If I Was Your Boyfriend

seventy-three.

‘Chrissy, they’ll be here any minute.’ My mom calls from downstairs.

‘Just a second!’ I call back raking my fingers through my hair. Justin dropped me off not too long ago so he could go back to the apartment and get ready for dinner. My mom was throwing a random dinner tonight just to catch up with everyone. Justin’s mom and her new boyfriend would be joining us too.

On my way with Rocky now – Justin.

See you soon – Chrissy.

Sure Justin was late but he only lived close to fifteen minutes away so it wouldn’t take him that long to get here. Just then the doorbell rings that must be Pattie and her boyfriend. ‘Chrissy!’ my mom calls once again before I hear the door open. I glance at myself in the long mirror before me. I decided to go with a dress that I rarely ever wore. Just a simple blue. Before I reach the bottom of the stairs I hear Pattie’s voice. ‘Finally.’ My mom laughs once I join everyone in the living room.

‘Sorry.’ I say with a small smile, ‘Justin is on his way now.’

‘Of course the teenagers would be the ones who aren’t on time.’ Jeff laughs as well.

‘It’s fine. We should be used to it by now.’ Pattie says warmly, ‘Chrissy I haven’t seen you in so long. You’re absolutely beautiful. How are you?’ she pulls me in for a hug while asking a series of questions.

‘Everything’s great, thank you.’

‘Good, good. This is my boyfriend, Roman.’ She smiles proudly. I look up at the big muscular man in front of me. He had full dark hair, and a little bit of a scruff coming in. Compared to him Pattie looked so tiny. Pattie and my mom talk in the kitchen about the engagement while Jeff and Ramon talked about last night’s game.

Ding Dong

I sigh with relief, now that I have someone to talk to for myself. I let Justin in with Rocky who jumps against my legs. ‘You look beautiful.’ Justin pulls me in for a hug. He was dressed in a white button down shirt, black cutoff shorts, and pair of black vans. ‘Hey Jeff. Hey Roman.’ He walks over and shakes their hand.

‘How are you?’ Jeff wonders.

‘Good, it’s all good.’

‘We’re going to check on dinner.’ I say while reaching for Justin.

‘Is that dress new?’

‘No, you’ve just never seen it before.’ I reply taking his hand walking towards the kitchen.

‘Well I definitely like it.’ I could see the smile on his face without even turning around. ‘A lot.’

‘Well nice of you to join us son.’ Pattie teases

‘Hi momma.’ Justin kisses her cheek pulling her in for a hug, then hugs my mom as well. ‘How are you ladies?’

‘Good, thanks. Dinner’s just about ready.’

‘It smells amazing whatever it is.’ Justin breathes in and out leaning against the counter.

‘You two go set the table.’ Pattie points to the stack of plates waiting to be placed. I grab all the utensils while Justin grabs the plates and cups.

‘So, are we telling them?’ Justin inquires in a hushed whisper.

‘Are you?’

‘I was hoping you would.’ He lightly chuckles but completely serious.

‘Justin.’ I whine leaning against his arm, ‘it was your idea.’

‘Which you went along with.’ He fights back teasingly.

‘Justin.’ I repeat looking up at him.

Justin’s Point of View

As I’m setting the table Chrissy wraps her arms around me and looks up at me with the cutest puppy dog face, ‘oh no. That’s not going to work.’ She actually wants me to tell everyone about our plan to share the apartment. She blinks several times pouting. ‘Chrissy, I am not going to fall fo-…’

‘Please.’ She whispers tightening her grip.

‘You owe me.’ I give in swallowing, hard. She smiles victoriously hugging me.

What can I say? I’m a sucker for her.

‘Time to eat.’ Chrissy’s mom and mine set all the food out on the long wooden table. I realized what she was cooking was chicken and it smelled incredible. Across from me is Ramon on beside me was Chris. I take two pieces of chicken and sneak a piece down to Rocky even though he cleared the dog food from his dish before we got here. For the first half of dinner we talked about Chrissy’s promo trip and the wedding plans.

Buzz Buzz

I pull my phone out of my pocket then study the screen.

New iMessage: My baby

Anytime now ;p – Chrissy.

I place my hand on her thigh as I clear my throat, ‘guys.’ I pause, ‘Chrissy and I were thinking about sharing my place together and making it our place.’ At this point all eyes were on us.

‘What?’ my mom asks first.

‘Justin and I want to move in together.’ Chrissy chimes in and I’m thankful she did.

‘Are you serious?’ Chrissy’s mom’s eyes go from Chrissy to me and back again.

‘We’ve been talking about it and it’s something we want to do.’ I say in the politest way possible.

She paces back and forth in front of me. ‘We should've went to Taco Bell.’ she laughs. I grab her waist and stop her movements.

‘I told you.’

‘What if this, us moving in together doesn't happen?’

‘Maybe it won't happen today but it will happen one day.’ I take my fingers and lift her chin forcing her to look at me, ‘i don't want you to worry okay?’

‘Okay.’

‘Chrissy. Justin.’ Chrissy mom stands in the door of the backyard, ‘could you come back in?’

‘Let’s go baby.’ I look into her eyes stroking her cheeks with my thumbs, ‘remember. If not today, someday. I promise.’ I leave a kiss on her forehead before heading back into the house.

Chrissy’s Point of View

I grab Justin’s hand as I step through the backdoor. Everyone was still sitting at the kitchen table as they were earlier. I sit beside Justin at the table holding his hand for comfort. ‘We feel that you both are becoming adults as much as we don’t want to admit it.’ Pattie starts, ‘you’ve proven yourselves this far and have shown how trust-worthy you are.’

‘So we’re trusting you on this too.’ My mom concludes. I could see the nervousness in her face. ‘As hard as it is, you’re growing up.’

‘Be careful guys.’ Pattie says. I stand up and wrap my arms around my mom.

‘I love you.’

‘I love you Chrissy. My little girl isn’t so little anymore.’

‘I’ll always be your little girl mom.’

Justin lifts another box up and places in the back of his Range Rover. ‘How many more?’

‘I think that’s everything.’ I look at my car which was already filled with mainly clothes. I didn’t have any furniture or anything besides my old furniture from my old bedroom which would stay there since Justin already had furniture. ‘Alright, I’ll see you at the apartment.’ Justin says as he closes all the doors to the car. I say goodbye to my mom and Jeff one last time before getting into my car and driving to our apartment.

Our apartment.

The words sound odd falling from my lips.

Justin and I share an apartment now.

‘Finally! My baby’s back.’ Justin is waiting on the steps as I get out of my car, ‘we’ll unpack everything later. Right now just come here.’ He extends his arm to me. I walk up the stairs wrapping my arms around his neck.

‘I can’t believe we’re doing this.’ I giggle as he lifts me in the air.

‘You’re happy right?’ he wonders as he carries me through the living room.

‘Beyond happy.’ He clumsily climbs the steps with me still in his arms. ‘Justin!’ I laugh clinging onto his shirt. Rocky is now on high-alert watching us as we go up the stairs. ‘Do not drop me.’

‘What like this?’ he stumbles over the step yet hanging on to me.

‘Justin!’ I squirm to get out of his arms once he’s in the hallway. ‘Stop.’

‘Not yet.’ He goes into the room and carefully lays me down on the bed. ‘Welcome home.’ he presses his lips to mine slipping his fingers through mine.
