Vain Redemption

The Envelope

I hadn’t dared opening the envelope; it lay closed upon my study after a night of pure confusion and deprivation of sleep. I couldn’t help but think there was something amiss. Why had they come to me? Surely they could have gone to someone more recognized than I. I wasn’t sure whether I would favor the contents of that letter. The man who delivered it had an unfriendly air, and I couldn’t help but feel if I directed one bad look to him I’d be six feet under in a matter of seconds. I walked over and grabbed the sealed envelope, lighting the lantern beside it. I opened the waxed sealed letter; it read:

Dear Mr. Grand,

The council has summoned you to investigate the outflow of council information. There is suspect of an infiltrator neighboring us; you are to find the culprit immediately so the necessary actions can be prosecuted. You are expected at the manor tomorrow morning at eight o’clock. It is asked that you keep secrecy; we needn’t anyone finding out.

With Regards,
The Minister of Tera

The note was vague, but it made it's point clear. I now understood the entire hush behind this letter. For a long time a mysterious air had hung in the city; it was tense. Everyone watched their backs constantly in consequence of many people not trusting each other anymore. There had been many rumors and even several attempts to sabotage the council, and because of that the council had decided to react mercilessly to any broken rules. The attacks they'd had before were of no coincidence, it had been coming from the same source. If there was an infiltrator close to them I suspected it would be the same people who would have tried sabotaging them. I found it odd that they were barely taking action now in trying to find the suspect, but better late than never.

After having gotten ready I walked hastily through the foggy streets of Tera not wanting to be late. I didn’t want to have an unfriendly encounter with the man who had delivered the letter. You didn’t want to be on the bad side of the council, they controlled you and could do anything with you if they pleased; they weren’t one to mess with.

I hurried my pace and wondering all the way to the manor of what awaited me there, I certainly didn't know that this meeting would change my life forever.
