Times Are Changing

Fights and out.

Working as a waitress wasn't my ideal job, especially in this run down want to be Denny's. However it was a job, and at least paid the bills. The guys were annoying, and the elder women that came here were sweet. So it was a half and half on negatives and positives that kept me going with a smile. You could only imagine how happy I was to actually leave and head to my mom's house to pick up my little guy as well.

"So you both are coming right?" She asked as soon as I walked in the front door.

"Yes mom," I answered with a smile and lifted Dominic up.
"We are."

"Good," she replied then let out a deep breath.

"What's wrong?" I question, full of concern.

"I just wish it was just you and Dominic," she confessed, looking at her hands.
"I don't feel like Nathan really wants to come along and be apart of this family."

"Oh mom," I sighed, chewing on the inside of my lip.
"I'm sure he does."

"We shall see," she mumbled then gave me a hug.
"Well I love you."

"I love you too," I say in her hair. We broke apart, and Dominic kissed her cheek.

"Lah you!" he squealed, clapping his hands together.

"I love you too," my mom stated and kissed his forehead.
"Drive safely."

"Always do," I assure then adjusted him further up my hip. My mom smiled at me as I left, then got inside my car and drove off. I went back to the apartment, got out and held Dominic in my arms as I unlocked the door.

"Need any help ma'am?" Some random guy creepily inquired.

"No thanks," I politely replied, in hopes he'd walk off.

"I can hold the little guy for you," he offered, licking his lips and looking me over.
"Or maybe unlock the door for you, I'm good at that sort of thing, don't even need the key."

"No thanks," I repeated a little more aggressively.

"Hey no need to be so feisty, though that is attractive," he chuckled. I turned around and stared at him.

"I have a son to take care of, alright? I'm tired, I just got off work, and I'm fucking dealing with some shit. I don't want any help, I appreciate it, I tried to say it politely. Now step off," I demanded. He stared at me with some sort of shock, probably questioning my sanity.

"It's not safe around here at night," he ignored my comments. I opened the door put Dominic inside, and turned around.

"Trust me, I know and that's what guns are for," I reply and looked him over. I hoped Dominic would go straight to the bean bag since he loves jumping on that as I prepared myself for some battle. The guy took a step forward so I pulled my pocket knife out and opened it.

"I was just making sure you can handle yourself, good night," he stated while shifting his eyes from me to the knife. I am a mother bear, no one will fuck with me when I have my child. I went inside, and locked the door, even the chain lock.

"I can't believe that," I mumbled and turned around. Thankfully Dominic grabbed a blanket, and laid on the bean bag chair. I smiled at him as his eyes were slowly closing. I turned on our small little TV and pushed the play button on my VHS player. No way was I going to bed any time soon until Nathan comes home. So I sat next to Dominic with the pocket knife next to me and watched the movie.

A few hours pass and finally Nathan unlocks the doors, then pounds on the front door after he opens it and notices the chain lock is locked.

"Monique!" He screamed, I quickly got up and opened it; embracing him in a grateful hug.

"Nathan!" I cried out.

"What happened?" He sighed, moving me further into the apartment then locked the door as I had done.

"Some creepy ass motherfucking child molesting looking creeper was creepin on Dominic and I. Literally asked me if he could hold Dominic for me, or open my door that he doesn't even need a key, like what the fuck? I'm done with this place, Nathan. We need to find some where else," I explained, wiping my face.

"I like it here though," he sighed.

"Really?" I growled, eying him down.

"No, but I was thinking about moving in with my mom," he abruptly broke the news. I took in a deep breath and licked my lips.

"So does this mean..." I paused, afraid of the answer. "We're going back there?"

"We?" He whispered, obviously not capable of doing what he wants to do which is tell me we're splitting up.

"Are you...still going with us on that week vacation?" I choke out, glancing at Dominic's sleeping frame. Nathan sighed and I knew what that had meant. "Alright then, okay."

"Monique," he whispered. I simply shook my head as I continued to stare at Dominic.

"It's okay," I assure and cleared my throat.
"I'll see you around."

"What?" He quietly replied. I tightly closed my eyes and walked into the room. I grabbed a suit case, packed a lot of my clothes and started grabbing Dominic's bag for his suit case. "Stop."

"No," I reply continuing.

"Stop!" He yelled and I shook my head, zipping up the one suit case.

"Why?!" I screamed, slamming the bag on the floor.
"Why the fuck should I stop?!"

"Because you don't have to leave," he assured. At which I felt a little at ease.
"I'll leave." Then the mood changed into a pissed off one again.
"Dominic doesn't need this."

"He doesn't even know, Nathan. Quit acting like you care about him," I begged and continued to finish packing. Nathan grabbed my arm and I shoved him away, not even looking at him.

"How dare you say I don't care about him?" He hissed, then tried grabbing me again. But I shoved him away and put my finger up.

"Stop, now. Understand?" I spat, looking him over and walked past him to get Dominic.

"Don't leave with him," he dared to demand that of me. My mouth opened a little as I gaped at him, how dare he?

"Good night," I muttered bending over to get him, but Nathan got in the way.
"What the fuck are you doing?"

"I asked you not to leave with him," he repeated.

"You never asked you demanded," I reminded and let out a deep breath.
"I'll see you tomorrow then or something."

"Monique," he said my name as if it were a warning of some sort.

"I'm not playing these fucking games, Nate. I am taking my son," I spat then shoved him so hard he actually fell over. Shall I repeat? I am a mother bear, no one gets in the way of me and my son. I picked Dominic up, whom stirred but didn't wake. "Now I will talk to you tomorrow if you like, but right now. No."

"Get out," he calmly growled from the floor. His eyes softened when they looked at Dominic, then hardened when he stared at me. I left the apartment, putting Dominic in his little car seat and dropped my suit cases on the floor by accident in the process. I strapped him in and tossed the luggage in the front seat before getting in and driving off. I showed up to my mom's house, luggage on my shoulders, Dominic in my arms and tears falling down my face uncontrollably.

"Monique?" she furrowed her brows as she opened the door, immediately grabbing Dominic.

"Momma," I cried out, coming inside. "He, he."

"Shh," she hushed, taking Dominic into my room. He placed him in bed then came out to me.

"Mommy," I cried again.

"Monique, just go to bed and we'll talk about this in the morning okay? Get some sleep, Hun." With that she brushed some of my hair behind my ear, kissed my cheek and pulled me into a hug. I hugged back, and didn't want to let her go. Once she left I went to my old room and bit my lip. My mom and I can have such a hate/love relationship, but I swear she is my rock, my life.
