Southwood Academy seemed to appear out of nowhere, but it already had a reputation to rival the top three private academies in the region of East Harbor.

Stella Montgomery is a freshman, attending at her mother's wishes to expose her to a different crowd and perhaps make a few friends for a change. But Stella is hardly sociable and doesn't know how to interact with her peers until she meets a confident junior girl named Elle Hart.

The first few days pass and strange things begin to happen at Southwood. Tensions seem to flare with the late arrival of at least a dozen students and Elle appears to have something resembling a history with the unpleasant Clause Decker. Something else is stirring underneath the facade Southwood has worked to maintain and Stella is pretty sure that Elle Hart and Clause Decker have something to do with it. But she can hardly focus her attentions on the mystery at hand when Samuel Rowe and Nico Malloy are giving her attention that she has no idea what to do with.
