Someone To Save Me

Going to the Chapel.

“If my dress doesn’t fit I might cry” I said to Trina as she made breakfast for the bridesmaids and my grandparents.

“You’ll be fine, you don’t even look like you’re expecting” she stated calmly.

“You know Trina. I’m really glad that you’re here. I mean I have Nonie but if my mom and dad can’t be here I’m glad to have you an Troy” I said letting myself tear up slightly. “I don’t think that I could have ended up with a better family.”

“Oh sweetie. Troy and I will always be here for you and Sid and this baby. And it’s a good thing that we haven’t done our makeup yet” she said wiping her eyes. “I don’t think that Sid could have found a better girl to want to spend his life with. You keep him on his toes, and take care of him like no one else really can. Katie, you’ve filled this gap in his life he didn’t really know was there until he met you.”

I couldn’t hide my smile as Trina hugged me, it was like my own mother wrapping her arms around me.

“Katie, I just came from the house” Troy said walking into the kitchen. “Sid sent something for you.” He held out a small gift bag with a card slid in the side.

“I told him not to . . .”

“You should be used to him showering you with gifts by now” Trina commented.

“I’m going to go open this in his old room” I said with a smile taking the bag from Troy’s hands. But before going upstairs I gave him a big hug, we didn’t say anything but I saw Trina smiling out of the corner of my eye.

I sat on his bed and opened the card first:

My Katie.
In just a few hours I’m going to finally be able to call you something that I’ve been waiting over a year and a half to do. I can’t wait for the doors to open up and to finally be able to see you today, it’s been miserable sleeping in our bed with out you. I knew from the moment you walked into that pool hall that I wanted to know you, and from the second the words ‘facial hair of a 12 year old Iranian girl’ left your lips I was hooked. Don’t ask me why but I was. When I look back at all the time I’ve been able to spend with you -the tough times and the amazing times- I can honestly say that my life has gotten better with you around. There was a part of me that was missing until I met you. Today is already the happiest day of my life and it’s only going to get better. Why did we decide to have a late afternoon wedding? Morning would have been better, but I guess I can wait a bit longer. It’s worth the wait if I get to spend the rest of my life with you and our kid. I love you and I can’t wait for you to finally be a Crosby.

Yours always.

Sid.

I wiped a tear from my face and pulled out the box from the bag. On it is a post-it saying ‘Wear me today’. Opening the lid I couldn’t hold back the gasp, in the box sat a wide cuff bracelet, completely covered in diamonds set in white gold. It was far to extravagant and probably cost a fortune, but that’s Sid for you. I told him no gifts and he still goes and buys something that is above and beyond.

On your wedding day you’re already an emotional mess, but add in the pregnancy hormones and you’re a blubbering idiot. All of my makeup is waterproof, my hair has so many layers of hair spray it better stay all day and the majority of the night. The car ride to the church from Sid’s childhood home was quiet and seemed to take forever. I was all ready minus my dress, which we’d be putting on once we got there. And as far as I knew everything was running smoothly. It’s just a waiting game at this point, a long and torturous waiting game.

~Sid’s POV~

I stood there with my family sitting in the row directly in front of me, and the priest beside me waiting rather impatiently as our friends walked down the aisle, first Meg and Max, then Alex and Goose, Janie and Tanger, and finally Charlie and Jordan. My heart pounds heavily in my chest as the music changes and the doors swing open, when everyone is looking at her she instantly locks eyes with me and smiles. She looks stunning, her dress plain white fitting her body tight until the waist where it fans out, it has pockets, I know that much it’s all she would tell me about it. Her hair curled and pinned back with pearls and crystals, and her makeup, perfect, she looked like an angel, she glowed.

Poppy placed her hand in mine and patted me on the back before taking his place in the front pew. ‘Hi’ she mouthed as the ceremony started. I kissed her hand softly as I waited for the ceremony to be over and for her to finally be my wife.

~Katie’s POV~

That’s it, months and months of planning and not even an hour later we’re married and on the way to the reception.

“Sid, I’m so hungry” I said tucked into my husbands side.

“Well then” he said grabbing a bag from inside the mini bar. “It’s a good thing I brought this.” He pulled out a sandwich and a Capri sun.

“You are by far the best husband ever!” I said kissing him firmly before taking a bite of the sandwich. “What did I do to hook such an amazing guy?”

“Didn’t you read the card? You had me the second you walked into that pool hall.” I couldn’t help but smile as he tenderly kissed my jaw. “You look absolutely gorgeous by the way. I didn’t think it was possible for you to look this good but wow. I almost missed the entire ceremony just because I was busy looking at you.”

“You want a bite?” I asked holding the sandwich up to his lips. He took a big bite and smiled at me.

“I should know not to say anything remotely serious to you while you’re pregnant and eating. You forget about it as soon as you hear it.”

“What?” I said seriously for a moment before smiling. “I’m kidding, thank you baby. You look handsome, I didn’t think it was possible but the tux is just so, yum.”

“Yum?”

“This sandwich is really good. Thanks for thinking about it. Baby needed food, isn’t that right little one?” I said looking down at my slight baby bump. “We’re going to have to enjoy the next almost 5 months before they make their grand entrance.”

“Don’t worry I intend on spending the entire summer enjoying our time together” he said kissing me firmly.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, for the first time in public Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Crosby” the DJ said with a little too much drama as Sid and I walked into the reception. We had opted for an outdoor location, making it feel less like a fancy ordeal and more like a family event. The glass clinking started as we got closer to the dance floor.

“Just so you know I absolutely hate this part of weddings, if I want to kiss my husband I will you don’t need to tell me” I said turning towards him. “Lucky for you and everyone here I do.” I smiled took a hold of his tie and kissed him softly until I heard clapping and the glass clinking stop.

“If everyone would sit for the newly weds first dance as husband and wife” the DJ said as Sid took my hand and spun me into his chest.

“I hope you like the song.”

“Why wouldn’t I like the song Sid?”

“You let me pick it and I had a difficult time finding one . . .” the music started and I instantly recognized the tune. “Luckily Train came out with this one and it seemed to fit. Just swap café for pool hall” he said with a smile making me laugh lightly.

“You’re lucky, I happen to love this song” I replied feeling his arms wrap tighter around me. “I love you.”

“I love you too Katie.”

“Is it bad that I hope this song it’s too long? I know normally I think it’s too short but your kid is pushing on my bladder” I said softly so no one else could hear, he let out his real laugh the laugh that only a few people know before kissing the top of my head.

“I think it’s just a little bit longer” he replied.

“Good because I’m going to need like 3 people to hold this dress out of the way” I smiled.

“How about one hockey player?”

“Do you think Tanger would mind?” I said with a wink.

“It’s worth asking” he shrugged. I couldn’t help but smile, he knows me too well, it was either Tanger or Max and he didn’t seemed fazed at all by my suggestion. “But if not I can always help you out.”

“Sid, I know we’ve lived together for a while and everything but peeing in front of you on our wedding day just isn’t what I had planned. I’ll get Janie or Al, even Meg.”

“I don’t mind” he said as the song ended. “You’re my wife and this is our baby. I’m going to see a whole lot more than you peeing.”

“Fine” I smile resting my forehead against his with a smile.

By the end of the night I was exhausted. My feet were killing me and I couldn’t wait to get out of my dress and into a pair of my husbands sweats. We were driving a short ways to Sid’s, I mean our home in Halifax staying the night before heading to Europe for a 3 week vacation then we’d be going back to Pittsburgh in time for our 5 month checkup. We’re still trying to decide if we want to know what we’re having, it seems like every other day we change our minds. It would make decorating easier but Sid is pretty set on having a penguins themed nursery. I’m giving him a hard time but the truth is while we’re away for the first 3 weeks Jordan, Kris and Max agreed to help out by painting the room in the Winter Classic themed colors before decking the place out in Penguins memorabilia. It was a surprise for Sid and the least that I could do since he’s always surprising me.

“Baby wake up. . . We’re home” Sid said brushing his fingers along my cheek. He was already standing on the passenger side my door open and his arms around my waist. “I get to carry you over the threshold.”

“Wouldn’t want to seem too egar to lose my virginity, or trip over the threshold thus bringing a slue of bad luck on our marriage” I said as he walked to the door.

“What are you talking about?”

“Those are 2 of many reasons they did this whole thing way back when” I said as he nudged the door open. “That and most of the time they were kidnapping the bride. . .”

“I love you Katie” he said smiling wide.

“Love you too Sidney.”
