You Should've Been Here

You should've been there.

Madison looked around the crowded room as a sigh left her lips. She knew she shouldn't have been this disappointed. Afterall, it wasn't the first time his job kept him from something she found important. She of course could never voice how upset she really was. The two were nothing more than friends, so how could she be?

"Madison! Hello!? Are you going to get your phone?" Her friend Ravyn stated waving her hand in front of the dazed girl.

"Oh! Yeah!" Madison snapped back into place immediately as she reached for the ringing phone on the table. She excused herself and made her way through the crowd as she answered it preparing herself for what lied ahead.

"Hello?" She spoke gently as she shut the front door behind her. The quietness on the porch versus the loudness going on inside was almost unnerving.

"Are you mad at me?" His sweet voice echoed through the phone and she bit her bottom lip even if the red lipstick would probably be on her teeth.

"No." She whispered as she gently sat on the step not caring if the cold was now making her regret her choice in dress.

"You should be."

"Vic, it's ok. I understand. Really. I know how this goes. We've been friends long enough."

Vic sighed on the other end as he himself shifted in his uncomfortable bunk and she stared out into the night aimlessly as the silence covered the two.

"I'm going to make it up to you..."

"It's ok. It's not a big deal."

"What? Yes it is! It's your birthday and you're my best friend. This is a big deal, Madi." He said seriously and she felt her stomach twist at the small nick name. She hated it, but it didn't sound so bad when he said it.

"Ok, ok. I got it." She finally mumbled out knowing he wouldn't drop it otherwise.

"I'll be home for certain tomorrow and we will celebrate. NiƱa, I'm sorry for doing this."

"Don't call me that."

He chuckled softly, "What?"

"Something with girl. I'm not stupid, Vic."

"You've been around me too much I see." He responded with laughter in his voice.

She couldn't help but laugh with him. His laugh was contagious.

"Look, I really need to go back inside. Afterall, it is my party."

"And you'll cry if you want to?" He asked and she laughed as she dusted off her dress with her free hand.

"No crying. See you tomorrow?" She questioned and he didn't hesitate to respond, "Yes, I swear to you I'll be there in the morning. Have an amazing night."

"I will. Sleep well. Goodnight."

The two hung up with each other and all though disappointed Madison sucked it up and went back inside with a fake smile on her face. It would have been so much better if he would have been here that she was certain of. He always made parties so much easier for her to say the least. He was loud and a people person. Not that she repelled everyone, but she was a lot more reserved without him around.

"Is he coming?" Ravyn asked and she looked over at the girl who was leaned against the kitchen counter.

"Who?"

Ravyn rolled her eyes, "Vic. Who else?"

Madison shook her head causing her dark curls to move about a bit, "No. He can't. He's going to be here tomorrow."

"Bummer."

She shrugged, "What can you do you know?"

"Now we have to deal with you being all quiet and what not." Ravyn stated bluntly and the girl couldn't help but laugh, "I am not like that."

"You are without him."

"I really don't know why."

"I don't either. I just think it's because you're really comfortable with him."

"Maybe so. I mean, I have known him for like ten years afterall."

"Right, well can you at least be sociable? All these people are here for you."

"Yeah, yeah." Madison mumbled ready for everyone to just leave so she could be alone, but she would at least put a smile on for another hour. She wasn't the type to be rude.

The girl adjusted her red dress before breathing in and leaving the kitchen. Well, she was more ready than she ever would be so she needed to just get it over with.
