The New Queen

Pavel

Anna seriously struggled with the knee injury after she got it. It really didn’t require surgery when she first hurt her knee, but as time went on it did.
She had to get surgery which took more time out of training. If the year was 2012 she wouldn’t care, but she didn’t want her debut as a senior athlete to be a bad one. She didn’t want to do two events.
She didn’t do much heavy training after the surgery. She did a lot of rehab during the morning and during the day she would do basics on bars and beam. Vault and floor were out of the question for right now.
It sucked, but on a good note she met a very special person while going to rehab. His name is Pavel Pavlov, he’s almost 20 years old and he’s also a gymnast. He was very sweet to Anna. The age difference was around four years but he didn’t care. He still liked talking to her.

“How’s my beautiful queen doing this morning” Pavel started when Anna got into the rehab center a few minutes away from Lake Krugloe. “You weren’t here yesterday”
“I was with my parents” she said. “My little sister was acting in a play at her school and I racked up enough vacation time”
“I wish I had little siblings”
“Well I have five, so if you want a few you can take one. You should take my little brother, Mikhail, he’s dying for an older brother” Pavel chuckled.
“What’s he like?”
“He’s 14 and he plays football and he’s not very smart but he has a future as a quarterback” they both giggled.
“Do you have any gymnastic siblings?”
“Yeah, just my little sister, Dasha, who is eight. She loves it” Anna explained. She took a seat next to Pavel. “But she doesn’t want to do the whole Olympics thing. She doesn’t want to be away from home”
“When did you want to be an Olympian?” he asked her.
“When I was 7” she said. “I was willing to make those sacrifices, though. Being the oldest of 6 is hard”
“I can imagine—you’ll make your whole family proud in four years” he said. “I know it” Anna blushed and looked at the floor. “What do your parents think of all of this?”
“My mom has always wanted me to chase my dreams. My dad isn’t thrilled about it, but he lives in South Africa with his business so he doesn’t see any of us often”
“Oh” Pavel said. “That must suck”
“I get to see him a lot more then my siblings do, he was at the American Cup for “business” Anna put ‘business’ in air quotes. “He’s back and forth from Albania and South Africa”
“Albania? But if he’s from Albania why is your last name Zabrikova?” Anna laughed.
“That’s like asking why someone from Africa is white” she said. “My mom knew she wanted us to have a traditional Russian background and that eventually we would live in Russia again so she gave us her last name so we would blend in—I love it”
“Zabrikova” Pavel said. “I like that last name. I don’t think anyone will have that name in the future”
“Hope not. I want a skill named after me” she said. “Maybe something on uneven bars—if that’s going to be the event im restricted to for the next few months”
“People are intimidated by you” Pavel said. “Like people are intimidated by Denis”
“I know” she said. “I haven’t done anything. Im intimidated by Aliya, she’s scary”
“Yeah” Pavel chuckled. “She is sometimes”
“Maria see’s me like another kid” Anna said. “So does Viktoria and Ksenia. They just know I’ll do a lot of good someday. Like with what I did at the American Cup. But I don’t want people to fear me unless their American” they both laughed.

That night Anna was super smiley and happy. “What happened this morning that is making you like this?” Maria asked. “I need a hardcore training partner not a pussy” Anna laughed.
“I got to talk to Pavel today”
“Are you serious? What do you see in him?”
Anna shrugged. “He’s cute and he thinks im beautiful and he’s nice to me” she said.
“But he’s dating Aliya still”
“So, it’s not like we can ever be together. There’s nothing wrong with having a little innocent crush on him. Aliya shouldn’t be jealous of me”
“She’s scary though” Maria said. “She can destroy you with her eyes”
“Im not afraid”
