You Know I'm Never Gonna Let You Go

Fifteen

Avery

I had to admit, I was a little surprised when Alex handed the napkin with the girls number to the guy in the booth behind us. I half expected him to at least keep it, even after last night.

This made me realize two things: One, I’d made the right decision by not taking Alex back yet, because my lack of faith in him only proved to me that I wasn’t ready to trust him yet and two, Alex had chanced, just like he’d said. I had trouble believe him at first, but that little gesture right there proved to me he wasn’t the young boy I’d once known anymore.

Alex caught me staring at him. “What?” I shook my head. “Nothing.” I mumbled, but couldn’t help but smile a little. I accidently bumped my foot against him, but instead of pulling away I kept it there. Alex kept looking at me with an odd expression on his face until I couldn’t take it anymore.

“Fine!” I exclaimed. “I’m surprised okay. I thought you were gonna keep her number!” I expected Alex to laugh at my silly outburst, but he was dead serious. “Really?” He sounded a little disappointed. “Ave, I told you I changed. I just wish you would believe me.” “I do believe you.” I said sincerely. “Well, after this I mean.” Alex chuckled. “I’m glad.”

We continued to eat the rest of our breakfast mostly in silence. Neither of us really sure what to say, especially after last night. It wasn’t exactly awkward or uncomfortable, just a little….. weird.

We finished eating and got back to the car. It was my turn to drive and besides, Alex looked like he was gonna pass out any second now. I started the car and looked at Alex, who was already half asleep. “What on earth have you been doing that got you so tired.” I laughed.

“Writing.” He mumbled and yawned. “I got inspired and I couldn’t sleep anyways.” I shook my head, only Alex would stay up all night just to write a song, no matter how tired he would be the next day. “Just get so sleep. I’ll wake you up when we arrive at the next hotel.” I said and Alex nodded, too tired to answer.

----------------------------------------------------------------

I’d been driving for about three hours now and, aside from Alex’s snores, there was no sound in the car. I like the silence, it gave me some time to think about things. I’d gone over the situation over and over again and finally come to a conclusion.

I found myself willing to slowly start trusting Alex again for the first time in years. He proved to me he’d changed and my trust in him only increased, but he still had a long way to go.

I came across a gas station and decided to get a cup of coffee. Not wanting to wake Alex up I tried to by as quiet as possible. When I came back Alex was still asleep, not even noticing I’d left. I couldn’t help but smile a little, he looked so damn adorable when he was asleep.

I accidently dropped my wallet and ducked down to pick it up when my eye fell on a piece of paper that was laying on the floor of the car. I picked it up and opened it.

I immediately recognized the handwriting as Alex. I scan the text and realized it were lyrics, I guess it was the song that Alex had been working on all night. I was about to put it back, not wanting to be nosy, but a couple of words grabbed my attention.

It was like a time bomb set into motion
We knew that we were destined to explode
And if I had to pull you out of the wreckage
You know I'm never gonna let you go
We're like a time bomb
Gonna lose it
Let's diffuse it
Baby, we're like a time bomb
But I need it
Wouldn't have it any other way

Soon I found myself reading the whole song. It was an amazing song, even without music I knew this was going to be a hit. I was so focused on the piece of paper in front of me I didn’t realize Alex was waking up.

“You like it?” I jumped a little when he spoke. I blushed and handed him the paper. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to read it, I just….” I fell silent, not sure how to continue. “That’s okay?” He said. “But do you like the song?” It sounded like he really wanted my opinion, so I decided to be honest.

“I love it. It’s an amazing song. Whoever this is about is a lucky girl.” I tried to sound indifferent, but I was sure Alex could hear the hint of jealousy. Alex shook his head. “Not really, I’m the lucky one. She’s an amazing girl, but I was stupid enough to let her go. I love her so much, but I fucked up.”

“Oh.” Was all I could say. It felt like I was gonna burst out in tears any second. “Ave you’re so stupid!” Alex exclaimed and I looked up at him confused. “That song is for you. It’s about you, about us!” I stared at him, unable to speak. “You wanna here it?” He asked and I nodded.

From the get-go, I knew this was hard to hold
Like a crash, the whole thing spun out of control
Oh, on a wire, we were dancing
Two kids, no consequences
Pull the trigger without thinking
There's only one way down this road

It was like a time bomb set into motion
We knew that we were destined to explode
And if I had to pull you out of the wreckage
You know I'm never gonna let you go
We're like a time bomb
Gonna lose it
Let's diffuse it
Baby, we're like a time bomb
But I need it
Wouldn't have it any other way

Well, there's no way out of this, so let's stay in
Every storm that comes also comes to an end
Oh, resistance is useless
Just two kids stupid and fearless
Like a bullet shooting the lovesick
There's only one way down this road

It was like a time bomb set into motion
We knew that we were destined to explode
And if I had to pull you out of the wreckage
You know I'm never gonna let you go
We're like a time bomb
Gonna lose it
Let's diffuse it
Baby, we're like a time bomb
But I need it
Wouldn't have it any other way

Got my heart in your hands
Like a time bomb ticking
It goes off; we start again
When it breaks, we fix it
Got your heart in my hands
Like a time bomb ticking
We should know better
But we won't let go

It was like a time bomb set into motion
We knew that we were destined to explode
And if I had to pull you out of the wreckage
You know I'm never gonna let you let me go
We're like a time bomb
Gonna lose it
Let's diffuse it
Baby, we're like a time bomb
But I need it
Wouldn't have it any other way

Once he finished the song he grabbed my hand, looking into my eyes. “I mean it Ave. I will never let you go, never, all I need is a chance.” I nodded. “One chance.” I said. “That’s all you get. One chance.” “That’s all I need.” He whispered and pressed his lips against mine.
