Sweet Home Arizona.

Two.

After getting grilled about abruptly leaving the table to talk on the phone, my brunch date was now over. I hurried back to the penthouse and started packing my stuff. I couldn’t believe John would send the papers back without signing them. I knew he was stupid but I didn’t think he was that stupid.
“Macy where are you?” I walked out of the closet and dropped the rest of my clothes on the bed. Luke came in seconds later, looking very confused. “Did you change your mind about Vegas?” I shook my head no.
“I have to go to Arizona for a few days to get something straightened out. I’ll be back on Monday babe.” I kissed his lips and walked into the bathroom. “What’s in Arizona?” Luke had no idea about my past. I told him my parents were living in Greece enjoying their retirement. That I was born and raised in South Florida. And that he was the only guy I’ve ever loved. I had to tell him all these lies because if I told him the truth, he probably wouldn’t want to be with me. It was the most shallow thing I’ve ever done in my life.
“Uh what’s in Arizona.” Wow way to hold yourself together Macy. “Uh my good friend from high school Garrett is coming home from the uh um military. Yeah their having a big massive party for him.” Luke just nodded his head and placed himself on the bed. I couldn’t believe I just told a lie like that; my parents would be real proud. “Well you would have let me know sooner babe. I could have tagged along and met all your friends.” I gave him a weak smile. “I know babe and I’m sorry. I’m sure the gang would have loved to meet you.” I zipped up my suitcase and dragged it over to the door. “Do you want to escort me to the airport?” He stood up from his spot on the bed and nodded. “I would love to babe.” He grabbed my suitcase and followed me out the door. I really did feel bad about leaving him but I didn’t want him to be caught up in John drama.
The ride to the airport was full of sweet kisses and I love you’s. I could tell Luke was really going to miss me. The good thing about this trip was that it was going to be short and sweet; I hope.
“Flight 213 to Phoenix is now boarding at gate 8. Flight 213 to phoenix is now boarding at gate 8.” I looked around at all the people saying goodbye or greeting each other. I turned and looked at Luke, “I’m going to miss you but I’ll call you everyday.” He pecked my lips and placed his forehead against mine. “I’ll be waiting babe.” We kissed again for the final time. I made my way to the gate, trying not to look back at him.
“Have a good flight miss.” I thanked the attendant and gave Luke one last wave.
Arizona here I come.
I stepped off the airplane and into the hot Phoenix air. New York could get hot but Phoenix was the icing on the cake. I loved the city but Arizona would always be my favorite, no matter what.
I walked through the airport and over to the rent a car desk. I didn’t really want to call anyone, considering no one knew that I was even coming. Plus I really wanted to surprise John by just sporadically showing up.
After about 20 minutes of trying to make sure all of my information was correct, I pulled out of the parking lot. I still had a very vague memory of where John lived, but he could have moved. I pulled down the old familiar street, passing familiar houses, and the familiar people that lived there. It was just like I remembered from 4 years ago. Seconds later, my car found itself parked in front of the beautiful house we shared. It was the same way it was when I left. I had to say a little prayer to myself and take a few deep breaths before I opened the car door. I stepped onto the blacktop and made my way to the front door. There wasn’t any cars in the driveway, but they could have been in the garage. I took a couple more deep breaths and knocked on the door. I don’t know why I was so nervous, I mean it was just John. I waited a couple seconds before knocking again; no answer. God only knows where that boy was and he was definitely wasting my time right now. I turned around and stomped back to my car. I didn’t know where I was going to go. I mean I could visit my parents and stuff but, no that was a bad idea. I was about to turn on my car, when I saw a black BMW pull into his drive. Seconds later, John climbed out of the car. My heart sped up when I saw him. The last time I saw him, he had a mullet and was just a bag of bones. Now, his hair was cut short and he was way more muscular. He was looking mighty fine. Wait what am I saying? I can’t be crushing on my ex- well my soon to be ex husband. John walked up to his door and quickly unlocked it. Now was the time to do what I came here to do. If I did it now, I would be on the next flight back to the city. I stepped out of my car and slowly walked back to the housel; papers in hand. I placed my fist on the door and tried to mentally prepare myself for what was about to go down. I heard footsteps coming closer and closer; this was it. Seconds later John opened the door. His face was happy but then it turned to shocked and angry.
“Hi John, how are you doing? Mind if I come in?” I pushed past him and into the house.
The inside was just like I had left it 4 years ago. I was amazed that he hadn’t changed it.
“Mason what the fuck are you doing here?” I placed the papers on the table and turned around to look at him. “Now is that anyway to greet your wife?” He ran his hand through his hair and let out a laugh.
“Why didn’t you sign the damn papers John. We’ve been going through this for almost 3 years, I think it’s time for it to end.” He slammed the door shut and walked away from me. I let out a sigh and followed him into the kitchen. “Why won’t you sign them John. Do you know how much it cost me to keep sending these back to you? It’s a lot; trust me.” He opened the refrigerator and took out a beer.
“I just never feel like signing them, way to busy.”
“Busy doing what John; drinking?” He took a huge sip out of the bottle, his eyes still connected with mine.
“You’re such a joy to be around Mason. So did Mr. Abercrombie come with you too?” I rolled my eyes.
“No Luke didn’t come with me. He had to stay back in New York for work.”
“Where does he work?”
“Wall Street; why?” John just shook his head.
“He’s smart enough to work on Wall Street?”
“Yes he is.” He finished his beer and walked out of the kitchen. This was not going the way I wanted it to. I came here to get him to sigh the papers, but he was playing 20 questions. I followed him back out into the living room and saw he was now lounging on the couch. He was acting like nothing was going on.
“John can you please just sign the papers. I will be out of Arizona by tonight and you will never see me again.” John looked up at me and smirked. “Is that a promise?” I nodded my head and passed him the papers and a pen. He took them out of my hand and was about to place his signature but no.
“I have to ask you a question before I do this?” Of course he did.
“What?” He threw the pen onto the table and looked at me.
‘When we got married did you think we would be together forever?” I was taken back by his question.
“Well, yeah. I loved you with all my heart John but we just couldn’t work out.”
“Why didn’t we work out?”
“John you know why we didn’t work so don’t ask dumb questions.” I was getting ticked off now.
“DO you think Abercrombie will be a better husband than I was?” I looked into his green eyes and nodded my head. “He’ll be a lot better than you’ll ever be.” I could tell that my words kind of pierced him. He looked at his watch and his face started to light up. “Listen I have to go. I’m supposed to meet this sexy little vixen tonight at her place.” I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. He walked out of the room and up the stairs. I picked up the divorce packet and stomped my way up the stairs. When I entered our room, I noticed John was now shirtless. My heart started to beat faster as I tried not to look at him. I mean Luke was ripped and in very good shape, but John was sexy just by being skinny. I also noticed he had gotten 3 new tattoos since we were last together.
“John I really need you to sign the papers.”
“Mason chill the fuck out. I’ll sign them when I get back, just leave them on the table. By the way, have you seen your parents?”
“No and I don’t plan on it either.” He just shook his head and began to smirk. His smirk was never a real good sign. “Maybe you should pay them a visit. Better yet I’ll call your daddy right now and let him know you’re in town.” He picked up his phone and began to dial the numbers. I ran towards him and tried to take the phone away, but that sure didn’t work.
“Hey Mr. King, it’s John.” I could hear my dad’s voice on the other end but I couldn’t tell what he was saying. “The reason why I’m calling is because Mason is at my house right now.” He gave me a smirk and continued listening to my dad. For some odd reason, John and my dad were extremely close. “No I promise this is not a joke. Sure I’ll bring her over right now.” I started to quickly walk away but John caught up with me. “Sure thing Mr. King.” He hung up the phone and placed it in the pocket of his jeans.
“You know I pretty much hate you right now.”
“I know isn’t it great? Oh and your dad is on his way here right now.” I was seconds away from punching him square in the face. I couldn’t believe he would do this too me. All I wanted him to do was to sign the damn papers, but he just had to bring my parents into it.
“John why do you have to be such a stubborn ass all the time?
“Mason why do you have to be so difficult to be with all the time?”
“I’m the one who is difficult to be with; me? Last time I checked you were the one who was difficult to be around, not me.
“Well at least I’m not a spoiled brat and have everything handed to me on a silver platter.”
“Well you know what John, at least I won’t be on some reality show for dried up rock stars. Do you know what the show is called, let me give you a hint. It’s called CELEBRITY REHAB!” John just let out a laugh and ran his fingers through his hair.
“Macy I thought when you left for New York it would make you a better person. All its really is make you a bigger bitch than you ALREADY WERE!” I threw the papers and a pen to the ground and stomped over to John. “Don’t you ever call me that again John. I was trying to be a nice person but of course you make me turn this way. I’m so fucking glad that we broke up, I don’t even know what the hell I saw in you.” My finger was still pointed in his face. He just looked down at me with his usual facial expression; that damn smirk. “Are you done yet?” I rolled my eyes and turned around.
“Why did I even agree to marry you? Was I drunk or stoned or something?”
“You agreed because we loved each other. We wanted to spend the rest of our lives with one another. After what went on with Paisley, that all changed.” Before I could respond, a knock came from John’s front door.
“That’s probably your dad.” John walked over to the door, and sure enough it was. My dad shook hands with John and entered the house. He looked so different from the last time I had seen him, but again that was 4 years ago.
“Hey baby girl.” He engulfed me in his arms and gave me a bear hug. I couldn’t help but melt in his arms, he was my dad after all. “I’ve missed you so much mace.”
“I missed you too dad.” I chocked out.
“Let’s get you home, okay.” I nodded my head and followed him out the door.
My dad said a few words to John before walking back out the door.
“I’ll have the papers for you tomorrow.” I looked over at John and nodded my head.
“Sounds good.” if only I knew then that tomorrow would be a lie.
