Beauty in the Unspoken

Everyone was in the courtyard of the college. We were all talking in our own little groups catching up on things that we had missed in the years we had been apart. I couldn’t help but wonder what was in store this summer. I knew having my best friends back was going to entail the best summer of my life, but I knew that the best things in life must end. I pushed that thought to the back of my mind and concentrated on what was coming out of Kennedy’s mouth.

“Aurora did you hear anything I just said?” Kennedy asked with a frown on his face.

“Sorry no, I was thinking about something. What did you say?” I asked with an apologetic look.

“It’s ok. I was just asking if you wanted to sit with me on the plane back to Tempe.” He repeated with a glimmer of hope in his eyes.

“Kennedy of course I would.” I stated smiling up at him. The glimmer in his eyes ignited and his lips turned up in a huge smile.

I couldn’t help but feel lost in his smile. It was so contagious. It was something that could brighten even the worst of days.

I felt arms slip around my waist and the smile on Kennedy’s face faltered for the slightest of moments. I felt breath on my neck and lips on my ear.

“How’s my girl doing?” I heard Garrett question.

“Your girl is being stolen by me.” Kennedy said smugly.

“What?” Garrett gasped.

“You missed you chance I’m flying away with Kennedy and there is nothing you can do to stop it!” I exclaimed dramatically. I broke free of Garrett’s grasp and jumped into Kennedy’s arms.

“How dare you, you trader. I thought we were friends.” Garrett said appalled.

“You just can’t keep true love apart.” Kennedy replied.

Garrett fell to his knees and sobbed, banging his fists on the ground, bellowing out ‘why’ and ‘no’. People around us started to stare and whisper about our weird actions.

I hoped down from Kennedy’s arms as everyone in the group began to laugh. I bowed as did my counterparts. The group politely applauded. My laughter died down as I turned to my best friend.

Garrett Nickelson was many things; afraid to be overdramatic with his best friends was not one of them. It was one of the things that made me and him get along the best. We both took theatre throughout high school, and were in many of the plays out high school put on.

I jumped on him and put my arms around his neck squeezing tightly. I had missed him the most. He was the one that knew everything about me, well maybe not everything, he definitely didn’t know about my growing feelings for his band mate. I just couldn’t bring myself to tell him because I knew there were still some unresolved feelings from when he and I had dated a few years prior. I felt like it would just be rude to divulge this information with him.

“I missed you so much GarBear.” I said into his ear.

“I have missed you A.” He said just as quietly.

“You excited to return to Tempe?” He asked slinging his arm around my shoulder.

“Are you kidding me? I have done nothing but dream of Tempe since the beginning of semester.” I explained.

“Good cause we are so throwing a party when we get back!” He spilled excitedly. “You’re sitting next to me on the plane right?” He questioned smiling brightly.

My stomach tightened just like it always did when he smiled at me. All the feelings that should have gone away when we broke up came right back and in full force.

“Sorry Gar, Kennedy already asked me to sit next to him.” I said softly. I didn’t want him to be upset that I choice Kennedy over him.

“It’s alright. I need to talk to Jared about something anyways.” Bringing his smile back covering his disappointment.

I kissed his cheek and walked over to Anna and Pat. They were talking about Star Wars. Imagine that.

I tapped Anna on the shoulder. Breaking her away mid-sentence, she turned to me.

“Can I talk to you in a little bit?” I asked politely.

“Sure I’m almost done then we can go pack. Since we leave in 4 days!” Anna said turning back to Pat and what they were talking about.

Looking the group over again and I caught eyes with Kennedy. He was looking at me with a glow in his eyes that I have never seen before. I smiled at him, He beamed back. I looked down at my feet and blushed.

This Summer Just got a lot more complicated and way more interesting!
