World So Cold

Rachael

I came into the town and looked around. It was a long journey and I was hungry. It was night and not many people were out unfortunately. My options were limited. I walked over to the park and changed into a crow. I sat among the branches waiting for someone to walk by.

Fifteen minutes later I was rewarded when a girl was walking through the park. She seemed to be about my age. Usually I would go for a male but I couldn’t be picky now. I was hungry and she was there. I flew over to where she was and watched her walk.

She seemed to be a healthy well-kept individual. I gave a loud caw and was rewarded when she jumped. Someone wasn’t too comfortable walking alone in the dark. I flew down to land a few feet in front of her. She stopped walking and eyed me warily.

I turned to look at her. “What are you doing, silly crow?” she asked me nervously. She made a step to move forward. I turned straight towards her and she stopped. “Shoo,” she said flapping her arms. I stayed put. “Go away!” she said more forcefully and took another step forward.

I flew straight at her face. She gave a small scream and covered her face with her arms. My wings just brushed her face as I flew over her head. Shakily she lowered her arms and looked around. I changed into a vampire and dropped down silently behind her. “Stupid, crow,” she mumbled.

“That was a raven,” I said. The girl whirled around, her eyes wide and frightened.

“Sorry, you scared me. I didn’t hear you approach.” She placed a hand over her wildly beating heart. The sound was like music to my ears. It filled me with longing. “Um, do you need any help?” she asked me as I stared at her.

“Yeah, I do need something,” I said grinning wickedly. She took a step back as if on instinct. My eyes immediately shot down to her foot and she took another step back. “I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” I warned.

She turned around to run. She took two steps when I appeared right in front of her. Vampire speed came in handy. She stopped in her advance and turned around to try and run again. Again I appeared in front of her. This time close enough that she crashed into me.

I grasped her wrists and held her tight. “I told you not to do that,” I said. “It’s not you could escape from me.”

“Wha-what do you want?” she asked, her voice rising in terror.

“Merely your blood,” I said. I let my face change and my fangs come out. The look on her face was sheer terror. She was like a trapped animal. She tried to get out of my grasp. She kicked and clawed at me. None of her blows hit though. Finally tired of fighting she stopped, panting.

“Please don’t hurt me,” she begged. “I’ll do anything.”

“You’ll do what I want anyway,” I scoffed. “You have no choice.” I then bit into her neck and relished the feeling of her blood spilling into my mouth. Her blood was clean and rich. She started to scream and I clasped a hand over her mouth.

I drank deeply. I drank until her face became pale and her pulse was weak. I pulled back and looked at her. My mouth was stained with blood and some had gotten on her shirt. I licked my lips cleaning them off.

“Please,” she begged, “I don’t want to die.”

“I’m afraid you have no choice now,” I sighed. “I was just so hungry and you tasted so good.”

“Please,” she said weakly. I could feel her heartbeat slowing more.

“Alright, but you asked for it.” I took my wrist and bit into the skin. Instantly blood pooled around the surface. I placed it to the girl’s wrists and she drank hungrily. She drank until the wound healed itself. Still her eyes fluttered and her heartbeat stayed weak. “What’s your name?” I asked the girl.

“Rachael,” she managed to breathe out. Her breathing was labored and weak. Her eyes completely closed and her heart started to beat erratically. I stayed with her until her heart stopped beating. I then tossed her over my shoulder and made my way to the woods. If she was going to become a vampire, things would get interesting. If not… well, it’s just another dead body.

I placed the girl underneath a tree and then jumped up into a neighboring one. I relaxed on the branch with my back to the trunk of the tree. As I looked at the girl I started to feel a twinge of regret. Instantly though I banished the thought. I didn’t want to feel anything. If I allowed emotion in I would be a mess.

Having Damon back was not something I wanted. I wanted him to be gone. I wanted him to stay away, to never know I existed. But now he knows. He’s known for awhile. I guess a part of me knew too but refused to admit it. Damon brings up memories and feelings that I couldn’t feel. That I didn’t want to feel.
