Never Meant to Be
Chapter Twenty
September 26th, 2010
Sunday
Carroll Lake, Nashville, TN
2:00 A.M.
They lay in each others arms under the moonlight. Evangeline shivered slightly as a cool breeze ran over her naked body. She pushed herself closer against Nathan’s bare chest and looked up at the thick long stream of silver glistening stars. She thought about the two of them leaving together. Going back and grabbing Trenton and leaving. Getting in a car and going until they got far away. Maybe California or even Hawaii. She looked over at Nathan who was also looking up the sky in deep thought. She saw him playing with the wedding ring on his finger, slowly moving it back and forth between each finger. She kissed him on his chest and he looked down at her. She tried to read his face for what was going through his mind but he was expressionless. She watched him continue to play with his wedding ring and then saw him flick it over to where his clothes were on the ground. He stood up with a smile like he was free of some burden and then said
“Let’s go swimming,” she watched him walk down to the water and dove in butt naked. Laughing she sat up ff the ground and said
“Is it cold?” He came to the surface and said
“No, it’s not to bad come on in,” she stood up and walked over to the waters edge and put her feet in. It was a little colder than the air. She ignored the feeling of mud between her toes as she stepped further in. She was up to her waist when Nathan came over, grabbed onto her and pulled her in. She screamed he held her up to her neck in the water. She laughed and splashed at him trying to get away. “I’m never gonna let you go,” he said kissing her temple as she calmed down and went limp in his arms. She sat in his arms and they floated around looking up at the stars again.
“I see a shooting star!” she said pointing up at a bright ball of light streaking through the sky. “And another one!”
“It’s a meteor shower,” said Nathan as they watched several streak across the sky.
“It’s so beautiful,” she whispered. They watched until Evangeline got cold. Nathan felt her shiver and said
“Time to get out,” He carried her out and placed her down on the grass.
“What time is it?” she asked. Nathan reached over to grab his cell phone from his pile of clothes and said
“3:00, I better be getting back soon. I have to make my flight.” She felt sadness crash down on her as he got up and pulled on his boxers.
“I don’t want to go,” she said feeling a few tears fall from eyes.
“I don’t either,” he said. “But I have too.” More tears streamed down her face and Nathan bent down and took her face in his hands. He wiped them away and kissed her cheek. “I would give anything to stay here with you tonight.” She sniffled a little and stood up next to him and began putting on her clothes. “Let’s go,” he said. The two went back over to where they’d left the horses and rode off back down the trail. Evangeline kept the pace at a slow trot, not wanting to get back fast. The barn finally came into view. Evangeline dismounted and as quietly as before, she put the horses away and the two went out to the front deck so they could talk without having to whisper.
“I really don’t want you to leave,” she said sadly.
“I know but I have to, I’ll be back on Monday, I have practice early in the morning so I’ll get here by night.” She jumped into his arms and gave him a long kiss before they pulled apart and looked into each others eyes. The soft look in her two multicolored eyes made him want to melt inside. “I love you,” he said.
“I love you too,” She watched him turn away and go down the porch stairs. He walked over to the car he had rented and drove there with. He opened the door and said
“You are the most amazing person in the world Evangeline, I love you so much.” And then he got into the car and drove down the driveway, back to the airport. She stared down the road long after he had gone from sight and she could no longer hear the crunching of rocks beneath the tires of his car. She sat down on the stairs, put her face in her hands and cried.
