The Road Trip
Chapter 3
I was on a soccer field. The field was lush and a deep green, the sign of healthy, well-cared for grass. I wanted to play soccer and beat the other team, but there wasn’t another team. I was alone on the pitch. I thought about leaving the field and was about to start walking when I heard someone shout my name.
“Denny! Denny, over here! Dennnny!!” someone yelled. I turned towards the direction of their voice and saw him. It was Eric, and he had a soccer ball at his foot. It was a golden soccer ball, one I’ve only dreamed of ever actually playing with.
“If you want the ball, you’ll have to come get it!” He said, smirking and smug-like.
“All right! But don’t start crying like a little girl when I whip your bootie!” I yelled back to him across the field. I began to jog toward him, and while jogging noticed all of these distinctive features about him. His eyes especially stood out. For some reason, at the moment it looked as though they were shining with excitement, happiness, anticipation, and…something else… I couldn’t recognize what the other thing was, nor at that moment did I care. I was free as a fish in the sea while jogging toward him, planning to take my desired golden ball, and keep it as a trophy. Eric was still smirking, seeming extremely confident in his abilities. I got there within a few seconds of that thought and began to jockey his movements, keeping him in front and at bay.
“Let’s see what you’ve got, Colton! Bring it on!” I said, mockingly, as we continued our little soccer dance, going back and forth.
“Fine, but you asked for it!” He replied calmly, and with a new burst of energy, did a move around me, Matthew’s to be exact, and began sprinting toward the goal, ball at his feet going fast. He isn’t going to beat me, he isn’t going to beat me, I chanted over and over in my head. I was sprinting faster than I ever had now, towards him to try to keep him from scoring. I was almost there and my only choice was to tackle him. So I bent my knees and leaped. Come on, come on… I willed myself while in the air, hurtling towards him.
“Oooomf!” He let out, as I made contact and we both fell to the ground, my somehow underneath him with him on top facing me.
“This goes against the laws of science, we shouldn’t have ended up in this position.” I said quizzically.
“Eh, it was probably from the rolling, nice hit by the way, even though it’s a foul. You cheater.”
“A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.” I replied coolly, while staring up into his big, beautiful blue-green eyes. He quirked his eyebrow.
“Oh really? What’s a girl gotta do now?” He said, staring back down at me. He seemed closer than he was a second before he said that. I could feel his warm breath on my lips and I shivered. Minty… I thought. I was still looking up at him as he seemed to lean in closer… as did I. Closer. Closer. Even closer, until our noses touched, but not our lips.
“You didn’t answer my question. What’s a girl gotta do now?” He repeated softly.
“This…” I told him simply. I was about to close the microscopic bit of space left when…
BEEP,BEEP,BEEP, BEEEEEEEP!!!
I rolled over in surprise that it was a dream, which quickly turned to annoyance at the still beeping alarm clock.
“DIE, you idiotic, man-made, new-fangled, technological thing-a-ma-jiggie!!!!” I yelled at it while hitting it with a my fist. It still wouldn’t stop!
“ACH!!! GRRRR!!!” I yelled in frustration. I was about to throw it against the wall when out Levi came from the bathroom, her red and blonde hair still wet from her shower. She rushed over to me to keep me from causing irreparable damage to the stupid, so-called 21st century ‘convenience’.
“WAIT, wait! Remember the incident with the toaster! We don’t want another fiasco like that again. I’ll take the alarm clock from here and make sure justice is served.” Levi said, finally taking it out of my grip and flipping the switch on the top to turn off the alarm.
“There! It won’t be waking anyone up in a noisy fashion anymore!” She said.
“EAT THAT, ALARM CLOCK! You’re lucky you didn’t end up like that toaster that kept burning my toast no matter what setting it was on! That toaster got what it deserved… it’s just dessert… mwah ha ha ha ha ha ha haaaaaaaa!!” I said maniacally, remembering what enjoyment I took from taking it apart and stepping on EVERY piece. (So I’m a little sadistic, what can I say? It was fun though… hee hee heeee)
“Everything’s alright now, Denny. No need to dwell on that stupid little machine any longer.”
“You’re right!”
“Of course I am, now go get ready we need to check out soon. I want to get back n the road again and make it to our Florida destination by 3.” Lev said briskly. Leave it to Levi to already have a schedule for today…I thought to myself getting some clothes out of my bag an walking to the bathroom to prepare for and begin a new day of travel.

After getting past the concierge at the front desk (he was sooo flirty and kept winking at us. Honestly, though he did it so much it looked like he was twitching. Haha men.), we got into my car, Levi driving once again. Levi began singing to the blaring radio once we got on the interstate, so I took it as a good time to reflect back on my nice, yet confusing dream. Why was Eric in it?, I wondered, and why did we almost kiss? I mean, I don’t even like him, he’s just a random, nice guy off the street! My subconscious mind must be going a little loopy. NO BOYS, NO BOYS!!!I kept repeating that until Lev realized how hard I was staring at nothing in concentration.
“Uh… Denny? Are you okay?”
“Yeah, just fine, I was…thinking.” I reassured her.
“If you say so… but you can talk to me about anything, you know that right?”
“Yeah, I know.”
“Good. Hmmm I’m hungry. Want to find something to eat?”
“Sure! Good idea! I’m hungry too!” I exclaimed, glad to be changing the topic.
“Where should we eat? Wait I know…”
“CHILI’S!!!!” We both yelled. Then we started keeping an eye out for an exit with a Chili’s sign on it.

For those of you who aren’t soccer playing beasts like me, a Matthew’s is a move where you take one of your feet, push the ball to the inside, then push it back out around the player. All in one movement, without putting your foot down. Yeah, I know, you’re all astonished by the awesome skittles it takes to do that move, it’s okay, I am too.
