She Was Fading

Alice.

My mother’s name is Alice. Well, really it’s Alicia but she hates it. And she hates when I call her “Mom” because she was only fifteen when she had me and it wasn’t hip to have a kid. For the first seven years of my life I thought she was my sister.

She likes to visit me after she’s broken up with Sebastian. Again. Sebastian is my biological father but it’s a pretty mute fact. I’ve only seen him twice in my entire life.

Alice found my apartment and knocked on the door with tears in her eyes and bags at her feet. “He’s gone.” She sobbed and wrapped her arms around me. I let her in and got her settled. Two days later Delilah came by for our Saturday visits. It was a surprise for both of them.

Alice took one look at Delilah and rolled her eyes because she thought she knew what was going on. Like she knew me.
