Pull the Plug

I laughed.

"My mom is not dead," I said firmly.

"Yes she is," Gerard countered.

I shook my head, positive that my mom was alive. I had seen her yesterday after all.

Gerard put his arms firmly on my shoulder.

"Violet. She's dead."

I pulled away from him.

"Why are you lying to me?" I asked.

"I'm not lying to you, Violet."

"Yes you are!" I started to shout.

I could feel my breathing fluctuate, speeding up in short bursts. Gerard's arms were on my shoulders again, but this time he held me tighter.

"I promise I'm not lying."

I squirmed in his grasp.

Everything seemed out of proportion. His words were too soft; they couldn't be true. His grip was too tight; it felt like he was trying to hurt me.

I struggled against him.

"Let me go!" I shouted as I hit my palms against his chest.

But he didn't let me go.

"It's okay," Gerard said as he pulled me closer to him.

I panicked and my irregular breathing became choked with sobs.

His arms encased me. Trapped me.

I couldn't take it anymore, so I kicked him in the shin. Hard.

Gerard's arms dropped and he gasped in pain.
