Camp Wakiki

Lila Donovan

The Last Hoorah was already in full swing by the time Lila Donovan arrived. She slipped in unnoticed, sticking to the outskirts of the party and observing who was there. She'd missed that opportunity at the staff meeting, having forgone the well rehearsed and worn out speech in favor of spending some more time with her boyfriend. It was totally worth it in her opinion, even if she would get slammed for it later or tomorrow. She was a camper her whole childhood and this was her second year as a counselor and nothing had changed in all those years so she figured she was safe.

“We missed you earlier Miss Donovan.” A chill ran up Lila’s spine. She froze for a moment before slowly turning to greet who she assumed to be Doug Ellison. Instead she found her best friend standing with a smirk.

“You bitch!” Lila laughed before launching herself at Darcy. “It’s criminal how good you are at disguising your voice.”

Darcy shrugged. “What can I say? It’s a gift.”

The two girls laughed and linked their arms together as they headed to where the drinks were. They’d become fast friends last year when they were both first time counselors and despite coming from different areas of England they’d remained close friends during the off-season. Darcy was the only one who knew that Lila had snuck out a few times at the end of last summer to see her boyfriend and that kind of trust wasn’t something Lila gave out lightly.

“So how’s Jordan?” Darcy asked as they reached the table. Lila didn’t miss the way her friend’s face scowled a little as she said his name but she ignored it. Darcy wasn’t the first person to dislike Jordan and she was sure that she wouldn’t be the last.

“He’s good,” Lila said as she grabbed a red cup and filled it with Sprite. “He’s the reason I missed the meeting. We spent a little more time together.”

“Oh,” Darcy nodded. “That’s nice.”

It really was, Lila answered in her head. Even if she had told Darcy about what happened with them earlier she knew the other girl wouldn’t change her opinion of him and that was fine.

“Any new eye candy this summer?” Lila asked as her friend poured herself a drink. Darcy glanced up at her and then out at the crowd.

“No one really new,” she said with a shrug. “I heard there was a new Irish guy but I haven’t seen him yet so who knows. Otherwise it’s just the same old four.”

“Right,” Lila nodded as she rolled her eyes. The fab four as some of the other guys jokingly called them. They always had at least one girl trailing after them and a ton of other females wishing they could. “Liam, Zayn, Louis and Harry.”

Last summer Lila had worked with both Zayn and Louis but she’d only gotten sparing glimpses at Liam and Harry. Zayn was hot but Louis didn’t really do it for her. Everyone seemed to think that Harry was the golden ticket and from what Lila saw, she had to agree. But otherwise she didn’t know them. And she didn’t really need to; she had Jordan at home and from the gossip that went around it didn’t really seem like any of them had room for more girls in their harems.

“That’d be them,” Darcy agreed, an unreadable expression passing over her features.

“You alright Darce?” Lila asked after a moment.

Darcy nodded but now she had sort of a faraway look to her eyes. Something was going on with her friend but Lila wasn’t one to pry so she left it. After telling her friend that she’d see her later, she continued on her rounds. The Last Hoorah was supposed to be one of the best things about the summer and the final time counselors had to just hang out and do whatever but for Lila it wasn’t as great as she’d always imagined it would be as a camper. Instead it was rather boring but she figured that having a boyfriend had something to do with that.

As she made her way through all the chattering and dancing counselors her eyes trailed over all the outside groups. She couldn’t help but notice the ‘fab four’. Zayn and Liam were standing off to the side, laughing about something or other as they looked out on the party. Violet, Liam’s girlfriend was by his side with Chloe, the girl that used to date Louis. Lila couldn’t help but laugh to herself. The ‘fab four’ weren’t all friends, that much was definitely true, but they were all so dysfunctional anyway.

“I can’t decide if laughing to yourself means insanity or a good time.” Lila nearly jumped out of her skin. Heart racing and hands tingly, she chanced a glance at the foreign voice and nearly laughed again. Harry was standing beside her, a drink in his head and a smirk on his lips.

“Definitely insanity,” she said with a nod.

Harry’s smirk deepened. “All the best ones are.”

“Well I’m sure you would know,” Lila shot back.

Harry’s smirk pulled into a smile. “I don’t think we’ve met. It’s Lila, right?”

“Yeah and your name is…?”

The curly haired lad looked taken aback for a moment but the surprise was fleeting. “Harry,” he supplied easily. “Do you know where you’re working this summer?

Lila studied him for a moment before dragging her fingers through her long brown locks. “Eight and nine and water sports,” she answered as she tried to stomp down on the nerves fluttering in her stomach.

“Well then,” Harry started, pulling his eyes away from the bonfire to settle back on Lila. “I guess it’s my lucky summer. I’ll see you tomorrow, Lila.”

He turned then, walking away and leaving a confused girl in his wake. What did he mean, lucky summer? And why would he be seeing her tomorrow? Lila wasn’t sure but she was definitely excited to find out.
