seeing little kids die from cancer and other things; hence, it was a depressing time for me.

The boy had some sort of surgery and had a broken leg from a car accident that he was recuperating. He was cute however. I met him when the nurses were trying to get me to take a walk to get my strength back when I was feeling better. I cannot remember his name however now after these years. I heard this singing and someone playing a guitar as I made my walking round one day. I looked in this room to see him playing a guitar as he sat in a wheelchair. We bonded over music.

I ended up getting worse from the pneumonia when the doctors told my mother I was getting better. They almost thought they were going to lose me at one point because I had it so bad. I remember it was late at night one night and I was half out of it from all the medicines they had me on. The boy came into my room and sang in my ear. My mother had gone home for the night to rest. He also had told me not to worry that I would be ok. He knew all I needed was just some encouragement.

When I awoke the next morning, I started feeling better and there were flowers on the table in my room from him. I asked the nurses about him and they said the doctors released him to go home. I never got his phone number to thank him. That was the last I ever saw of him in the two weeks I was in the hospital.

“Amanda, we are here.” Elissa said as we approached the door to the morgue, snapping me out of my thoughts.

“Are you ok?” Erelin asked.

“Yeah.” I said as she clutched my arm tightly.

“What? I hate seeing dead people.” Erelin replied as we walked in. I just shook my head. I do not know what the problem was. She saw them all the time walking around as vampires. These dead people just do not move at all because they are permanently dead.

“Adam?” Elissa called looking around the room with two bodies covered up on some tables.

“In here.” I heard him say from another room off the one we were standing in. We walked in there to where he was tagging some belongings.

“Elissa and Elissa and Elissa’s friend? I am seeing double.” Adam said looking shocked.

“You are a vampire?” I asked looking at him then at my sister. She was going to hook me up with another vampire.

“Adam this is my twin sister, Amanda.” Elissa said introducing us as he shook my hand.

“Is there a problem with me being a vampire?” Adam asked.

“Uh, no. You do realize I am a vampire slayer, right?” I replied.

“That is even better. Elissa never told me she had a sister.” Adam said grinning.

“Ahem.” Erelin said.

“Oh and this is our friend Erelin.” Elissa said as I shook my head. This was unbelievable. How did I not see this coming?

“You are a slayer too?” Adam said confused.

“No. I am next in line.” Erelin said as she shook Adam’s hand.

“Well any friend of Elissa’s is a friend of mine. I am sure she already told you but I supply her and Pete their blood.” Adam said.

“We know.” Erelin said looking queasy.

I studied Adam. He was cute for a good vampire. This was definitely not a good first impression but this is my first meeting with him.

“Speaking of, you should be set for the week.” Adam replied.

“I know but see I got into an accident and I need to repay Pete for what I had to drink the other night. We finally know each other after I saved his butt then he saved mine, you get the idea.” She said smiling.

“Ok. Let me finish tagging these items for some of the corpse’s family members here and I will go get them.” Adam replied.

Elissa grabbed Erelin and they left the room leaving me there with Adam. This was just great. I am in a room with a cute guy, and corpses in the other. Did I mention I hate hospitals?

“So how long have you known Pete?” I asked.

“Well, we were sort of turned together. An old friend lured us to a party and we both had no idea that we were going to become vampires that night. I should not say any more. I let the past go. I eventually got a job here and I love it. You should talk to Pete if you want to know anymore.” Adam replied.

“Elissa and he hooked up. I met him last night. Do you think he is ok for my sister? I need to know these things.” I replied.

“Over protective sister, much?” He laughed.

“Is that a bad thing?” I asked.

“No, not at all. Actually I think it is kind of sexy.” He replied catching me off guard.

“You would.” I said rolling my eyes.

“Look, I realize this is kind of awkward for you and I can see what your sister is trying to do.” Adam said.

“And what is it you think she is trying to do?” I asked dying to know what he had to say.

“She is trying to do what she thinks is best for you as you want what is best for her.” He said.

“And that would be?” I asked.

“She wants you to probably date me.” He said guessing it right.

“What if I decline?” I ask.

“Am I really that bad?” He said grinning. Ok I had to admit he was easy on the eyes and had a great smile. I remained silent however.

“I am off tomorrow night. How about I take you somewhere like on a date? You can get to know me better. I really am not that bad of a guy.” He said flashing me his grin again.

“Ok, one date. Here is my number.” I said writing it down for him on a notepad I saw.

“You won’t regret it.” He said.

“Let’s hope not.” I said under my breath as he led me out to where Elissa and Erelin were waiting.

“Now, about those blood packets you need, follow me.” He said.
