Sequel: Close Yet Far

Anything but Ordinary

The Sane Car

(Kay’s POV)

I had managed to pry X-tina from me before turning to say hi to our ‘secret’ weapon, Eva. She’d help us keep Clubby under control.

“Hey Eva!” I said excitedly before giving her a huge hug. “How was the flight?”

“Long.” The Englishwoman said with a sigh. “But definitely worth it. I can’t believe we are finally together for once.”

My eyes drifted to where X-tina, Heather and Meg were talking quietly about something that probably wouldn’t end up good for any of us. Shaking my head, I responded to Eva’s statement. “I’m not sure if all of us together is a particularly good idea.”

She followed my gaze to the trio of bad intentions and laughed. “I’m sure they are harmless, Kay.”

I gave Eva a bewildered look. “Harmless? Oh you poor thing… you just jinxed yourself.”

“What do you mean?” She asked confused. Eva wasn’t from this country and she didn’t really know my friends… she was in for it.

“Eva!” The trio called out as they rushed the English girl. “We need to add you to our club.”

“Your club?” She asked in a scared voice. Her wide eyes searched for escape. There was none.

Clubby grabbed her one hand while Meg grabbed the other.

“I promise. It won’t hurt… much.” X-tina said as they led the poor girl away from me. I couldn’t save her… once the trio got a hold of you, you were done for.

Aimee came from her parents’ quiet house; they were both at work thankfully, with something in her hands.

“What is that?” I called out as she returned to the cars. Once I got a good look at the items in her grip, I smiled. “Are you sure those are a good idea? I mean, Ames… Clubby?”

“I thought about that. It’s why I’ve decided she’s out of my car. If Meg and X-tina want to come, then they take Clubby with them.” Aimee handed me a walkie talkie. “Channel 1 is the one Clubby is going to have free reign over. So whenever we need a quiet moment, Channel 4 is where you meet me.”

I laughed, but said nothing. Of course Aimee had thought about this. She walked off to give Clubby and her crew the walkie talkie and their instructions, which none of them would follow. I decided to get my car mates together so we could head out as soon as trio was taken care of.

My car was dubbed the ‘sane’ car. I guess with who we had acquired on this trip this was a good distinction. I had Kelly and Amid in my car and we were clearly the most sane out of our group of nine. The worst car had to have been Christina’s car which included Meg and Clubby. I was so thankful I wasn’t apart of that. Aimee had the slightly crazy yet slightly normal car of her, Eva and Jaimie. I could guarantee a few people would be switching cars during the trip down yet it was undetermined who that would be.

The walkie talkie in my car made a strange buzzing sound as we pulled out of Aimee’s driveway.

“Yeah?” I spoke into channel 4. Aimee needing a quiet moment already didn’t spell well for the four hour long trip ahead of us.

“I’m making sure the walkies work before we get too far.” Aimee’s voice replied over the static. “Can you hear me?”

“Perfectly clear. You?”

“Clear as a bell. I’ll contact when we get close to the interstate. Be prepared for switching to Channel Clubby. She’s already screaming over it.” Aimee warned before her voice disappeared. She must have switched over.

Once switched to Channel 1, I was surprised to find it silent for the moment. I glanced in the rearview mirror to see the Crazy car following me perhaps a little too close for comfort. I knew telling them to slow down or back off wouldn’t work so I did the only thing I could think of. I sped up. Ok, maybe it wasn’t the best idea, but X-tina had started the drive and she was a terrible driver.

Pulling onto the main highway that would lead us to the interstate, the sound of static came over the channel followed by Clubby singing her favorite song. The sound of the walkie talkie turning on scared me. I nearly ran the car off of the road due to my surprise.

Amid yelped in terror. Kelly turned her eyes to the walkie talkie with a frown on her face.

“What the hell is she doing?” Amid asked from the back seat.

“She thinks she’s Jack Sparrow.” I muttered under my breath, but I knew they both heard me because neither said another word as Clubby’s voice floated through the silent car.

“Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me. We pillage plunder, we rifle and loot. Drink up me 'earties, yo ho. We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot. Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.”

The walkie talkie clicked as I turned it off. Kelly looked at me in surprise and I smiled wryly at her.

“I’ll turn it on when we get closer to coffee.”

Amid let out his breath. “Thank God. I couldn’t take another second of that horrible singing.”

A smile spread onto my face before I could stop it. Maybe this trip would be worth it after all. Seeing Amid and Clubby battle it out should be worth all of the annoyances.
