The Road Trip
Chapter 7
Free at last, free at last, oh lord, free at last!!!,I thought, overjoyed. I was finally being allowed out of the hospital, 4 days after I woke up. After the whole sing-a-long event, I became super friendly with the hospital staff. Apparently most of them were ‘The Lion King’ lovers too! Except for a spare few who said ‘A Bug’s Life’ was better (It’s funny, but seriously? Nothing can compare to the classic ‘Lion King’!), which was the source of many of our arguments throughout the 2 days of sitting and “recovering” in the hospital. I mean sure the whole, “It’s our lot in life, it’s not a lot, but it’s our life.” Thing is meaningful and all, and the movie’s pretty funny, it does not compare to the awesomeness and squeedilicious-ness of ‘The Lion King’.
“I can breathe air!!! I’m no longer in that small hospital room!! I thought I was going to become claustrophobic if I stayed in there one more minute!” I exclaimed as soon as Levi, Eric, and I walked through the rotating, glass doors of the hospital. Both of them looked at me and smiled broadly.
“You’re so dramatic, Denny! But I love ya anyways!” Levi said to me, after watching me begin to kiss the ground…literally. Eric rolled his eyes once he saw me begin to do that.
“Wow, Denny! You’re gonna get si-ick, haa ha ha haaa haaaa! Then you’ll haveta come baaa-ack!” He said sing-songy, and stuck his tongue out at me. I returned by sticking my tongue out and blowing a raspberry in his direction. He then blew a raspberry back at me, which I caused me to do it again (I was NOT losing to him!), and for him to repeat as well until it finally turned into a contest into who could hold a raspberry out longer. We stopped eventually, when we both were beginning to be tinged with blue from lack of oxygen (Oxygen’s for SQUARES, haha.) Although we didn’t stop on our own, Levi literally had to walk between us, count to three, and grab both our tongues at the same time in order to stop us without either winning.
“HEY!” Eric and I cried out, partially garbled, since Levi was still holding our tongues. She then pulled her hands away from our tongues, looking disgusted at her hands, but satisfied at the two of us.
“What? You two were asking for it, with your odd form of flirting.” She said, innocently shrugging, while I blushed lightly and looked at the ground, not looking at Eric to see if he was too.
“Aww look at you two, blushing like two little kids, so cute and naïve!” She told us while clapping her hands together happily. I glanced over at Eric, who looked towards me at the same time, both of us seeing each other’s blushes. Levi was still looking back and forth between us, until she stopped, seemed to ponder something for around two seconds.
“Well, I’m gonna go around and get the car. Hey Eric, you want to go get something to eat with us, knowing Twix here, she hasn’t eaten in around 4 hours, so she’s probably “starving”.” Levi said with that sly look on her face, using finger quotations around the word ‘starving’. I don’t know what she’s talking about! I’m not hungry at all! Plus, I never say I’m starving!I thought indignantly, until I actually pictured food, and my stomach growled. Then, I thought back to all the times I had been hungry and said I was starving. My head began to hurt from all the memories that popped up. Darn Levi, she knows me too well…
“Sure, I’d love to join you pretty, young ladies!” Eric said looking at me the whole time, causing me to giggle and blush.
“Well, then I be right back with your car Denny! Don’t do anything you’ll regret while I’m gone!” Levi said cheerfully, while turning to walk, no actually skip while humming ‘Here Comes the Bride’ (again) loudly. Eric and I were alone standing on the sidewalk next to the hospital. I coughed a little, and remembered back to when I first woke up in the hospital and found out Eric was my savior, and a question popped into my head that I had been meaning to ask.
“Soo Eric, what brought you to the neighborhood anyways?” I asked him casually, yet forcefully. My eyes were most likely blazing with curiosity, even though I was trying to keep my face neutral. Eric looked a little nervous, but he looked like that before I had asked my question. There was a period of silence between us before he answered.
“Well, I was actually heading to Florida for the summer. You know the sun and the beaches, tans, games…” He trailed off on his list of appealing things of Florida when he noticed the surprised look on my face.
“Really? Weird coinky dink, that’s where Levi and I were heading, where in Florida were you going?” I asked him sincerely.
“Orlando, duh! I mean seriously what’s better than…” Eric replied when I joined in with him.
“Disney world!” We both said together. We looked at each other, and then we both burst out laughing and started to roll on the ground for absolutely no reason at all. WOOOW! So weird that we were both going to the same place and thought the same way about it. We have so much in common!
“ROFL!!” We both yelled out at the same time we were actually doing it—‘ROFL’ means ‘Rolling on floor laughing!—which just made us laugh even more!
Eric and I were still rolling on the coarse concrete, laughing, when Levi rolled up in my Expedition. She took one look at us and started on her own little giggle fest in the driver’s seat. Greeeaatt, now we’re all laughing, who’s supposed to knock sense into us now?
“What are yawl’s problems?” Levi asked us, after calming herself down first. I was positive my face was completely red from all my laughing, I had tried to stop, but every time I looked at Eric, I started laughing again!
“I dunno.” I told her while Eric said, “I have no idea!”
“You weirdoes! Well, at least now you two lovebirds have your own inside joke.” Levi told us. That shut us up abruptly, causing us to blush even further. Our already red faces from laughing, were now scarlet from adding the blushing to it. Now that I calmed down, I asked Eric my other question.
“Why were you at that Chili’s where I almost got ran over? I’m thankful you were there to save my life, but why…how?” I asked him softly, hoping with my eyes for him to answer honestly.
“I have no idea, honestly… I mean, I don’t usually go to Chili’s. I just, I don’t know, and I know this sounds hokey, but hear me out, okay? I sort of felt a pull there, like I had to be there for some reason…” He replied quietly, but not so much so I had to strain my ears in order to hear him. He wasn’t looking at through his whole explanation, and when he finished he finally looked at me. His aquamarine eyes looked like they were telling truth. After a pause, he spoke again.
“All I know is that I’m glad I was there no matter why it happened.” Eric said purposefully. We then just stared at each other for awhile. While looking in his eyes, it was almost like there was no one else in the world, just him and me. It would have seemed like there wasn’t anyone else if it wasn’t for Levi, who turned it to almost by clearing her throat.
“So, are we going to get food or what?” Levi asked us both. Eric and I looked at each other again, he shrugged.
“Alright.” I told Levi. Then, Eric and I made our way into my car. Eric sat in the back, and I sat shotgun (hey it’s my car, even if he’s the guest!). We all buckled in, and started to drive.
Five minutes after we were on the road, Levi and I heard a sigh of happiness come from the back seat. I turned around, puzzled.
“This is an awesome car!” Eric said excitedly in response to my expression.
“Thanks! I love my baby!” I told him, which started us off on a long conversation on our favorite types of cars.
