Only Up From Here

Fancy Meetin' You Here

Kali’s P.O.V.

As I pulled into the driveway I looked around the yard for my dad’s truck but I didn't see it, they must by out. I parked in front of the barn and hopped out not even bothering to put my things inside. I ran into the barn and found Carmen in her stall.

“Hey baby girl! Are you ready to go for a ride?” She pushed her head into my hand, taking that as a yes I started to put on her blanket and saddle. “Alright baby girl lets go!”

I walked her out of the barn and onto the lawn where I pet her a little bit longer. Her golden brown fur shined in the sun and I couldn’t help but smile. I put my foot in the holster and climbed up. I decided I should tell someone where I was going so I rode over to the “stable boy’s” house. John wasn’t really a boy now in his late 50’s and to by honest he was a second dad to me so I knew he would relay the message to my parents, wherever they may be.

“John?”

“Kali dear I didn’t even hear you pull up! How was class?” I watched as his weathered skin tightened in to a grin.

“Oh it was class. I am heading up to the mountains so if you see mom and dad will you let them know? I have my phone but you know me . . .”

“Sure dear I can do that. They went into town a while ago figure they should be headed back soon. Be safe you know me and my hearing these days if you hurt yourself there is no guarantee I will hear that damned house phone.”

I couldn’t help but laugh, “I will be fine. I promise. I will be back soon! Love you John!” I was out the door before I heard his light reply of I love you, too.

The trail was not to far from the house but I knew once we were on it Carmen wouldn’t be able to run so I allowed her to canter over to the opening. As I slowed her down at the head of the trail I took a deep breath and just let every worry in life go.

It’s fall so the leaves are all changing and I was regretting not bringing my camera along. As we rode on, the trail moved on higher up the mountain, as it narrowed I slowed Carmen down to a slow walk just in case we met someone. My favorite spot, a small clearing, was coming up and I had decided to take a break and let Carmen meander a little. As I jumped down I turned and kissed Carmen’s snout, she really was my baby. I walked in to the clearing that was filled with a million wild flowers and sat down.

I sat for a good half hour before deciding I should either move on or head back when I heard Carmen nay and run back my way. I looked at her suspiciously as she was not a horse that was easily spooked. She neared I could see there was someone coming down the trail. I laughed at the thought of her trying to protect me. As the person came closer I could tell they were riding a rather large black stallion, one I didn’t really recognize from around here. I grabbed Carmen’s reins and headed that way, when the man saw me he smiled and slowed to a walk, as he got closer he jumped down.

“Funny meeting you here.” I walked a little closer and started to laugh.

“Shane right?” I smiled finally realizing it was the boy from school.

“Yeah, that’s me. So what brings you all the way down here?”

“Well, I live right over the hill I ride these trails all the time. You however, I have never seen up here, and believe me I would remember you.” I flirted a little as his smile grew.

“Well, we just moved out this way from Austin and I figured I would take Boss here out for a ride," He patted the stallion's neck as he spoke, "You know get to know the land.”

“We have beautiful trails in this area you will have a great time exploring. Just be careful there has been talk of a mountain lion roaming around.” I started to walk towards my stirrups so I could continue home when Shane stopped me.

“Wow that could be a bad break for someone who doesn't know the land. Since I’m new I wouldn’t, you know, want to put Boss here in any danger would you want to show me the trails a little?”

A brave man I thought, “Well,” I checked my cell phone for a time, it was only 5:30 so I had a little while before I should be back to the house. “Sure I suppose I can show you a few good ones. I don’t have long but I can take you to the break offs that are closest.”

Again he smiled his cheeks turning a little pink and his dimples emerging. I hopped up onto Carmen’s back as he did the same. “Thanks I really do appreciate it.”

Shane’s P.O.V.

As I rode behind Carmen and Kali I couldn’t help but stare. Her long brown hair was tied into a simple ponytail and every now and then when the sun hit just right it looked red. She was wearing a plaid black shirt jeans and cowgirl boots, she was absolutely stunning. Earlier I had noticed her piercing blue eyes and I couldn’t help but wait for her to turn around so I could get a glimpse of them again.

I tried to make small talk as we rode, “So, Kali Jo, what are you going to school for?”

“Business management, I would really like to own my own ranch when I am done or help my parents manage theirs.” She seemed so confident in her answer, “You?”

“Well, I am a major in psychology, not sure what I actually want to do when I am done but I figured this was a good place to start.” She turned and smiled at me, her smile could knock me right off Boss with those perfect white teeth and pink lips.

“That’s always good, a starting point I mean.”

I laughed lightly, “Smart-ass I see.”

Again she turned smiling, this time the most amazing laugh coming from those lips, “I wouldn’t be me without it now would I?”

“I am sure not. Kali if you don’t mind me asking what is your last name?” I was curious who my neighbors were.

“Lewis.” She said it quietly and then it clicked.

“Like Brady and Rebecca Lewis?” I was in shock.

“Yep that would be my parents.” She sounded so nonchalant.

Her parents where known around the country for their beautiful ranch and the 35+ horses that resided there. I had only seen pictures of the place in magazines but it was my goal to visit there and get pointers of how to own my very own ranch.

“Your parents are like-“

“Legends?" She cut me off. Before I could agree to her question she continued, "Yeah we get that a lot. But to be honest we are nothing that special. My mom has a great sense for decorating and design and my dad has the business and ranch handle. It just all seemed to click for the two of them.” As she talked she slipped her phone out of her pocket. “Look I am so sorry to cut this short but my parents are going to be home soon and I am not sure if John will remember to tell them I took Carmen out.” She stopped and I walked Boss up next to her.

“It’s OK I understand. It was really nice meeting you again.” I smiled at her extending my hand.

She took it lightly in hers “Yeah it was. Who knows maybe I will meet you here again soon.” With that she took off down the hill at a slow run.

I watched her as she went hoping I would see those blue eyes again soon. I laughed to myself as I turned Boss around and headed in the opposite direction. Kali Jo Lewis, wait until I tell dad.
