Dead in the Water

Stop And Stare

(Amanda’s POV)
“Careful.” He said as my knees started to wobble and I almost lost my balance. Martin grabbed me gently and helped me to sit down on the couch.

“It’s you.” I said finally recognizing him as I looked into his eyes. I could not look away. I knew those eyes. I knew his voice.

“You’re the one who saved me in the hospital two months ago. You are the one who followed me and helped me that night in the parking lot. You were in my dreams willing me to live. You, Martin are also the boy I fell in love with when we were only seventeen and in the hospital together years ago.” I said.

Martin gave me his smile that had my heart beating faster and faster. “I don’t understand. How are you like this? Why did you not show yourself to me? Why did you leave me years ago and never leave me your number? Why couldn’t I remember your name or place you at first?” I said firing off all the many questions that roamed in my head.

“Amanda, calm down.” He said laughing. “I will answer all of your questions.” He said laughing.

My phone started to buzz on his coffee table. “It has been going off all night but I was afraid to answer it because you were still unconscious. I think it may be one of your friends.” Martin replied.

“What time is it?” I asked.

“You have been out all night. It is a little after nine a.m.” He replied.

“Crap!” I said picking up my phone and seeing that it was Pete.

“Pete?” I asked.

“Thank goodness you are alive. I thought after last night you were…” He said before I cut him off.

“Listen, Pete, I am fine but I can’t really talk right now. I do not want to talk about last night right away either but I am ok. Tell the gang.” I said hanging up.

“That was quick.” Martin said as I sat my phone back down on the table.

“Wait for it.” I said. About a few seconds later, my phone vibrated again. It was Pete.

“He’s just worried but now that I answered he will hang up here in a second.” I said. “See.” I added as he did and did not call back.

“Is that your boyfriend?” Martin asked.

“No. He was my sister’s boyfriend, emphasis on past tense. It is a long story and one I don’t want to get into right now.” I said looking away from Martin. As much as my heart was pounding being near Martin, it was also breaking from being deceived by someone who told me that they loved me and someone I thought I could love.

“Hey, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you.” He said grabbing my hand.

“You know what. No worries.” I said spontaneously kissing Martin as I had wanted to for so long. I never forgot about him. Martin was my first love and even when I was with Micah and thought I loved him, Martin was always in the back of my mind.

“Not that I’m complaining but what was that for?” He asked.

“Lost time.” I said smiling as he smiled and returned my kiss sending shivers down my spine. His kiss was powerful and thank goodness, I was sitting down.

“I thought that you had a boyfriend. I mean I saw you with a guy and I backed off.” Martin said as he broke away.

“I knew he would scare you away that day in the hospital. As of today, Sisky and I are no longer together. I just wish you would have stayed and showed yourself to me that day I died and came back. I know you saved me. My heart needed saving too.” I said as he pulled me close and I started to cry as I laid my head on his chest.

“I’m here now and I tell you, I am not going anywhere. Besides I have to answer all your questions that you demanded.” He said making me smile a bit as I rose up for him to wipe away my tears.

“I never stopped thinking about you.” I said.

“I never stopped thinking about you either.” He replied with his lips touching mine.
