In Your Eyes

02.

It didn’t take longer than five minutes for Willa to finish scavenging through the clusters of trees and find the narrow pathway that would lead her back to town. Her feet smacked loudly against the speckled dim grey pavement. As she raised her head to meet the sky, she quickly noticed the clouds that had spread in the sky were now blanketed over the sun, like a snow white duvet tightly spanning over a sky blue bed. If she didn’t already have a motive in mind to hurry on home, the swiftly-changing weather proved to be another good reason her rush. Checking her watch, she realized with disheartened feelings that the chances of her beating her mother home had grown from slim to none in under ten minutes.

It wasn’t another minute until she completely left the woods behind and was greeted by the sight of a pretty meadow, where the grass grew tall and the trees were few and sporadically placed. It was a large area, several acres wide, but it was surrounded by town roads that wouldn’t take very long to reach if she sprinted. Willa was starting to regret not joining the track and field team in middle school, which would’ve proved to be a huge advantage to her at the moment. However, she convinced herself not to dwell on that fact, because that fact in particular wasn’t the one sending her home.

Seemingly out of nowhere, a warm and rough hand grasped her right arm tightly. Willa released a shrill, high-pitched shriek that caused her assailant to slap another hand over her mouth and drag her towards one of the shorter trees rooted beneath the surface of the meadow. She couldn’t turn her head around and whoever her attacker was, they were strong and had Willa firmly pressed against the tree, her back against their front.

She could feel that they were much taller than her, and certainly unyielding. Willa was quickly beginning to regret sneaking out of the house. While she didn’t deserve whatever she presumed was about to happen to her, it was karma’s way of telling her that she shouldn’t have been sneaking off behind her parents’ backs and betraying their trust. Although she didn’t believe she deserved to be kept captive, she knew she deserved some sort of punishment. She just didn’t expect it to come in the form of an attacker.

Willa tried to tell her aggressor to let go of her, but her voice was muffled against the rough surface of their hand. Everything about her accoster felt incredibly masculine to her, which only allowed her worries to reach a brand new peak. A shiver ran down her spine and the hairs on her neck stood ramrod straight; she could feel her attacker’s head lean down and a pair of lips at her right ear. She closed her eyes, trying to block out everything around her. This is it. I’m not going back home.

“Stop screaming and I’ll let you go.”

Immediately, she silenced herself, not realizing that the words she’d been trying to release were still just screeches of fear and revulsion. Willa was now entirely certain that her assailant was a male, and a slightly less terrifying one at that. The words rolling smoothly off his tongue were like velvet, and not at all what she’d expected. She’d anticipated a callous, wretched-sounding voice making rough demands and succeeding in frightening her. He was a lot younger than she thought she would encounter, but her assumptions were based upon what she could take in without her sight. Her eyes were still very much trained on the uneven edges of the bark.

The hands which had bound Willa to the tree now released her, and she whirled around to face her attacker. One of the things she noted was that he was too close for comfort, and another was that he couldn’t be much older than her. The third thing she realized was that he had an unbelievably attractive physique, but the fear swimming inside of her veins was still omnipresent. She allowed herself to breathe, but the hardness in her light eyes had yet to disappear. The discomfort settled in her stomach, where a swarm of frightened wasps stung angrily in their wake.

“What do you want from me?”

Initially, he looked taken aback, until Willa presumed he remembered that he had been the one to grab her and that he had been the one to have her situated so she was pinned flush against the tree without her consent. She was taking a shot in the dark and making the inference that he was not too bright of a human being, especially if he thought that snatching her rather than yelling after her or something of that nature would be the best way to capture her attention. Unless, of course, he had malicious intentions that involved shaking and breaking her to the point of no return, though she hoped that she was overreacting and that wasn’t the case. Unfortunately, she honestly couldn’t come up with any other remotely reasonable theories behind his horrifying actions.

“Nothing, I just…I noticed you rushing and all. Do you need to get somewhere or something? I can drive you wherever if you want.”

Willa was completely taken by surprise, and she was sure her shock was etched on her face. He was offering her a ride? Although he didn’t look too much older than her, she wasn’t exactly sure if she could trust him. She didn’t even know him, and her first impression of him certainly wasn’t a favorable one. What was she supposed to do? On the other hand, she’d already wasted plenty of time and there was no way on this earth that she would beat her mother home even if she did dash through the streets with the excessive vigor of the Energizer bunny. It was a tempting offer, despite the dangers that came with it.

Narrowing her eyes, the pale girl looked him dead in the eye, not entirely convinced of his motives. He wasn’t someone to be trusted, at least not in her eyes. What sane, trustworthy person would attack someone—much less a complete stranger—from behind just to offer them a ride? It had the word ‘suspicious’ written all over it, and Willa didn’t like it. Did he really expect her to just jump in his car and let him lead her to her house, where she lived? Not only did it have ‘suspicious’ scribbled all over it, but she could easily add ‘ridiculous’, ‘delusional’, and ‘stupid’ to the list as well.

“I haven’t seen you around before. How do I know that this isn’t some ploy to get me into your car so you can use me?” asked Willa, peering up at him.

Even from all the way down there, the way his toned chest rumbled as a soft chuckle escaped from his wide lips managed to rub Willa the wrong way. Leaning against the tree, she crossed her arms over her chest and glanced up at him expectantly, waiting for an answer. A real answer. Despite the fact that his reaction to her question had invoked a series of unfriendly feelings, she felt considerably less threatened. Perhaps safe enough to accept his offer, no matter how dangerous it just might turn out to be.

“Oh, c’mon, I can’t be that much older than you, do you really think I’m going to try anything on you? Get real, kiddo. You seemed like you were in a rush and I figured I’d be a gentlemen.” The handsome male released a heavy, overdramatic sigh that caused her eyes to become two cat-like slits. “But,” he started, dragging out the word much like he had done to her body only minutes ago, “if you don’t want the ride and want to keep running, suit yourself. I’ll just head home.” With that, he turned on his heel and started towards the street.

“Wait!” she cried after him.

Willa couldn’t believe she was doing this. She was actually about to succumb to a complete stranger’s request to get in their car, and not only that, but she was desperate to climb into his vehicle and strap herself to the front seat of his car. She was crazy, but whatever he could possibly have in store for her would be nothing in comparison to what her parents would do to her if they found out. Maybe she was overreacting, but she very rarely got in trouble with her parental figures, and she had no intention whatsoever of beginning a rebellious streak, either.

Slowly, she watched as he turned around, a knowing grin plastered on his face. Immediately, her lips curled into an unappreciative scowl as she jogged to catch up to him. Willa was not the slightest bit pleased with her situation. I’m the world’s biggest idiot right now. God help me. If I die, I’m dying a complete fool. I don’t know who owes the other more. With a never-ending supply of bitter and doubtful thoughts on replay, she continued moving forward until she felt her thin arm brush against the fabric of his loose-fitted cobalt blue hoodie.

“I need the ride. Just drop me off at the end of the street, I’ll give you directions on our way. But I swear, if you try so much as one thing, I’ll make sure you regret the day you were born,” Willa threatened lowly, much to the stranger’s amusement.

“Sure thing, Princess,” he replied, a tone much like spoken laughter in his voice. Willa’s scowl only got deeper in response to his comment, but didn’t bother to correct him. She had yet to be assured that he was to be trusted, and giving out her name to him would only ensure more trouble, she could feel it in her bones. Nonetheless, she silently followed him as he led her to his vehicle. It was a sleek white car, which appeared to be somewhat costly, but her automobile knowledge stopped there. He unlocked the car, and proceeded to step in front of her to open the door for her.

Grumbling a quick, barely audible “Thank you”, Willa knew she didn’t have to look at him to know that he was enjoying her discontent with the situation. It was obvious that she was irritated, but it was just as obvious that she was desperate for a ride. He had what she needed, and that was a good enough bargain for her. Granted, it wasn’t one she was entirely too happy about, but there were certain things in life that she had to put up with and not complain about. Unfortunately, hitching a ride with a complete and utter stranger happened to be one of them. The situation itself was a disaster waiting to unfold, and in all honesty, she wasn’t sure if she could afford an unfurling catastrophe.

“So, do you come around here often?” he asked, his voice deferring a mild hint of interest as he started the car. Willa assumed he was merely trying to fill a silence that would otherwise prove to be uncomfortable for the both of them.

“Maybe,” responded Willa ambiguously, although from what she could tell, he would most likely take that as a ‘yes’. Perhaps he wasn’t a complete dolt, but she still had her reservations. She could trust him not to take advantage of her—or worse, kill her—but that wasn’t saying very much.

“Mhm. I see,” he murmured, sounding incredibly unconvinced as he merged into oncoming traffic. Willa was astonishingly fortunate that she lived in a small town, and not at all a huge driving distance from the woods. However, it took what felt like a lifetime longer to walk back home than it did sitting in a vehicle. She watched with a fair amount of interest as his right hand left the steering wheel to turn on the radio. Good, she thought, he knows this conversation is going nowhere.

Casually flipping through the stations, Willa’s doe eyes followed the movement of his fingers as they hesitated for a moment, before gently falling away from the tuning dial. He settled on a quiet song driven by the oddly-tuned acoustic guitar. Daring to listen closer, she could also hear a chorus of strings and even a mandolin in the relatively popular tune. It was accompanied by a steady backdrop created by the drums, which made the listening experience more entertaining for her as she followed the beat in her head. It was a song that could easily fade into the background, as well as an easily recognizable song that she’d heard hundreds of different times on several radio stations.

Willa found herself humming along as she stared out the window, capturing the sight of the outdoors whizzing past her. Taking a hasty peek over towards the driver’s seat, she was surprised to find that he had turned his head towards hers momentarily to comment on the sudden development. No doubt it sounded highly out of character from the unpleasant, grumpy individual she’d painted herself to be.

“What? You like this song?” he asked, sounding considerably more interested than he had minutes before. Willa promptly chose to ignore his question.

“Turn left on Fell, then a right two streets up on Oak,” she snapped sharply, steering the conversation back onto the directions she was supposed to be giving him. He obeyed wordlessly, although it was safe to say that Willa would not be doing any more humming for the rest of the car ride, no matter how difficult that might prove to be. She would be lying if she said she didn’t adore that particular song; it was one of those little ditties that went unnoticed, and, ultimately, one that she couldn’t help but hum or sing along with quietly every single time it came on the radio. It was a classic song, and one she loved at that.

Willa cringed as the song ended, in its place an overproduced song that she would classify as pure, unadulterated garbage. Her nose wrinkled in disgust, and she had to remind herself that it wasn’t her car as her hand reached towards the volume dial for a split second. Placing her hand back in her lap where it belonged, she had a feeling that her actions weren’t relatively unnoticed, and that she could expect a comment on it within the next minute.

“Not a fan? You can turn it off if you want, I don’t care.”

Once again, Willa chose to ignore him, despite the fact that he was being polite and even cordial towards her. Maybe she had to work on being a bit nicer to strangers, but in her defense, he had snuck up on her; she couldn’t just let her guard down. It was already stupid of her to have gotten into the car to begin with, even though he hadn’t done anything to her just yet. She didn’t need to make a dumber mistake and completely let her walls down.

“Turn right on Maple, and make a left turn on Evergreen.”

He effortlessly made the two consecutive turns, and she couldn’t help but note that he was a good driver. Probably a whole lot better than she could ever dream of being, but that didn’t say a whole lot. He smoothly pulled up on Evergreen street, and it had slipped Willa’s mind that she’d told him to drop her off at the end of the street. The momentary lapse of information was just enough time for her to gesture and explain to him the next set of directions.

“It’s the fifth house on the left, the white one with the black shutters.”

Complying with her orders, he pulled over towards the curb and hit the brake. His hands found the dial that controlled the volume, which he used to turn the music down. Good, that song was awful. What kind of music is that? His head turned to face her, his slate blue orbs soaking in the sight of her. Willa felt slightly uncomfortable under his gaze, which caused her to stiffen in her position, although she couldn’t deny she’d been guilty of taking a few lingering glimpses at him as well. Although she didn’t quite trust him just yet, she couldn’t refute the fact that he’d been graced with more than a fair amount of physical appeal.

“I never caught your name,” he stated, as Willa pulled her door open and got out of his car.

“That’s because I never gave it to you. I guess I should thank you, but considering the fact that you snuck up on me and you now know where I live, that’s not going to happen. But I guess I’ll see you around, or hopefully not.”

Cracking a hint of a smirk, she slammed the door shut without waiting for an answer before she crossed the front of his car and pulled out her key ring. Willa could hear his car still running and knew that he hadn’t left yet and was watching her as she fiddled with the keys until she got the correct key into the hole. Unlocking the door, she pushed it open and shut it behind her without a second glance behind her. Willa knew that he was still watching her, and she had no idea how to take it.

‘Ello, precious doves!
I originally didn’t have the slightest clue as to how these two would initially meet, only that he would spot her leaving the woods and get her attention. I had no idea he would be vying for her to notice him during that first sighting, or that he would essentially appear to be kidnapping her. Oh well, I suppose that’s the beauty in writing, eh?
I hope you guys liked this chapter. It’s not too interesting, but it’s just them meeting for the very first time, which I don’t imagine will be too entertaining. I’d love to hear your opinions on it, any sort of ideas or suggestions you have are more than welcome. On the other hand, what type of car do you think he ought to have? I have no knowledge of cars at all whatsoever, so you wonderful readers can input your lovely suggestions. Oh, and huge bonus points to anyone who thinks they might know the first song that was playing on his radio. (:
Enjoy, dear swans! <3
