I Could Be the One

two ;

The Miami sun blazed down on me, frying my already darkly tanned skin. I was perched comfortably on the white plastic lawn chair, my sunglasses covering most of my face while the blue water of the pool reflected the hot rays right back at me. I took a sip of my icy margarita and eyed the bar across the pool.

With a sigh, I readjusted my strapless bikini top, making sure I was all covered up before I closed my eyes and continued to sunbathe. I couldn't help but to wonder what Nicky was up to, considering I hadn't heard a word from him since lunchtime. Last I knew, he was back in the room working on a new remix for his show tonight.

I must have dozed off because the next thing I knew, my skin was suddenly freezing. With a gasp, my eyes shot open. Nicky's song-like laughter filled my ears.

His frame towered over me, a bright smile fixed on his lips that put the shining sun to shame. Water dripped from his hair, the drops racing down his chest. Each droplet that ran off his nose landed on my bare stomach. His cold hands landed on my hips and he pulled me to my feet with little effort.

"Nicky," I whined, attempting to squirm out of his grip but he just simply would not allow that to happen. He wrapped me into a hug, pulling me close to his water soaked body. I put my hands on his chest and tried to push him away to no avail.

"But baby, I thought you wanted to swim!" The thick accented voice yelled as I struggled against his grip, causing other hotel guests who were lounging around the pool to look in our direction.

"Nicky, no," I told him in a stern, warning voice as he lifted me bridal style in his arms. With wide eyes, I looked up at him and begged him to stop. He laughed loudly again, darting off towards the deep end of the pool. "Nicky!" I screeched just before we were submerged into the cold water.

My feet pushed off the bottom of the pool, rocketing me to the surface. Nicky emerged not long after me, his contagious laugh once again filling the airwaves. I glared at him, wiping off my now running mascara.

"I hate you," I told him, my body shivering as large goosebumps rose to my once smooth skin. A cheeky smile played across his soft features.

"You love me," he challenged, pushing his dripping hair off of his forehead.

"Yeah, almost as much as I hate you," I countered quickly, kicking my feet to stay afloat, jealous that Nicky was able to stand freely in the deep water. He chuckled a little, pulling me into his chest.

I couldn't help but to smile as I rested my head on my boyfriend's wet chest. It was times like this that I wish I could put on repeat and live forever. I wrapped my legs around his thin waist as his lips found the top of my head.

"Well I love you too, brat," he whispered against my skin, just before pressing another kiss to my forehead.

To say I was excited was a complete understatement. After hearing the news that my old friend would be joining us for Nicky's show, I could barely contain myself. Especially at dinner right before we were planning to head to the club.

"Eat your dinner," Sander, Nicky's manager ordered me, pointing his fork in my direction. I stuck my tongue out at him and pulled out my phone anyway, still ignoring the plate of food in front of me.

'So excited to see you tonight, Tim, I hit send just before feeling Nicky's hand creep up my thigh. I sent him a sexy smirk as the waitress came over to refill our drinks.

"I can't believe you guys didn't tell me Tim was coming until now," I pouted, taking a bite of my chicken. Sander rolled his eyes.

"There's a reason we waited," he said before going on a tangent in his native tongue. Whatever he said caused Nicky to laugh and pat my bare leg. I glared for just a second but my cell phone buzzing stole my attention from the two Dutchmen sitting with me.

'Let's get drinks, yeah?' I smiled and typed out a reply before sliding my phone into my tote bag and forcing myself to finish my dinner that Sander so generously offered to buy.

"I think I'm going to drop a new song tonight," Nicky announced through bites. I almost scolded him for speaking with his mouth full, but I chose to brush it off. Sander said something in reply, but I barely listened to their businesslike conversation. It always bored me anyway.

It wasn't long before we finally made our way to the club where sound check was underway. I got myself an adult beverage while Nicky went off to get his laptop to be sure his playlist was how he wanted it.

"Where are my headphones?" I heard Nicky ask loudly. Intrigued, I turned away from the bar and set down my drink.

Sander fumbled around, digging through a duffle bag for a minute or two. I stood and made my way to Nicky's side.

"They must still be laying on the hotel bed," Sander shook his head incredulously, continuing his search. Nicky scrunched up his nose in frustration. He held his words safely behind his teeth though, knowing this was very unlike Sander. Nicky's manager was known to be on the top of his game at all times.

"I brought mine man, you can use them," Tim announced himself, weaving through the bustling equipment workers and club personnel. I smiled welcomingly at him from across the room. Nicky let out a sigh and ran his fingers through his short, dirty blonde hair.

"It's not the same," Nicky's normally happy go lucky attitude was absent now. Tim nodded, understanding what the fellow producer was going through. Though I didn't fully comprehend the difference, I took this time to speak up.

"I can go get them if you want, Nick," I offered, a kind smile playing on my lips. I noticed Tim's eyes trailing me from being my boyfriend's shoulder. "The hotel is just down the road, I could be back in fifteen minutes."

"I can go with her," Tim volunteered, "you know, to make sure nothing happens to her," he shot me a grin. Nicky begrudgingly nodded and bit down on his bottom lip so hard I feared he would draw blood.

"I love you," he said, his voice loud and clear before pressing his lips roughly against mine. I smiled into the kiss. Unfortunately, the kiss ended before I was ready for it to be over. "Don't be too long, I'm up in an hour."

"I love you," I repeated his words back at him and then spun on my heel with Tim hot on my trail.

We walked in silence for a few blocks and I was reminded of his striking beauty. His long hair was covered by a black beanie, spare, of course, a few wisps that stuck out of the bottom. Even in the night, his blue eyes sparkled unbelievably. I always wondered what it would be like to be with Tim, had we put our feelings to the test way back when. But we didn't and now he was merely an old friend who just happened to introduce Nicky and I.

Once in the hotel room, I quickly spotted Nicky's expensive headphones laying on the bed precisely where he had left them. I snatched them up quickly then turned back to the door, but something stood in my way. Tim laughed.

"I missed you, Ad," his Swedish accent was thick as he spoke lowly. He pulled me into his chest and held me tight...probably for a moment too long. When he released me, I smiled brightly up at him, squinting my eyes as his gaze smothered me.

"I missed you, Timmy," I told him genuinely, looping my arm through his.

"Shall we?" I giggled causing him to smirk down at me. A blush tickled my cheeks, but I quickly turned my head away from him and led him to the door.

I was grateful to be back in the company of such a good friend. Tim knew me like no one else did and he was always there to pick me up when I fell. People go searching their whole lives to find someone like him and I was lucky enough to have him served on a silver platter to me. Even if I had to swallow any forbidden feelings that could arise.

Maybe it was because Nicky had been so focused lately. He barely had time for me, and while I knew to expect that when I got involved with such a devoted musician, it was still taking it's toll on our relationship. I craved attention; the exact type of attention Tim has always been willing to show me.

I shook those thoughts from my head as we entered the club, which was now beginning to be flooded by bodies who were ready to party. It left me wondering how these guys did it. There was a new party in a new location every night. Nothing ever slowed down and I was beginning to feel incredibly jet lagged.

"Avicii!" Screams from a crowd waiting outside the doors behind the velvet rope caught both of our ears and I finally realized Tim had his hand resting at the small of my back. He pulled it away in an instant and sent me apologetic eyes before looking back to his fans.

"You go, I'll find Nicky," I encouraged him with a small smile forced at my lips. He nodded, and promised he'd meet me at the bar before Nicky's set starts. With a sigh, I turned around and found myself flashing my pass to get backstage.

"Hey," I breathed out, smiling at my boyfriend as I held out his headphones. He stopped his conversation and an impossibly large grin stretched at the corners of his lips.

"You're the best, baby," he told me, leaning over to press his mouth against mine. I giggled into his kiss, feeling the burning sensation of eyes on us. He pulled away, looking slightly embarrassed by his sudden public display of affection, but still wrapped an arm around my waist, pulling me into his side.

"Guys, this is my girlfriend Adelina," he introduced me to a couple, but I didn't bother to catch their names. I just sent them my signature captivating smile before excusing myself to the restroom.

Only I didn't go to the ladies room. Instead, I found myself sitting on a barstool and ordered a drink when Tim took a seat beside me. His hood was now up, covering most of his face in hopes to avoid being spotted by another fan. I looked at him sideways.

"Welcome back," I joked. He smiled widely, ordering two shots. I took mine with ease but still chased it with my Jack and coke. "You must be trying to get me drunk." He let out a perfect, airy laugh.

"So what if I am?" He retorted, sending a wink my way. I forced the warm feeling that was bubbling in my stomach away and blamed it on the alcohol.

I turned in my seat as Nicky's name was announced, followed by an explosion of loud cheers. Nicky glanced in my direction for a moment, so I blew him a kiss. He smiled to himself before beginning to mix his first song.

As usual, Nicky's set was mind blowing and every fan in the place had a blast. And me? Well I was beyond drunk by the time an hour had come to a close. Nicky finished with a song that was just dropped on Protocol Records that I didn't know yet, but the crowd seemed to love it.

I waited patiently with Tim while Nicky got cleaned up. I was sure he'd want to let loose after such a great set for his last night in Miami. This city was almost like a second home to Nicky. We seemed to be here more than anywhere else in the world.

Tim ordered us yet another round of shots; that beautiful drunken smile permanently gracing his face. I tipped back the glass gratefully and laughed loudly at something he said. Someone caught my eye in mid laugh.

My eyes connected with Nicky's as he took a step towards us. He stopped dead in his tracks and simply sent a short nod in my direction. I smiled at him and turned back to Tim to tell him that Nicky was done. But when I turned back, my boyfriend had disappeared in the crowd.

Confused, I returned my attention back to the bar and waited, figuring he got pulled away by a fan. And I waited some more. But Nicky never came back. And eventually, I watched as Sander lugged a bag of equipment, including Nicky's laptop bag. I pushed through people until I got to him.

"Have you seen Nick?" I asked him over the crowd. It was then that I realized Tim had accompanied me in my quest to find my boyfriend. Sander send me a quizzical look, and he seemed just as confused as I was.

"He left to go to another club almost an hour ago, Addy. He said he was taking you with him," he informed me. Instantly, my world began to spin and once again, I blamed it on the hard liquor that was burning my stomach lining. I thanked the manager, but I was certain he didn't hear me over the blasting music anyway.

Without a second look at either of the two foreign men, I worked my way through the throngs of drunk people that surrounded me. Once outside in the cool night air, I pulled my cellphone from my bra. I dialed Nicky's number and was disappointed when the call went straight to his voicemail. Not bothering to leave a message, I hung up with a sigh.

"Everything okay?" The Swede asked, appearing at my side, reminding me of a loyal puppy. Maybe I was just too drunk, but the city lights reflected in the tears that were steadily welling up in my eyes.

"Yeah, I think I'm just gonna go back to my room and go to sleep," I told him, wrapping my arms around his middle. "It was great seeing you, Timmy."

I didn't wait for a response and I didn't turn around when he yelled my name. I just continued on back to the hotel, wondering why my boyfriend had just left me waiting for him.
