The Day I Met You

007

Something was on top of me, shaking me. I groaned as I tried to push it away. Rolling over was not an option because I was pinned. Sound started flowing into my awakening ears. “Wake up!” someone yelled. I groaned again.

“No!”

“Reylyn Knight, get your lazy but out of this bed. You have a bar full of drunk FMX riders, and you promised me you would train!”

My eyes shot open without notice. The bright light poured into my already sore pupils. “Shit! I forgot about that.”

The regulars left around 1:30 A.M. last night. I told Deegan and his friends that the bar closed at 2, so they needed to figure something out. Buster, however, had other plans. He made me work until 4:30 serving the guys before he finally agreed to lock them in the bar and let them sleep off their drinks. I grabbed my alarm clock. 7 A.M. I glared at Jamie. None of those guys would be awake now. I finally managed to shove Jamie off me.

She threw a pair of running shorts and a white Hurley tank-top at me. I got out of bed and walked to the bathroom where I pulled on the clothes. I brushed my teeth before putting my long dark hair into a loose bun. My keys were in my hand; Jamie was locking the door behind us. I jumped as the screaming started.

Jamie slammed the door as we rushed down the stairs. I quickly shoved the key in the lock and threw open the door. Kyle was lying on the floor in a ball holding his ankle. His wife was trying to use the bar phone. “Call 9-1-1,” I yelled at Jamie who whipped out her cell phone. I rushed over to Kyle.

“Hey, hey, look at me,” I coaxed as I held his face. Tears beaded up on his cheeks, but his eyes remained shut. “Come on, look at me.” I took his face in my hands and force him to be still.

“My ankle,” he whimpered. I looked down at his leg. His black pants and etnies covered his lower calf muscles and ankles. I looked at Jamie, who had the same thought as me; we gently removed his shoes from his feet before pushing up the legs of his pants. With each movement he let out a small scream. His mid-calf to his foot on his left leg was swollen and a little purplish. His right leg was swollen but not as bruised.

“It’s obviously broken,” I stated as I stared.

“No, badly bruised and probably fractured. You probably got a few ligaments too,” Jamie predicted.

“I don’t know the address. We’re in some bar that he had a fit to come to instead of going home,” his wife screamed into the phone. I yelled the address to her before getting off the floor to grab some ice. She was noticeably glaring at me as she fed the address to the clerk. “Get here now!”

I handed the bag of ice to his wife. She walked over to him and held his hand while gently putting the ice on his left leg. Her eyes cut to me every few minutes in slits of fury. I grabbed my pack of cigarettes and walked towards the door. His scream pierced my ears. “Don’t go! Don’t leave me!”

“I’m right here, baby,” his wife cooed. It seemed like he was pushing her away. I knew my mind was playing tricks on me, so I walked out of the door despite Kyle’s screams.

The paramedics didn’t have a problem finding the bar. We usually called them once a week when the Friday night drunks started brawls. I nodded a weak hello to David, the regular paramedic, as I lit my second cig. The smoke filled my lungs as the nicotine calmed my nerves. I turned to the door just as they shifted Kyle onto a gurney.

I pulled the cigarette from my lips as I helped hold the bar doors open. Kyle grabbed my hand weakly as he was wheeled past me. “You’ll be alright,” I reassured him while giving his hand a gentle squeeze. They pulled him away from me as they loaded him into the ambulance; his wife glared harder. I put the cig back to my lips just in time for Jamie to yank it away.

“It’s time to run,” she stated.

“After all of that,” I questioned, “wouldn’t you rather have a drink?”

She laughed as she answered, “Yes, after all that. I need a drink, but I’ll take a run.”

“Fine, but I want my cigarette back,” I laughed as I put my hand on my hip.

She smiled, “Come and get it, Rey.”
