Room 115

Prick

Once class was over I put my stuff back in my bag before sliding it over my shoulder. I stood up and once everyone filed out of the room other than Ethan and myself I slowly walked up to Mrs. Conner’s desk and ran a hand threw my hair. “Ethan come up here” she said. He sighed and walked over to us and I sat on the desk in the front row as she looked between us. “Ok Ethan. You know the rules of school. You can only perform in extracurricular activities, baseball and soccer in you case, if you maintain a c average in all your classes.” He nodded “You are now at 71% and I have yet to grade your most recent disaster of a paper” I snorted slightly and she sent me a quick smile before looking back at him. “You know what that means right?” she asked “I have a B” he said.

She looked at me and I rolled my eyes. “It means you are one failed paper away from losing your C average and not being able to play” she said. “You can’t do that Mrs!” he said. “Actually I can.” She said. She looked over at me “Marley, are you willing to tutor Ethan?” I looked at her “Say what?” I asked. “I’ll give you extra credit for it. And it will look good on your college applications.” She said. I bit my lip slightly before nodding. “Yeah, I’ll do it” I said quietly. She smiled and looked back at Ethan. “Ethan I’m giving you an option here. I will hold back grading your paper from last week and this week. You have a week to fix them. So you can either study with Marley every day after school or you can fail the class and get taken out of sports. It’s not much of an option now is it” she asked.

He looked over and I and I rose an eye brow. “You want me to spend time with the new girl?” he asked. “What are you on? I have been in every single class with you since kinder garden. I’m not new you are just fucking blind to anyone not in your little group of ego jerks, sluts or the kids you make fun of” I said. “Marley…Just both of you go to room 115 after school and start please.” She said. I hopped of the desk “Sure.” She smiled and I walked out of the class. “One chance Ethan. Don’t take it for granted. Don’t take her for granted. You need her to finish this class.”

That was all I heard before I was out of ear shot.

I walked to my next class. I barely paid attention to the rest of the day. I was too busy attempting to figure out how I was going to deal with Ethan fucking Winslow for an undetermined amount of time. Which sucked all in its self if you ask me.

When school ended I made my way to the room and walked in. I set my stuff down at one of the tables and sat down. I pulled out my homework and started working on it. I finished around 3:30 and looked around. Ethan was nowhere to be found and I rolled my eyes. I went to put my stuff away when the door opened. I looked up to see Ethan and sighed slightly. He walked over to me and tossed his bag down. “So how is this going to work marlin?” “Marley” “Yeah whatever” he said. He opened his bag and handed me a paper. “Here” he said pushing it in front of me. “What am I supposed to do with this?” I asked. “You are going to write my paper” he said like it was the most obvious thing in the world. I pushed his paper away “No, I’m going to show you the correct way to write the damn thing” I said. “Just write it. Aren’t you like a nerd or something? Come on. I’m me. You know you want to do this.”

I rolled my eyes and shoved my stuff in my bag and slung it over my shoulder. “Look here fucker, I’m not here for you. I’m here for the extra credit. I’m not writing your fucking paper. This was a stupid fucking idea. I hope you fail that class you stupid egotistical fucking prick” I snapped before walking towards the door. “Marla” “Marley!” I yelled “I’m sorry. Just don’t leave” he said. I looked at him before walking over and dropping my bag and sitting down. He smiled and sat down. “See I knew you couldn’t resist being in a room with me” he said. “You are hopeless” I said before standing up, grabbing my bag and walking out of the room.

“Marley!”

I felt him grab my hand and I yanked it away. “Please. I really need your help. I promise no more jerk. Just…don’t leave” he said. I looked at him and rolled my eyes before walking back into the room. I sat back down at the table and pulled a pen out of my bag and grabbed his paper and read over it.

“It’s amazing right?”

I looked at him and blinked “I can honestly say that I think I lost brain cells reading this pathetic excuse of a paper. What the fuck were you on when you wrote this?” I asked. He sighed and I ripped up the paper and tossed it in the garbage. “Hey” he said. I rolled my eyes. “It was shit. Let’s just….start over” I said. He groaned “That paper took me 25 minutes” he said. I looked at him and slapped him upside the head. “Hey!” “I’m going to do it every time you open your mouth and something stupid comes out” I said. He rubbed his head and I pulled a notebook and a marker out.

“Ok, so the topic last week was a topic that effects the world today. This weeks was choosing that you would change in this world if you could…do you have that paper?” I asked. He shook his head and I blinked “It was due today” I said. “I didn’t do it. I couldn’t think of anything” he said. I set my pen down and looked at him “Tell me Ethan. What is your backup plan?” I asked. “My what?” I ran a hand threw my hair pushing it out of my face. “Your back up plan. What are you going to do if you don’t get a free ride to college threw sports?” I asked. “That’s not possible I’m the best on the team. Haven’t you seen me play?” he asked. “1. Stop having an ego it makes you a prick. 2. No I haven’t I don’t do school events. They are bullshit. I work.” I said. “I’m getting a scholarship. I know I am. I play good” he said. “Ok, what if you break your legs? What if you fracture your leg bones. What if you damage your arm and you can’t pitch. What if you-“ “Ok I get it” he said.

“Look, I’m not trying to burst your bubble and I’m not saying that any of that is going to happen, I’m just saying, you need a backup plan. You’ve worked your entire school career on sports. It was your focus…but you can’t predict the future.” I said. “How’d you know I’ve been working at it?” he asked. “Like I said. We have been in the same classes since grade school. I’ve watched you go from the nice little boy to a prick who thinks the world revolves around him when he is around his buddies.” I said before grabbing my pen.

“Anyways. AS for writing. You need topics to write about. So let’s start with a topic that effects the world today.” I said. “What did you get on your paper?” he asked. I pulled it out of my bag and handed it to him. “105? How did you even do that?” he asked. “Write is going to be my major in college. It’s what I do. It’s what I like. It’s what I’m good at.” I said. “Can I read it?” he asked. I shrugged “Sure. I personally don’t care” I said. “How long is it?” he asked “It’s 4 page. 21 paragraphs and over 3500 words” I said. “How long did you work on it a week?” he asked.

“2 hours”

His head snapped up to me and I shrugged. “Like I said. It’s what I’m good at” I said. He read the paper and then once he was done he looked at me. “That was amazing” I shrugged slightly “Anyways back to your paper. What is something that effects the world today?” “I don’t know.” I rolled my eyes. “You like baseball right. Baseball and soccer?” I asked. He nodded “What else to you like?” I asked. “I like girls” he said. I rolled my eyes. “Baseball and soccer it is. So write about what you know. Write about what interests you. That way you will be interested in your paper.” I said. “Will you help me?” I looked over at him and smiled slightly.

“That’s what I’m here for.”
