We've Got a Big Mess On Our Hands

GABE’S POV

It was great seeing Genevieve again, but I couldn’t help but notice the beautiful woman standing next to William.

“Gabe, this is Amelie, Genevieve’s mother.” he said. “Amelie, this is my Gabey.”

“It’s so nice to meet you.” Amelie said. “They never stop talking about you, William and Genevieve.”

“It’s nice to meet you, too.” I said, faking a smile.

I couldn’t help but feel ridiculously jealous knowing that this beautiful woman is a major part of my boyfriend’s life. She’s gorgeous, there’s no denying it, and I know it’s ridiculous, because William’s gay, but she’s the mother of his child. They’ll have a bond that I’ll never have with William, no matter what.

“Gabey, we just had ICE CREAM!” Genny said.

“That’s so amazing!” I said. “I wish I had ice cream!”

“I knew you would.” William said from over near the door. “I bought a tub for us, see?”

“Aww, Willy.” I said. “Thanks.”

William came over and stood next to me, leaning down to give me a short kiss.

“Hey, Genny, can you go see mommy for a bit?” William asked.

She nodded sweetly and ran over to sit on her mother’s lap.

Once Genny had moved over to Amelie, I pulled William down to my lap and wrapped my arms around him. Maybe I was acting a bit jealous, but I didn’t care; Willy is mine.

“Jealous?” William whispered into my ear. “Don’t be. There is absolutely nothing between us. I like men, exclusively.”

“I know, I just can’t help it. She’s so gorgeous.” I sighed, looking over at Genny playing with her mother.

“Hey.” William said. “Look at me.” I looked up to meet his gorgeous eyes. “She could never even compare to you. She’s not attractive to me in any way other than as a good friend.”

I smiled and pecked William’s cheek. “I guess I’m just really insecure.”

“You, insecure?” William said. “Never.”

He cuddled into my chest and I rubbed up and down his arms.

“Daddy?” Genevieve asked.

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“How much longer are you and Gabey going to be away for?”

“We’re coming back in about a week.” I said. “We’ll be back home before you know it.”

“Okay.” Genevieve said. “Can we watch a movie?”

We turned on Finding Nemo and watched that until Genevieve was asleep on Amelie’s lap.

“I think we’d better get going.” she said, nudging Genevieve slightly. “Honey, we need to be going home.”

“Okay.” Genevieve said sleepily, rubbing her eyes tiredly. I had to aww inwardly at that. She’s just so adorable and I can’t believe how lucky all of us are to have her in our lives.

William walked over and picked Genevieve up, carrying her across the bus and down the steps.

“Gabe?” Amelie said. “Can I talk to you for a second?”

“Yeah, sure.” I said. I wanted to say no, but I was trying to be less jealous.

She led me over to the kitchen area, away from where William and Genevieve could hear us.

“Look, I could tell it was a bit uncomfortable having me here, but I just wanted to reassure you that William and I haven’t had feelings for each other beyond friendship for a long time now. We’re friends and we stay connected for Genevieve’s sake. You guys have something beautiful and I can tell he loves you with all his heart. Well, the part that isn’t already dedicated to Genevieve, that is.”

“Thank you.” I said. “I’m sorry for being an ass all night long. I just… you’re beautiful, and I don’t want to lose William to anyone. You guys have this bond that William and I will never have.”

“You may never have a child together, biologically, but our bond is completely different, and much less strong, than yours. You and William are so in love, something William and I will never have. Our bond goes no further than friendship and wanting what’s best for Genevieve.”

“You’re a great girl, Amelie.” I said. “I can see why William and you are such good friends. I hope tonight didn’t ruin my chances at a friendship with you as well.”

“Not at all.” Amelie laughed. “Just make sure to invite me to the wedding, eh?”

“You’ll be there, I promise.” I said, hugging her tightly.

“I’ll see you around.” Amelie said. “I have a feeling you’ll be around for a while.”

“I sure hope so.” I said, waving goodbye. I walked over and grabbed Genevieve from William’s arms.

“Gabey!” Genevieve said.

“You didn’t think I’d let you leave without saying goodbye, did you?” I said, tickling her around her stomach.

“I love you, Gabey.” Genevieve said, hugging me around my neck and tucking her head into my shoulder.

My eyes started to water a bit and I looked over at William, only to find his eyes a little misty as well.

“Be good for your mommy, okay?” I said. “We’ll be home soon.”

“I will!” she said, letting go of my neck and reaching out for her mother.

I watched as they both left and smiled, knowing that our dysfunctional family was actually better than many normal ones.

William walked over and wrapped his arms around my waist.

“I like her.” I said. “She’s a great girl.”

“She is.” William said. “I couldn’t have found a better or more understanding mother.”

And I didn’t feel jealous at all when he said that. Maybe I’m growing or something, but I understood that their relationship was no closer than ours and that I would always be his number one, romantically.

He would always be mine as well…
