“Hey guys” I sleepily smiled
“Why haven’t you answered our calls or texts?” Pat asked with his hands on his hips.
“I was asleep” I said rubbing my eyes
“We saw you around 10” John stated
“Yeah and I came in and went to sleep” I said annoyed
“You looked like you had been out all night. And you were in the same shirt you were in last night. Someone get laid?” he smirked
“Not really. I just forgot to bring extra clothes. I stayed at my best friend Chelsea’s house” I rolled my eyes “Are we going to stand in my doorway all day, or do ya’ll want to come in?” I asked. The sun was killing my eyes. The guys walked in and followed me to the living room.
“Well I guess you really were asleep” Jared laughed as he saw my pillow and blanket on the couch. I walked over and folded the blanket and threw it on the blanket basket and put my pillow on top of it.
“Yeah. I fell asleep reading” I told him
“Got any plans today?” Garrett asked as he sat down
“Nope. Just hanging out here”
“Wanna hang with us?” He asked
“Well I guess. Since your already here I can’t really say no” I laughed
“Wanna have a movie day? You don’t look like you really wanna go outside today” Jared asked
“Sounds good to me. We can go in the basement and watch the movies, it’s a bit bigger than in here.” They followed me to the basement, it had a big L shaped couch and a big TV.
“Pick a movie from the movie rack and I’ll get popcorn and drinks” I told them as I walked back upstairs. I went into the kitchen and grabbed 3 bags of popcorn out of the pantry. I put them in the microwave. I turned around and John was behind me.
“Jeez! You scared me!” I laughed
“Sorry. I figured you might need help” He said leaning against the counter
“Yeah that would be great” I smiled. John made me nervous. He was handsome. But he seemed annoying. He kept making digs at me about everything. I opened the fridge and looked to see what drinks we had.
“Wanna look and see what the guys want to drink. You know them better than I do” I said motioning to the fridge and grabbing myself a bottle of water.
“Yeah sure.” He looked in the fridge and pulled out some drinks. I opened the cabinet to get a bowl for the popcorn. I was on my tiptoes, trying to reach it, but I couldn’t reach it. I felt a body press against my back and reach over me and grab the bowel. I turned around and was once again face to face with John. Well, I am 5 foot 1 and he is at least 6 foot so it was more like chest to face. I looked up and him.
“Sorry, I saw you struggling” he said nervously
“Its okay. Thanks” I smiled as he backed away
“Look, I’m sorry about all the shit I’ve said to you. I had no right to say it. I just was skeptical about you since you were from Scottsdale. My ex goes there and she was a bitch. She cheated on me and treated me like shit. But I know I shouldn’t judge you because of that. Hell you probably don’t even know her” he said looking into my eyes
“I’m sorry. I promise. I’m not like most people at my school” I frowned
“So, Ole Miss? That’s not a team you really see around here.” He gestured towards my shirt
“My parents graduated from Ole Miss. That’s where they met and where they fell in love. It’s my dream school. My brother is a sophomore there now. And my whole family lives in Mississippi, well except for us. That’s where we lived before we moved to Arizona when I was 14.” I explained
“I figured you were from the south. You have a slight accent” He smiled. The microwave beeped, indicating that the popcorn was ready. I emptied the bags into the bowl. John and I walked down to the basement. The guys picked Fight Club.
“Oh! This is my favorite movie!” I stated as I sat on the couch next to Pat. John passed out drinks and sat next to me.
“Seriously? I pegged you for a chick flick kind of gal” Jared laughed
“What did I tell you about judging people” I laughed. Jared started the movie, and the room was silent. I pulled my knees up to my chest. I leaned my head back on the couch and got comfortable. After Fight Club, Garret picked Saw 4. I hated scary movies, but I wasn’t going to tell them that. I flinched a couple of times in the beginning. John noticed and looked at me. I gave him a small smile. He grabbed my hand slowly and gently rubbed circles on it. It defiantly helped me get through the gruesome scenes. He held my hand the rest of the movie. After the movie, the guys were trying to find another movie to watch. John was still sitting next to me and Garret and Pat were wrestling on the floor over a movie. My phone started ringing on the table. I hand left John’s when I went to answer my phone. My dad was calling
“Hey Dad”
“Hey sweetie”
“What’s up?”
“We have a dinner reservation tonight with Vanessa and Jared. You need to be ready by 6. I’ll pick you up at the house. It’s a nice restaurant. So, dress nice”
“Alright. I’ll see you at 6”
“Bye sweetie”
I hung up the phone and sat it on the table
“Everything okay?” Pat asked
“Yeah, I just have to get ready for dinner. With Jared and his mom” I said looking at Jared
“Yeah my mom just texted me and told me to get ready” Jared told me
“Well, I’m guessing that we should head out then” Garrett said. The guys hugged me goodbye and left. I walked to my room and put Pandora on. I searched my closet for a dress to wear. I found a pink chiffon dress and put a small tan belt with it. I strapped on my tan wedges. I went into the bathroom and braided my hair into a bun. I put on light makeup. I grabbed my small gold/silver glitter clutch. I walked downstairs at exactly 6.I heard my dad’s car honk. I walked outside. I saw Tim and John across the street and waved to them. They smiled and waved. I swear I saw John blush. I shook it off as I walked to the car. I got into my dad’s Range Rover and we drove off
“You ready for dinner?” he asked
“Yes sir, I’m starving!”
“Vanessa is really excited about this”
“I’m excited to get to know her better. I’ve gotten to know Jared pretty well. Him and the guys came over today and watched movies”
“I’m really glad ya’ll get along so well. So how was the party last night?”
“It was fun. It was great seeing everyone”
“Did you keep Chelsea off the floor?” he laughed
“That was one time dad!” I laughed. When we were 15, we came home from a party drunk and Chelsea fell in our hall. Dad thought it was the funniest thing ever.
We pulled into the parking lot of House of Tricks, an upscale restaurant. Vanessa and Jared were sitting at one of the tables on the patio. Vanessa waved us over. We greeted each other and took our seats. The waiter came over and asked for our drink order, I ordered lemon water, since my stomach was still woozy from last night.
“So Danielle, Jared told me you had a movie day today” Vanessa said trying to start conversation
“Yes ma’am, the guys came over and we watched movies in the basement” I smiled
“Yeah, all the guys love Danielle” Jared laughed
“We’ll I’m glad Danielle is making friends in Tempe. Not that I don’t like Chelsea, but you could use some more friends” Dad told me
“I have friends Dad!” everyone laughed. Our food came shortly after. We exchanged small talk while we at. Jared leaned over to me
“Hey, did John seem off to you today?” he asked
“like how?” I asked confused
“He was acting funny all day. This morning he was fine, then around 10 he got pissed off, and then when we were watching movies, he was happy” he explained
“I don’t know. Before we watched the movie, he apologized for being rude. He told me about his ex that goes to Desert Mountain, and that he didn’t want to judge me because I go to her school”
“He told you about Kayla?” he looked shocked
“Yeah. Is that bad?”
“He never talks about her. She crushed him”
“He did seem pretty broken up about it”
“He’ll tell me whatever his problem is later. He always does”
We continued eating. My mind wandered to John. Why was he acting strange? He was acting weird in the kitchen and then he held my head during the movie. Then when I saw him outside, he blushed when I waved. Did he like me? I shook that thought out of my head. John would never date another person from Scottsdale after whatever happened with him and this Kayla girl.
My dad paid for the meal and we walked to the parking lot. My dad and Vanessa kissed and said their goodbyes. Vanessa hugged me and so did Jared. We got home around 8:30. Dad went into his office to do some paperwork. I went into my room. I got one of my dad’s old t-shirts and a pair of pajama shorts. I got into my bed and turned on the TV. Theo padded his way into my room and hopped on my bed.
