'Safe' Is Not A Word In My Vocabulary

Chapter 40

Jacob’s POV

“Wait, she said what?” Paul snickered when we sat around Emily’s kitchen table.

Everyone was on good terms now, seeing as the danger had passed and Sam had stepped down. We even went back and forth across the borders as necessary and the Cullens, who we’d learned to trust, were aloud on our side as well.

Bree was the only one to really take advantage of that, cause’ she loved the beach here, but it was hard not to see her as the enemy anymore.

In fact, Cent, Bree and Quil took Anthony and Claire out to the beach and it was just the guys’ Emily, and Rachel in the house.

“I cant sleep with her until I turn eighteen, we had to pretend Cent’s a year younger than she is just to get away with it once.” I admitted honestly.

Paul seemed to be ready to make a big deal out of it, but Rachael was chewing on her lip while she thought it over.

“She has a good point y’know, Jake’s a minor, and it’s technically a illegal anyways.” Nerd.

Paul looked at her in shock when he saw that she was taking this seriously but still tried to make a joke out of it. “Cant he just double wrap it?” he snickered, making Rachel glare at him and me roll my eyes.

He may have seemed older with his experience and whatnot, but he was only seventeen too. And barely, his birthday was the seventh, Anthony’s was the third.

“Getting Cent pregnant isn't the problem, it’s trying to keep people from talking about it, Cent could go to jail for fucking a minor.”

Ugh, did she have to say it like that.

I swear, doesn’t she know when it got awkward, it was time to stop talking. I didn’t want to consider that, or the idea of Paul getting in my sisters pants, and was grateful when my phone rang.

“Hey Cent,” I said smiling.

“Hey Jake,” she said, and I heard Claire squealing in the background. “You still on the beach?” I asked and I saw Paul and Rachel talking quietly now, Paul looked desperate and Rachael looked both stern and stubborn.

I rolled my eyes while Cent answered. “Yeah, Ant fell asleep and I’m taking him home.”

I smiled at that and Emily gathered the plates the guys’ had been eating from and put them in the sink. Everyone was watching a football game still, oblivious to the convo. that went on between me, my sister and her boyfriend.

I ignored them again, focusing on Centhua.

I could tell there was more, I knew her voice well enough to tell there was something else on her mind. “Is everything okay? Did something happen?” I asked. I heard her laugh humorlessly.

“No not yet anyways, tonight's the full moon.”

My stomach lurched at those words and I almost dropped the phone. I felt sick. “I’ll meet you at home,” I said dryly.

“Okay, bye Jake, love you.” She said and I heard Bree call her name.

“I love you too,” and I snapped my phone shut, rubbing my temples.

“Jake, what’s up man, you look kinda pale,” Embry said bluntly. I shook my head at him and stood up, making the couch jostle. Seth and Jared.

“Full moon,” I muttered walking out. I heard a few mumbles from in the house by those who weren't eating or watching TV.

As soon as I was in the woods behind Emily’s place, I stripped down, tied my clothes to my leg, and sprinted home.

Cent was already there, which made me wonder if she’d been speeding with the baby in the car. Her eyes met mine where I stood, partially hidden in the trees and I phased back while pulling on my clothes. I jogged forward and she had Anthony cradled in her arms.

He was asleep. His mouth made a little ‘o’ shape and his hand was curled into a loose fist. I smiled at him and Cent wordlessly turned and walked into the house.

I followed behind while she put Anthony in his crib, the dim clouds offering little light to nursery Alice and Bree had made.

He curled in on himself making him look even smaller and Cent quietly walked out, I followed her a second later, my eye catching the unused baby shower gifts in the closet and making me smirk, and then sigh.

When I walked out, Centhua was sitting on the couch and biting her lip.

I sat beside her and wrapped my arms around her while she buried her face in my chest. It was silent for a while, until..

“What are we gonna do?” Cent whispered hoarsely.

She wasn’t crying, but there was so many mixed emotions in her eyes that she might as well have been. I didn’t know what to say so I didn’t say anything. I kissed her forehead and we sat in silence for a long time.

“Chances are he’s been exposed to the gene anyways, there isn't really anything we can do to stop it.” I said at last.

She was quiet and looked up at me playing with her ring and biting her lip again. There was nothing left to say, and nothing left to do but wait.

XxX

I was going with her, we were camping out in a way, we drove to a deserted part of the forest and waited for the moon to rise. Cent had Anthony in her arms and he was wide awake.

His eyes stared at the lush green leaves above us and the thin layer clouds blocking the stars.

He was roughly three months old, and for the last two moons he’d slept. But then again so had Cent. He wasn’t sleeping now, and that worried me.

Cent looked on edge too.

Her eyes were looking up at the sky just like his were, as I watched her face. They were changing color little by little, turning to more of a tawny yellow than a chocolate brown. Her hands twitched continuously and eventually I had to take Anthony from her.

Half an hour after that and she bolted. Her feet pounding against the earth and leaving me. I stared after her retreating form in pain, hearing her clothes shred as she raced out of sight, and then I looked down at Anthony.

He whimpered, the moon peaking out a sliver, and his eyes changed color. I jumped in surprise at the sight, but set him gingerly on the ground.

He looked completely peaceful as he laid on his stomach. Not at all like Cent had.

He blinked up at the clouds, and then at me, as if waiting for permission. I didn’t know why, but I felt the need to give him it.

“Go ahead Ant, go with your momma, I’ll be along in a sec.”

I couldn’t believe he’d understood me, but in the next second, he shifted too and launched himself forward, onto four legs, leaving a trail of ripped clothes behind him.

Fur sprouted out and his eyes changed to a bright blue shade as he grew at least four times his size. He took off, already running to follow Centhua.

I didn’t waste any time in following after both of them, stripping and phasing myself while running behind my little sandy-grey colored wolf pup.

I caught up easily, seeing as my legs were longer, but when I got to the clearing, Cent and Ant were already together. Centhua nuzzled his face and I approached slowly.

Her thoughts were blocked with the full moon, and so were Anthony’s but she looked at me in recognition.

Anthony yelped and took off again, expecting us to follow, and pausing when we didn’t. Cent nodded for me to go first.

I did.

As soon as Ant had me following he ran off near the Cullens. Just close enough to smell them, he whimpered and growled. Centhua and I caught up to him and Cent nudged him towards the other direction.

I did the same when he didn’t budge and Cent held my eyes for a long moment before he cooperated.

Is that Anthony? Seth’s voice nearly blew my eardrums out and made me jump.

Jeez kid, a little warning might’ve been nice, and yes, I thought.

Oops, sorry Seth replied.

Centhua looked at me curiously before running after him. I sighed mentally and followed both of them.

Look Seth, just let me focus right now okay, I thought in irritation. Where did he even come from? We didn’t have patrols at this hour anymore.

Gotcha’ bye. He thought before phasing back. I sighed out loud this time and tried to catch up with my restless family.

XxX

I was ready to drop in the morning.

Those two can run let me tell you, but at least it made it easy to tell who Anthony took after.
I was dragging when we got home, but I still shifted back so I could get the two of them clothes to replace their shredded ones.

I jogged outside and tossed Cent some of hers, which she caught in her mouth. Anthony sat tamely on the ground, staring out at the rising sun that you could clearly see today.

Cent phased back in front of me and I groaned out loud.

Her body was amazing, and I couldn’t even touch her because I’d no doubt get carried away.

She turned away from me while she dressed, rolling her eyes and I walked over to Anthony. He looked at me, and seemed to sense it was time to phase back, as he started shrinking down and changing to a human again.

He was on his stomach; I picked him up and brought him inside before he froze in the snow. He was warmer already though, from being a wolf, and I frowned.

As soon as he was dressed, I carried him to his crib and tucked him in. He closed his eyes obediently and yawned before sneezing.

I smiled at that before walking out and heading to the room I shared with Cent.

She was already there, curled up on the bed and fast asleep. I sighed, before collapsing down on the bed too, one arm thrown lazily around her waist.

I passed out beside her, our baby fast asleep next door.
