Finally she broke.

The news was simply too much too bear; the boy she was in love with was leaving her to enter back into a broken society and make his way, leaving her behind to pull the dead weight and keep failing. She couldn’t think of any more scapegoats; all that rose up in her throat were coarse screams that wouldn’t make it past her tongue.

She swallowed the news. And so they agreed to meet one hour from then in the cathedral, Jack with his crown and Jill with her cigarettes. He ran a hand through her fiery hair like he had the holy water long ago and she closed her eyes, vowing to remember the touch forever.
