We were living in a small village in Acadia. All our friends and relatives lived not far from us. Besides being uneducated, we lived peaceful and happily. Everyone was kind, and we all helped out. I was seventeen and about to be married.

The week my mother and I were sewing my wedding dress, the English arrived. They told us we needed to sign the Sermon of Allegiance. If not, things would get very ugly.
