Epilogue
David brought the official release mandate to the prison’s warden, who looked at it skeptically. He raised his head and observed the policeman through his glasses and handed him the paper. He then proceeded to call someone, and a large man came to take David to Richard’s cell.
“Hey mate, missed me?” – he pulled the paper from his pocket – “You’re free. You’re out. It’s you and me again!”
Richard couldn’t believe it.
“I thought you were going to let me rot in there! Man am I glad to see you!” – he exited the cell the guard had just opened – “What… Who did it?”
David looked out at his feet, his smile fading away. He explained everything about the case to his friend. They were both silent for a few seconds, then Richard grabbed David and hugged him.
“You wanna crash at mine? Your car’s at the station and it’s something like 11 PM. I’m surprised they even let me in.”
“Sure thing! Haven’t been there in a while. Hope I can walk without mountain shoes.”
They left the prison and headed back to the condo, happy to have found each other again.
