A Friendship Regained
Sevie’s POV
Once I was inside the house, I heard the roaring of Jonathan’s truck as it pulled out of the driveway and take off down the street. I noticed the house was quieter than usual so I came to the conclusion that everyone was still out. I headed up the stairs to my room and headed straight to the bathroom to take a relaxing shower. After a good 20 minutes, I stepped out, got dressed in some random pajamas and fell back into bed. I couldn’t help but smile as I just lay there. Ah I can’t believe Jonathan and I are finally together. Gah he’s beyond perfect. Nothing can ruin this birthday for me. Suddenly my phone vibrated on the nightstand where I set it before hitting the showers. I sat up in bed and reached over to get it. I took it off unlocked it and saw the screen light up with the words ‘1 New Text Message: Muscles’. I just sat there looking at the screen, debating on whether or not to open it. I took a deep breath and opened the message.
From: Muscles
Look I know I’m probably the last person you wanna hear from and I understand that but I just really wanna wish you a happy birthday. We may not be on speaking terms, well more like you not speaking to me, but you’re still one of the most important people in my life Sev. Imy.
I couldn’t help but smile at his message. He’s still the same old Zack I see. I sighed and speed dialed 2. I put the phone to my ear as I waited for the other line to answer. Finally someone picked up.
“Muscles?”
Zack’s POV
All night I was pacing back and forth in my room deciding on whether or not I should text or even call Sevie and wish her a happy birthday. She can’t really neglect me if I did that right? I mean I have a reason and it’s to say happy birthday. I groaned and dropped back on my bed. Who the fuck am I kidding? Even if it is her birthday she’ll never answer. She fucking hates me to death. I looked over at my phone that was set on the desk next to my laptop. I took a deep breath and walked over to it. It won’t hurt to try at least. I typed away at the touch screen phone and clicked send after selecting her name from my contacts list. I set the phone back down on the desk and sat back down on my bed. Not even 5 minutes, and my phone rang, causing me to jump a bit. I scrambled over to the phone and looked at the screen once it was in my hand. ‘Sevie’ . I quickly answered the phone before it stopped ringing.
“Muscles?”
“Seh-sevie?”
“Hey there.”
I could tell there was a smile on her face. I could also feel my heart almost jump out of my chest. “H-how are you?”
“I’m good, how about you?”
“I’m good too?”
She giggled. “You’re such a horrible liar. Well only when you wanna be.”
“Heh.”
There was a moment of silence until she spoke up. “Hey Zack?”
“What is it?”
“I’m sorry.”
I just sat there in confusion. Why is she apologizing? “What?”
“I’m sorry I was a horrible friend. I seriously shouldn’t have said those things to you.”
“Hey you shouldn’t be apologizing for anything. If anyone is supposed to apologize it’s me. I was the one who lied to you all those years about Alex.”
“Yeah I know but I mean you must’ve had your reasons. You wouldn’t just do that because you wanted to. This is Alex we’re talking about after all.”
If you only knew why I did it…
“Let’s not talk about him right now.”
“Alright, oh hey how are Jack and Rian?”
“Barakat and Dawson are hmm well they’ve been a little out of it for the past month or so. Not even their girlfriends can cheer them up.”
I heard her gasp. “They have girlfriends?!”
I couldn’t help but chuckle at her reaction. “Yup Jeannie and Cassadee, Jeannie is Jack’s babe and Cassadee is Rian’s.”
“Awh I’m happy for them. What about you?”
“What about me?”
“Do you have a girlfriend?”
“Heh nope, but there is someone I’m crushing on.”
“Awh Zacky that’s so cute. What’s her name? What’s she like? Come on spill we have a lot of catching up to do.”
“Oh um well I’m not telling you her name but I will tell you what she’s like. She is very sweet, incredibly nice, and she’s also very dear to me.”
“Oh my, sounds like you’re crazy about this girl. Make your move Zack, you don’t want her to slip right out of your fingers and let some douche bag take her away from you.”
I smiled. “You’re right.”
“Aren’t I always?”
“Hey let’s not get cocky Sev.”
She giggled. “Sorry Zack. Oh gosh I almost forgot to tell you.”
“You almost forgot to tell me what?”
“I have a boyfriend now.”
Right when I heard those 5 words, I felt my heart shatter. She’s with someone…
“Zack, are you still there?”
“Uh yea I’m here. Uh wow when did you get yourself a boyfriend?”
“Today but we’ve been kinda seeing each other for the past 2 months. We finally made it official today. Oh gosh he’s just perfect Zack like you have no idea. He’s 100 times better than Alex.”
Hearing her talk about this boyfriend of hers like that only broke me more. “I can’t wait to meet the guy. You know how I am, he’s gotta have the best friend’s approval.” It hurt me to even say those words.
“Heh right.”
We ended up talking for another good 30 minutes before we said our goodbyes and goodnights. I put my phone to charge and placed it next to my laptop again. I stripped down to my boxers and crawled into bed. I sighed deeply as I just laid there staring up at the ceiling, with excruciating coming from within my chest. You took too long Merrick… I let out another sigh and closed my eyes, drifting off to sleep.
The next morning I woke up to loud knocking on my apartment door. I stayed in bed in hopes that whoever it was would eventually go away. I was wrong. The knocking just got on my nerves. I groaned and finally managed to get myself out of bed. Seeing as it was my apartment I didn’t feel the need to put on a shirt. I walked over to the front door and opened it.
“What are you guys doing here?”
Jack shrugged as he and Rian made their way in leaving me to close the door behind them. “Just thought we could hangout today. Alex is busy with Lisa so it’s just the 3 of us.”
“When is Alex not with her, that chick has him whipped. I miss Sev.” Rian said as he took a seat next to Jack on the sofa, already flipping through channels on the television.
“I actually talked to her last night.” I said walking back into my room to put on a pair of shorts and t-shirt. Jack and Rian ran into my room just as I finished putting on my shorts and in the middle of pulling the shirt over my head.
“You called her?” Jack asked.
“And she talked to you?” Rian asked.
“Uh no and yes. Let’s just go to the living room.”
They nodded and we all made our way back. They sat on the long couch while I sat right across from them.
“How is she? Is she ok? Nothing’s bad happened right? How did she spend her birthday yesterday?” Rian asked.
“Damn it Rian shut up!”
Rian glared at Jack. “Well excuse me but I haven’t heard from her in months.”
“Well neither have I, now will you let Zack tell us what happened?”
They both looked away from each other and looked at me. I sighed.
“Well to answer all of Rian’s questions; she’s doing great, yes, everything is fine, and she spent it with the band.”
I saw Rian give out a sigh of relief. Jack just rolled his eyes. “Anyway, how did you guys end up talking?”
“Well I texted her saying happy birthday. Not even 5 minutes later she called me.”
“Did she yell at you?”
I shook my head. “Not at all. At first there was a lot of silence but as the call progressed, it was like what happened 2 months ago never really happened you know what I mean?”
“So that topic never came up?” Rian asked.
“It did. She apologized for how things went down.”
“Why the hell did she apologize? She didn’t do anything wrong.”
“I know that. I told her that all the apologizing should be coming from me, not her. She forgave me though and she figured that I had my reasons for doing what I did.”
“Did she find out why exactly?” Jack asked
I sighed and shook my head. “No she didn’t. Anyway though, she asked about you guys.”
Jack and Rian’s eyes instantly lit up. I couldn’t help but smile.
“She asked how you guys were.”
“What did you tell her?” Rian asked.
“I told her that you two were pretty much miserable and that not even your girlfriends could make things better.”
“We weren’t miserable Merrick!”
I just chuckled at both of their reactions. “Whatever you say guys. She’s very happy for you both by the way.”
Jack chuckled. “That’s our little Claire.”
Rian smiled. “What else did she say or ask?”
“Well she asked me if I had a girlfriend. I told her no…”
“So you told her that you’re were in love with her right?” Jack asked.
I shook my head.
“What the fuck Zack, why didn’t you tell her? You’ve liked her since what high school right? If you don’t tell her someone else is gonna take her away from you.”
“Correction, I’ve liked her since we were in diapers. Plus, someone already took her from me Jack.”
“Are you saying she met someone?”
I nodded.
“When did this happen?” Rian asked.
“Well from what she told me, she met the guy 2 months ago, they’ve been dating that long but just yesterday they made it official.”
“Oh wow. Damn Zack, I’m sorry dude. But I mean if she’s happy then that’s all that matters. She won’t have to be thinking about Alex and what he did anymore.”
I smiled at Jack. “Nah don’t worry about it. I’ll be fine and yea you’re right.”
Suddenly out of nowhere Jack’s phone rang. He took it out of his pocket and checked who it was. “It’s Flyzik.” He got up off the couch and stepped outside to answer the call, leaving me sitting in the living room with Rian.
“So what are you gonna do?”
“What am I gonna do about what?”
“About Claire of course, I mean you can’t just give up just like that.”
I sighed. “Dude there’s not much I can do, she lives in Texas now and by the way she talked about this boyfriend of hers she’s really happy. Like Jack said, if she’s truly happy with this guy she’s with, then that’s all that matters. As her best friend, I’m really happy for her.”
“You’re a horrible liar.”
“Heh, so I’ve been told.”
“Yea as her best friend you should be happy for her but as a guy that’s secretly loved her forever, how do you feel?”
As I was about to answer Rian’s question, the front door opened and Jack made his way back into the living room.
“So what did Flyzik want?”
“He just said to meet up at the venue soon.”
“It’s almost noon though, why so soon?” Rian asked.
Jack shrugged. “Who knows, let’s go get some chow before heading over there.”
“Let me just take a shower then. I may look good but I don’t smell good.”
“Who the fuck said you looked good dude?” Jack laughed.
“Fuck off Barakat.”
I got up off the couch and headed over to my room for a quick 10 minute shower before finally getting dressed and heading out with Rian and Jack.
