Chapter 42

Shannon’s P.O.V:

‘Shannon!’ they cried, launching themselves at me.
They both hugged me, each chattering in one ear. I pulled away a little, chuckling.
‘I can see you guys haven’t changed one bit...God I’ve missed you so much’ I said looking from one to the other.
Kylie stood on my left.
She was around my height with mocha coloured skin, long curly brown hair, and a pair of glasses with bright red frames perched on her button nose.
Holly was almost six feet tall – she tended to tower over Kylie and I, especially in heels – and was model thin, her shiny black hair cut into a sleek bob. She had gorgeous almond-shaped brown eyes and the kind of skin that tanned after about two seconds in the sun.

Seeing them made me realise just how much I’d missed them...they were my best friends, part of my family.
I hugged them again, squeezing them tightly – a slight lump forming in my throat.
I pulled away, all of us babbling practically unintelligibly, not one of us listening to what the others were saying.
I stepped back, closer to Nick, who was watching us with a bewildered look on his face. I grinned at him quickly and was about to introduce everyone, when Kylie and Holly looked at each other slyly.
I shut my mouth and eyed them suspiciously. I’d known them almost my entire life; I knew they were up to something.

What they were up to became apparent about five seconds later and I couldn’t help but roll my eyes – I really should have seen it coming.
‘Dia duit Nick’ they chorused, giggling slightly.
Nick’s eyes widened, and he threw me a helpless look.
‘Conas atá tú Shannon?’ Kylie turned to me, smirking.
‘Guys’ I sighed, giving them a disapproving look.
Holly glared at me, ‘súgartha feadh na Shannon, beidh sé greannmhar’
I sighed again, pinching the bridge of my nose between my thumb and forefinger.
‘Maitheas’ I said resignedly – I knew they wouldn’t give up, so I figured it was better to get it over with.
Nick threw me a wide-eyed look when I spoke.
‘Conas atá tú?’ Kylie asked again.
‘Táim ar mhuin na muice, agus tú féin?’
They both shrugged, ‘muid go maith, tá a lán againn gur chaill tú cé’ Holly answered, a little bit of sadness creeping into her voice.
‘Yeah, tá sé imithe is faide againn riamh gan tú a fheiceáil’ Kylie chimed in.
I glanced at Nick, whose eyes were going back and forth between the three of us like he was watching a particularly riveting tennis match.

I turned back to the girls – so far I wasn’t seeing the funny side to this, it was just upsetting me.
‘Mé gur chaill sibh, tá sé deacair gan a bhreith in ann do dhuine ar bith a fheiceáil...Conor go háirithe. Ní raibh sé in ann teacht suas le haghaidh na Nollaig’
They both nodded their heads in sympathy, and when I glanced at Nick again he was frowning slightly at me – I guessed he’d picked up on Conor’s name.
Both Kylie and Holly looked at Nick again, almost avaricious smiles on their faces as their eyes drank him in, in one long smooth look, starting at his feet and gliding up, coming to a stop at his dark brown hair.
I had to stop myself from stepping in front of him so they couldn’t look at him anymore.
Of course, then I had to tell myself to stop being so stupid and acting so crazy – Holly and Kylie were my best friends.
I would bet anything that they were trying to change the subject – steer the conversation away from Conor – and Nick was the easiest thing to change it to.
‘Tá sé an-te, Shannon’
I laughed happily, ‘muinín dom, a fhios agam...tá sé níos teo fiú gan léine’
They flicked appreciative glances his way, making him frown again at the sudden attention from the three of us.
He was way outnumbered and he knew it.
We giggled when he threw us weird looks and shifted restlessly.

I had to admit, it was nice to have girlfriends to discuss these things with – I loved being friends with Nick, Mark and Jay, but it wasn’t the same.
I smiled inwardly, what made the conversation even sweeter was the fact that Nick was standing right beside us and he had no idea what was going on. He knew we were talking about him of course, he just didn’t have a clue what we were saying – yes I am evil.
I snapped back to attention when Holly spoke again, ‘ionas go mbeidh cé chomh fada leat dhá aga dul amach?’ she asked, still staring at Nick, who was beginning to look very uncomfortable.
I rolled my eyes and sighed dramatically, ‘oró mo Dhia! Cén fáth a ndéanann gach duine a cheapann go bhfuil? Ní bhíonn muid ag dul amach’
I sighed internally, what I’d said was true but that didn’t mean I wanted it to be true.
‘D’fhéach sibh cuma mhaith leat cúpla, lanúin an-gleoite’ Holly laughed, while Kylie looked at me knowingly; ‘is mian leat é nach bhfuil?’
I looked at the ground – I could feel myself blushing. I shrugged one shoulder half-heartedly, but I shouldn’t have bothered, they just laughed.
They knew me too well.
I looked up, ‘tá rud ar bith eile mian leat a fháil, nó is féidir linn ar ais go dtí an mBéarla?’
They glanced at one another before Kylie answered, ‘níl, muid go maith, dul chun cinn’
She flashed her teeth in a grin and I rolled my eyes again.

I swear, if I didn’t know any better I’d say they were telepathic or something.
I turned to Nick, ‘sorry about that, this is Kylie and Holly; my very annoying best friends’
I glared at the annoying best friends in question but they just shrugged before turning bright smiles on Nick.
‘Nick it’s so nice to finally meet you’ Holly spoke.
‘Yeah, we’ve heard so much about you’ Kylie chimed in.
They looked at each other again, grinned and said in unison, ‘Shannon doesn’t do you justice’
I almost retched then and there – Nick of course loved it, he was in his element.
‘Nice to meet you too ladies – unfortunately Shannon didn’t tell me nearly enough about either of you, no matter how much I asked’
All three of them glared at me and I threw my hands up in exasperation.

Muttering something about being thirsty, I stomped off to the kiosk, but not before I heard him say smoothly, ‘I can see you’ve had a good influence on her’
Their simpering giggles at his words followed me as I walked the couple of metres to the small kiosk, that had everything from magazines to sweets (and everything in between).
I muttered angrily to myself about flirty boys and gullible girls as I paid for my Coke – earning me a strange look from the man behind the counter.
Sighing, I thanked him and trudged slowly back over to the three of them.
They were standing huddled together, laughing loudly at something. I glowered at Nick’s back – maybe I was being irrational but I couldn’t help feeling annoyed.
When I reached them, I stood silently between Holly and Kylie. Not one of them so much as glanced at me as they continued to talk, so I let my thoughts wander.

Someone snapping their fingers right in front of my face made me jump as I came back to reality.
‘What?’ I asked shortly.
Nick just stood and stared at me.
‘Where have Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee gone?’ I asked, looking around, finally noticing the absence of my two best friends.
‘They saw someone they knew, they’ll be back’ he answered quietly.
‘Oh’
I began to fidget under his scrutiny.
Eventually he sighed and grabbed my hand, tugging me back over to the steps we’d been sitting on when Holly and Kylie had appeared.

He sat down, pulling me with him so I was sitting on his lap. I exhaled quietly, unable to stop myself from snuggling against him.
‘What’s wrong Sweetheart?’
‘Nothing’
I stared at the still water in front of us.
‘Come on’ he jiggled me slightly when my attention began to wander.
I sighed and began to play with the bracelet that he’d put on my wrist last night – wow, had it only been last night?
I mentally shook myself, getting back to the conservation at hand.
‘You know the way I’ve mentioned how...charming you are before?’ I asked hesitantly.
He nodded as he watched me with a guarded expression.
I looked back to the water, ‘It’s just...do you have to...I mean they’re my best friends’
I grimaced and turned my head so I could look at him, ‘that came out wrong, what I mean is that this is the first time I’ve seen them in months and...’ I trailed off and began picking anxiously at the corner of his jacket.
‘And I’m taking all the attention’ he finished.
I opened my mouth to object, but he cut me off, ‘don’t, we both know it’s true. I’m sorry, I wasn’t doing it intentionally’
‘I know’ I kissed his cheek softly, ‘it’s not your fault that girls are drawn to you like a moth to a flame’
He chuckled, ‘should I take that as a compliment, or should I act offended?’
He gave me his best outraged look, and I laughed weakly. It didn’t last long.
I sighed, ‘I don’t know’ I told him seriously, ‘I just don’t know’
‘Well if it helps, the flame never asked for the moths to be attracted to it’ he said wryly and I rolled my eyes.

He wrapped his arms tighter around me before he leaned in and kissed me.
I shifted in his embrace so I could put my arms around his neck.
My heart started to beat faster, and just as the kiss deepened, and his warm hands pressed me closer against his chest, someone cleared their throat – loudly.
I looked up at my friends, and I could tell my face was flushed.
‘Umm...Hi’ I grinned sheepishly at them but they both just stared, eyebrows raised, while Nick laid his face against my shoulder to hide his silent laughter.
I pinched him discreetly and smiled sweetly when he raised his head to glare at me. Kylie and Holly stared for another moment, their shrewd gazes taking everything in before they seemed to shrug it off.
‘Sorry to interrupt’ Kylie grinned, ‘but we have to go’
I frowned, ‘so soon? We barely got to talk’
Holly shrugged, ‘don’t worry chica; we’ll see you on New Year’s won’t we? You’re coming to mine aren’t you?’
I glanced at Nick, who nodded encouragingly at me.
‘I suppose so’ I confirmed.
‘Good’ they chorused, before they both stepped forward and gave me a kiss on the cheek.
‘Bye babe. It was nice to meet you Nick’ they called as they began to walk away.
With one last wave they were gone.
