Falling to Pieces

He wouldnt

He ran down the aisle as fast as he could, but he was still too late, she slipped through his fingers.
He fell to his knees beside her and took an icy hand in his.
“Rose?”
He leaned over her.
“GOD GET UP!” He yelled at her angrily.
“Call the ambulance,” Lindsey told Heaven.
She kneeled next to him.
He pressed his hand to where her heart was. And he couldn’t feel that race of a heartbeat that he used to, he couldn’t see her blush, hear the blood soar through her veins to paint pink on her skin. And he wondered if he would ever see that happen again.
He picked her up and held her.
“Please don't do this to me, Rose, please, I'm begging you,” he whispered.
She still didn’t move, didn’t wake up.
“Please,” he sobbed.
Lindsey put her arms around them. He fell in her arms with Rose held tightly in his own.
“Its going to be alright,” she said.
“No its not, this feels like the one,” he said.
“The doctors said that she would have…”
“They lie!”
“Joel…”
The ambulance came and Joel watched as they strapped Rose on those bed looking things and locked her in the back of the van. Lindsey drove him and the others to the hospital just out of the little town.
“Joel?” Heaven whispered.
“Yes?” His voice was quiet, weak, dead.
“She wont die.”
He didn’t know if it were true or if she was just trying to calm him down, it didn’t work.
They got to the hospital; Joel ran like a mad man and approached the desk.
“Where is she?” He demanded.
“Who?”
“Rosella Connors,” he said.
“And are you family?” The lady at the desk asked in the whole “I don't care” voice. He wanted to kill her. And it would be so easy to do, just a little snap at the neck.
“Sir?”
“No I’m not,” he growled, “She’s my fiancé, but she fainted at the wedding.”
The lady handed him a clipboard. “I need you to fill out some paper work.”
Joel glared at her.
“I DON'T WANT TO FILL OUT ANY OF YOUR FUCKING PAPER WORK!” he yelled.
“Sir…”
“Joel!” he heard.
He turned around and saw Kyle.
“WHAT DO YOU WANT?”
“Where’s my sister?”
“GOOD QUESTION, WHY DON'T YOU ASK ENSTIEN OVER HERE!”
Kyle looked at the nurse, who still had a composed face, he wanted to smack it off.
“I’m her brother,” he said.
“This way,” she said getting up.
“WAIT HE GETS TO SEE HER? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? HE WASN’T EVEN THERE!”
“Joel,” Lindsey whispered, touching his shoulder.
Joel stared up at the ceiling with the tears down his cheek, his fists were balled up at his sides, like he would punch someone.
“I want to see her, I want to see her now,” he said in a cold voice.
“I know Joel,” she said.
“What are they doing to her?”
“I don't know Joel, they’re going to do everything to keep her alive.”
“I want to see her.”
“I know, Joel.”
“No you don't,” he said shaking his head.
“Look at me,” She spoke sternly.
Joel looked at her.
“I know,” she whispered. And she did, she lost Ryan.
He pulled her in his arms and held in the tears for her, to keep her strong.
“I don't want this stupid clipboard,” he spat.
She held him tighter and smiled at his stubbornness.
“I know.”
“I don't know her insurance.”
She laughed bleakly.
After awhile, Kyle came out of the room.
“You can see her now,” He said.
Joel hopped up and followed the nurse to Rose’s room. When he got there she still hadn’t woken up. Her heartbeat was still slow.
He knew what he had to do, he had to bite her.
He sat on the side of her bed.
“Wake up, Rose, so I don't have to do this to you like this,” he whispered.
* * * * *
At first all I heard was that familiar beeping noise.
Then I felt his hand.
I opened my eyes and then turned my head, knowing he would be there.
“Joel,” I breathed, hating how weak I sounded.
He popped up and kissed my forehead.
“Oh, Rose,” he sighed in relief.
“I’m s..” I began.
“Shh,” Joel said.
I could barely keep my eyes open, much less talk. I felt so weak.
Joel ran his thumb across my hand.
“Do you remember when you told me that love inst powerful enough to stop death?”
I nodded, making me dizzy.
“I believe it is,” he said, “Because love isn’t only about feeling and emotions, it’s the actions that make it love.”
“Joel,” I breathed.
He shook his head. “No.”
“But…”
I couldn’t say more.
“You win, Rose, I’ll bite you if you still want to live forever.”
“Knock, knock,” Kyle said.
Joel rolled his eyes.
“You're up!” He said smiling.
He turned to Joel.
“Can I have a moment with her?”
Joel stared at him, then me. I knew that he didn’t want me to be alone with him now that he knew that Kyle was a werewolf.
“Its ok,” I struggled.
I felt in a haze…
Joel nodded. He stood up and kissed my burning forehead. He frowned and pressed his hand to my forehead. It felt so good.
“I’ll be back,” and then he left.
Kyle waited a moment.
“Dad talked to me.”
“Jerk,” I breathed.
“What?”
“You talked to him…didn’t let me know”
“You know though?’
“Yes.”
“And you know that Joel is a vamp?”
“Yes.”
His eyes grew wide. “You knew!”
“Of course.”
“So how, after you know the family secret, can you marry him? We are enemies, do you understand that?”
“They are willing to get along”
“You mean those traitors?”
“They want peace.”
“I hate them all of them!” He hissed full of loath.
I smiled.
“Will you hate me?” I whispered.
And then he got it.
“How could you do that to us!” He yelled.
I didn’t say anything.
“I guess once I knew what he was, I knew that he would want to damn you too,” he said, “Didn’t think it would be so soon though.”
The door jiggled. It was locked.
“ I was bit by a werewolf,” she said, “ That’s why I have the gold eye.”
I looked up at Kyle. He wouldn’t.
But the look in his eyes said that he would.
