Never Meant to Be
Chapter Twelve
September 16th, 2010
Thursday
Flawless Beauty Hair & Makeup Salon, Boston, MA
10:30 A.M.
Evangeline was in the middle trimming a woman’s hair when she heard her cell phone ring from her purse.
“Talia can you get that for me,” she saw Talia answer the phone.
“Hello? Oh hey David, it’s Talia. Hold on I’ll get her.” She came over and finished trimming the woman’s hair while Evangeline went and talked to David.
“Hey so what’s the plans for today?” she asked happily.
“It’s to cold to swim but we could go for a walk on the beach. There’s a really nice one down in South Boston called Pleasure Bay.”
“That sounds wonderful,” she said. “I get out at 4:00,”
“I’ll pick you and Trenton up at 4:30,” he said. Talia had just finished with the client and was saying goodbye to the woman. She turned to Evangeline and said
“You two are so cute together.” Evangeline smiled and said
“He’s so good with Trenton, I love it.” She thought back to yesterday at the aquarium and the restaurant. “Trenton loves him too. David carried him around mostly yesterday and whenever I tried to take him back he’d scream and get upset.”
“He’s perfect,” said Talia. Evangeline smiled and said
“We’ll see,”
At 4:00 the girls closed up the salon and left. Evangeline picked up Trenton and rushed home and quickly got ready to go out. It was the end of September and the weather wasn’t warm enough to swim but it was still mild enough out for Evangeline to put on a sundress and sandals. Trenton wore his Batman T-shirt and shorts. She was ready just in time for David to knock on the door. She opened the door and Trenton dashed out and clung to David’s leg. He laughed and said
“Hey buddy,” Trenton smiled up at him and giggled. David picked him up and said “Ready to go to the beach?” Trenton giggled again and put his face up against David’s shoulder. David looked at her and said
“You look beautiful,”
“Thanks,” she said feeling a warm sensation spread through her. She closed and locked her door and they headed out. They got to the beach fifteen minutes later and Trenton bounced in his car seat excitedly as he looked out the window. They parked and David picked Trenton up out his car seat. He noticed the necklace on Trenton and said
“Cool chain, where’d he get it?” Evangeline froze and said
“I um, bought it for him,”
“Is he gonna play hockey do you think?” asked David.
“Maybe, it seems like a great sport even though I’ve never even been to one game before.”
“You’re definitely coming to my games,” he said smiling. “I’ll get you free season tickets to the front row.”
“I’d love to see you play,” she said. “It would introduce Trenton to the sport.”
“He’ll love it,” said David. They made there way down to the water. Evangeline felt so free as the sundress billowed in the wind around her legs. David let Trenton down to play with the sand and he swung an unexpecting Evangeline up into his arms. She yelled in surprise and he carried her towards the water.
“Don’t dump me in!” she said laughing.
“I’m not gonna,” he said holding her closer. She liked the feeling of being supported in his arms. She felt like turning her face into his chest and snuggling up like she did with Nathan. He set her down so her feet were in the water. It was cold and she jumped backwards. He laughed and said
“It’s not that bad,” Trenton came walking clumsily down into the water laughing. He fell down still laughing into the water. “He likes it.” Trenton splashed around and David picked him back up swinging him into his arms. David didn’t seem to care about the large amount of water that got splashed down the front of his shirt and jeans. He sat down in the sand with him and said “Look at all the shells,” Trenton crawled of David’s lap and picked up a white clam shell. He looked at it for a bit before handing it to David. As Trenton found more shells he wanted to keep he kept handing them to David who kept putting them into his pockets.
“We’ll bring a bucket next time,” laughed Evangeline as David could no longer fit any of the shells into his overstuffed jeans pockets. Trenton eventually grew tired from searching for shells and fell asleep in David’s arms. The two went and sat down up against a soft sand dune and David let sleeping Trenton curl up against him. They watched the setting sun and David said
“This is absolutely perfect, you’re absolutely perfect.” She looked into his gray eyes again and he leaned forward and pressed his lips to hers. Evangeline kissed back loving the feeling of his soft lips against her own. When they pulled apart all thoughts of Nathan were erased from her mind.
