Cosmic Love

Elena Gilbert

I decided to go home while Stefan stayed and worried about collateral damage. He wanted to make sure nothing came out of this. Damon went off and did…whatever Damon does. No one ever knows, and I’m not sure they want to.

Stefan came home awhile later. Elena had stopped by soon after that. And as Stefan came into the house after saying goodbye I grinned. “What?” asked Stefan.

“Told you so,” I sang before returning to my bedroom for the night. When I woke up the next morning I realized Damon hadn’t come home during the night.

Stefan had left for school earlier so I was home alone. Now was my chance. Going into Damon’s room I began to look through his drawers and everywhere I could think of. I was sure I covered every inch of space when I finally stopped. Standing in the middle of the room, I placed my hands on my hips. I couldn’t find it anywhere.

It was then that Damon arrived home and I quickly made my way out of his room. I went into the parlor where he was making himself a drink. “Nice of you to finally be home,” I said.

“Emma, how lovely to see you too,” he said swirling the drink before taking some.

“Well, if you came home you could’ve seen me earlier. Where were you?” He took another drink while eyeing me.

“If you must know,” he said making it seem like he was doing me such a favor, “I was with my girlfriend.”

“You have a girlfriend?” I asked raising an eyebrow.

“Yup. Caroline Forbes.”

“How did that happen? Or better yet,” I said moving towards him, “why?”

“Why do you think I have some ulterior motive?” he asked. We were about a foot apart and I had to tilt my head up to look at him.

“Because you are Damon Salvatore. And she’s a human.” A small smile played upon his lips. “Plus, I know what you’re really here for.” The smile died on his lips and concern washed over his face. I moved away and lounged on the couch in front of the fire.

“And what would that be?” he asked fighting to remain cool and calm. He nonchalantly took another sip from his drink.

“I can’t ruin the surprise,” I said smiling. “Where’s the fun in that?” Damon turned and stalked off obviously upset that I could know something.

Stefan came home from school later in the day. “Welcome home, Stefan,” I said walking towards the door.

“Where’s Damon?” he asked.

“Upstairs I think. I haven’t put a tracking device on him. Yet.”

“Funny,” said Stefan and moved past me and up the stairs.

“Don’t tell me you haven’t thought about it,” I called after him. “Make things a lot easier,” I mumbled to myself. “Directions would’ve been nice too.”

Grabbing a jacket I headed out to go look around the town. I had decided that I wanted to meet Elena Gilbert, if that was her real name. Because she looked just like Katherine and I was not related to Katherine that I knew of.

Coming into town I found Elena at the Mystic Grill. She was there with her lunch and a book in hand. She was absentmindedly eating. Going up to her I noticed the book in her hand was Wuthering Heights. “That’s a good book,” I said coming up to her.

She looked up a bit startled. “Yes, it is.” She obviously said it without thinking because her next question was, “Do I know you?”

“Probably not. I just came to town a few days ago. I’m Emma,” I said and held out my hand.

“Elena,” she said returning the handshake with a smile. “Where did you move in? I don’t remember any nearby houses for sale.”

“I’m staying at the Salvatore boarding house,” I said. As expected surprise crossed her face.

“So you know Stefan?” she asked.

“Yes, of course. We’re old friends,” I said with a secret smile. We got to talking more about Mystic Falls and anything you can imagine. In the end I really began to like Elena. She’s a sweet girl.

“Hey, I’m having a dinner tonight,” said Elena. “Stefan’s going to be there. Would you like to join us?”

“I’d love to,” I said and I meant it. Plus maybe it would help me to learn more about Elena. Glancing at her phone Elena suddenly started.

“I have to get going,” she said, gathering her stuff. “It was nice meeting you.” She flashed me a genuine smile.

“You too,” I said getting up. Elena threw some money on the table.

“My house at around eight,” she said before bolting out the door. I gave a small smile of success before going out too.

“You didn’t tell me Elena was having a dinner,” I said putting my hands on my hips. I stood in Stefan’s room just as he was writing in his journal.

“Well, it’s not as if you actually know Elena. And I don’t really want her around a murderer.” He gave me a pointed glare before closing his journal and putting it away.

Suddenly Damon entered the room holding a glass of alcohol mixed with blood. “I wasn’t informed of this dinner either,” he said. His expression was amused as he waited for Stefan’s adamant refusal.

“Neither of you are going!” said Stefan exasperated.

“I am!” I said happily and clapped my hands together. “I ‘met’ Elena today and she invited me over for dinner.”

“You’re not going. Call Elena and tell her you can’t make it.”

“I can’t lie to her,” I said. “That would be so unethical of me.” I could feel the smile tugging at the corners of my lips as I tried to keep a straight face.

“Oh but killing someone, that’s fine!” Stefan walked out of his room aggravated with both me and Damon who had just watched us with that same amused expression on his face. Once Stefan left I turned to Damon and shrugged.

“Do you have any idea why he’s so upset?” I asked.

“None,” said Damon as I walked past him and out of the room.
