While You Were Away

XLIV

I twisted my rally towel nervously as I watched the zamboni clear the ice in order to let the game go into overtime. The Wings had lost the first two games. At the end of each game though, I wasn’t surprised. They didn’t seem to be playing to their full potential. Now it was game three, and the team I had grown to know and love seemed like they were back.

Both teams had scored in the first, and in the second. The Wings had managed to get 3-2 in the second, but the Sharks somehow managed to score a goal towards the end, sending the game into overtime. Emily was sitting next to me, just as nervous as I was. She had grown attached to some of the guys on the Wings, even if she didn’t want to admit it, so a win would have been big for her too.

As the game picked up, I felt my stomach tying itself it knots. Watching both teams battle for the puck, I couldn’t help but keep my fingers crossed. After Jimmy stopped the puck, I heard Emily laugh, causing me to turn to look at her.

“What are you laughing at?” I asked, a slightly confused expression on my face.

“You have your fingers crossed!” She pointed out, a finger aimed at my hands that were place in my lap.

“That’s a habit I have. I mostly do it in overtime,” I said and she laughed again.

“I can’t really laugh…I’ve noticed I do it too sometimes. As if it helps,” She said, rolling her eyes.

“Are you going to go see Val?” Emily asked as we waited for the crowd to die down after the Sharks overtime win. I looked from the ice to her and nodded.

“Yeah, not for long though.”

“Okay, give me your keys and I’ll be waiting out there,” She said, holding her hand out. I dug through my purse and dropped the keys in her hand. We stood up and went into the main concourse. As we approached the Gordie Howe entrance, we separated. I took the elevator down to the lower level and began walking down the long hall to the dressing room.

As I was walking, I passed a few Sharks players. I ignored them, seeing as I wasn’t in the mood to argue with any of them. Suddenly my phone rang and I paused to dig through my purse to find it.

“Hello?” I asked, wondering why Emily was calling me.

“You gave me Val’s keys, not yours…” I closed my eyes tightly after looking into my purse, seeing that I had, in fact, given her the wrong keys.

“Okay, just come by the locker room, you remember how to get here?”

“Yeah, I’m already on my way actually. I’ll see you in a few.” I put my phone back in my pocket as I saw another Shark player walking towards me. After we had passed each other, I heard him mutter something at me.

“Excuse me?” I asked, turning to look at him. He turned to look at me, trying to hide the surprise on his face.

“What?”

“Did you just call me a bitch?” I demanded, trying to remember who it was that I was currently talking to.

“No…” He said and I narrowed my eyes at him.

“If you’re going to try and talk shit, at least own up to it,” I said and he rolled his eyes.

“Would you?”

“Would I what? Own up to something I did? Yeah.”

“So own up to shit talking me.” I just stared at him for a second.

“What the hell are you talking about?”

“You’re the one that was saying shit to me on twitter or whatever, but you’re not owning up to that. That’s kind of hypocritical?” Suddenly it hit me that he thought I was Emily. And it hit me that I was talking to Logan Couture.

“Wow you really are a dumbass, huh?” He whipped around to see Emily standing there and I couldn’t help but laugh.

“Jesus Christ, there’s two of you?!” He demanded.

“Yeah, however, big difference between us if you can’t notice, besides the fact that one is dating a King and the other is engaged to a Wing…”

“But..I..”

“And for the record, I was the one talking about you, not her. You seem to handle stuff better when you’re not dealing with it in person. Come on Amy,” She said, brushing past him as she made her way towards me to grab my arm and walk to the locker room.
