Love Song

Chapter 28: Am I Good Enough For You To Love Me Too?

Amy

“Amy, you can’t stick by Jordan forever,” Sean said on our way home, “you have a life too. What about college? We have to head back to San Francisco.”

“Sean, maybe it’s a girl thing, maybe it’s a friend, maybe it’s a human thing, but maybe I should transfer to a university here instead,” I said thoughtfully, tapping my finger on the steering wheel.

“Amy!” Sean exclaimed, “I love Jordan and everything but you can’t let her ruin your future. Stanford isn’t a university you transfer out of. You worked so hard to get accepted.”

“I just think that moving eight hours away from my friends and family was a mistake,” I mumbled, “Their more important to me than some fancy university.”

“What about your plans of being a heart surgeon?” Sean asked, “You’re just going to give that up?”

“Maybe that’s not what I was meant to do,” I pulled up in front of my mom’s apartment complex and pulled the key from the ignition, “I mean, you know about Jordan’s music right?”

Sean burst into laughter, “Amy! You really think some band is going to support you? Especially considering they’ve been hiatus because Zakk left and now because Jordan has her own crap to deal with.”

“I still have money from the work I did do with them,” I retorted, “did you think I wasted it or something? That I don’t have money to support myself?”

“I’m just saying,” Sean took off his seatbelt and leaned towards the door handle, “maybe it’s time to think a little more realistically?”

“Sean, I’ve realized that what I could do with my life involves my cello, not cutting open someone’s chest,” I said, “even if Jordan and the band never come out of their hiatus, I could still do this on my own.”

Sean sighed, “I personally don’t agree with this decision. But you seem so sure of yourself, so I’ll support this.”

“Thank you,” I smiled as I opened my car door, “besides, it seemed like we made a lot of money doing this. They’ll figure things out eventually, don’t you think?”

Sean looked around, and I could tell he was trying to find the right words to say, not that I would’ve been offended if he’d said “the wrong thing” but I still thought it was cute that he was putting in the effort of humoring me.

“Hey, I need to ask you something,” he said, changing the subject, “but not right now. How about we go out tonight and we’ll talk?”

“Sure, that’d be fun!” I said. He grabbed my hand and pulled me to him, lightly kissing my lips. I walked towards the front gate of my apartment complex as slowly as I could, waiting until Sean was out of my sight. I smiled and headed up the stairs, my mind a big blur as I looked for my house key. Sean always had that affect on me, I loved it.

I examined myself in my full length mirror, fluffing the skirt of my white dress with black polka dots. I smiled as I grabbed the heart shaped necklace Sean had gotten for me a few months ago and fondled the floor with my feet, searching for my shoes. I finally found them and put them on. After I was done getting ready, I wondered if it was a good idea to straighten my hair. I brushed my hair with my fingers, pursing my lips in irritation. There was a light knock on the front door and I attempted to run in my heels, which I’ve proven to be difficult.

I swung open the door and found Sean standing there with a white polo shirt and khaki slacks, which on anyone else, I wouldn’t really like. But it fit him so well. There was the faint scent of cologne coming from him, and not that stupid Axe crap, the real good stuff that is actually a pleasant smell.

“You look amazing,” he said softly, leaning over to kiss me.

“You don’t look to bad yourself,” I replied. He grabbed my hand and he swung my arm back and forth as we walked towards his car, my head on his shoulder, “so what was it you wanted to talk about?”

“I don’t want to tell you until we get there,” he said. I continued to pester him while we drove. Are we there yet? What do you want to tell me? Come on tell me! Please? Pretty please? With sugar on top? None of it worked. He still refused to tell me where we were going and what he was going to talk to me about. Just when I was ready to get frustrated, he finally pulled into a parking spot in front of a fancy restaurant that would take me months to afford.

“Dude!” I shouted, “how in the hell will you be able to afford a place like this?!”

“I’ve been saving for awhile now,” he said softly. We got out of the car and he led me inside.

“Reservation under Morgan for two?” Sean said. The woman flipped through the book in front of her and looked back up at us as she smiled, grabbing two menus from underneath the podium she stood in front of.

“Right this way,” she said, tucking the menus under her arm. She led us through the maze of tables until she stopped a small booth in the corner, away from everyone else. I slipped into the booth and Sean sat across from me. The woman placed our menus in front of us and smiled as she nodded and walked away.

I opened my menu and skimmed through it, as if this would be the biggest decision of my life. When I looked up, Sean was staring at me with a small smile on his face. I looked around and chuckled, “what are you smiling about?”

“Nothing, you’re just cute, that’s all,” he grabbed both of my hands and held them in his, “now…I need to tell you something…something important…”
