For Better or for Worse
VI
Alex was more than happy as he went on to clean the rest of the house, he seemed to have an extra spring in his step as he practically skipped to each room. In every room he cleaned, he hummed a different song and more often than not it was one that one could associate with being in love. Not for a moment did Alex think that he actually was in love, but he did have strong feelings for his employer, and of course he still felt terribly guilty for feeling like this when there was a perfectly respectable young woman who was actually very much in love with Jack, and in Alex’s eyes she was far more deserving of Jacks love and companionship far more than he did. The thing is though, there was no way he was going to turn down having an affair with Jack, not with the feelings he has for the more privileged man.
Alex’s happy mood clearly showed throughout the rest of day since Zack approached him with a smirk when the staff were having their evening meal and said; “You’re very gleeful today. What happened, did you get some special time with the masters son?” He smirked and looked to Alex, who in turn only looked down and blushed, not really knowing what to say to his best friend. “I know you like him, Lex.” Zack chuckled and clapped his hand down on Alex’s shoulder “Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone, but I do expect full details.” He lowered his voice towards the end of the sentence so nobody else in the kitchen could hear. Alex looked to his friend for a few seconds before nodding.
“Not here though.” He mumbled and stood up, he glanced along the table again before motioning for Zack to stand up before leaving the room and making a beeline towards their bedroom, he thought that it might be the safest place to talk. Once he got there, he sat on the bed and waited for Zack to come in and close the door, which he did a few seconds later.
“Now tell me everything.” The buff man said much like a schoolgirl before sitting down on his own bed.
Alex took a deep breath and gathered his thoughts together before he started to speak. “So, as you’ve probably guessed, I really kind of like the masters son, Master Barakat.” He looked up to Zack and waited for some acknowledgement before he went on, “I guess that all of this started the other day, the day he got engaged to that Miss Leydiah O’Brian. After dinner he had left the dining room and come into the drawing room where I was laying the fire, and I didn’t notice he was in there at first, but when I saw that he was I started to panic because I’m not really meant to be seen by the family, but he told me that it was okay and that I should carry on with what I was doing, so I did so.” He once again looked up to Zack to make sure that he was still following. “After I managed to stop panicking, I looked to the young master and noticed that he didn’t really look all that happy, so I called him out on it and he said he just had a very eventful night. He then asked me who I was so I told him. He then apologised and left me to carry on laying the fire.”
“And the next time?” Zacks eyes were shining brightly as he sat on the edge of the bed in complete amusement, he hadn’t heard a tale like this in such a long time and to know that it was actually true was almost too much to bare for the younger man.
“Well, the next time just so happened to be the next day when I was cleaning the billiard room.” He took a moment to relax himself and recall what happened. “He came into the billiard room and he must have been standing there for a few minutes because I jumped when I saw him.” He bit his lip and blushed at the memory. “He gave little conversation and went straight into the reason as to why he had been looking for me. He wanted me to go out with him while he drank.” Zack raised an eyebrow at this, but Alex only shook his head. “Trust me, it certainly wasn’t to please me because when we were in one of the bars, he had his hands all over a prostitute.” So maybe saying he had his hands all over the prostitute was over exaggerating just a little bit, but right now Alex didn’t really care. “I had to convince him to leave the prostitute and go home, which was kind of hard to do, but for some reason he just gave in and looked at me after a while.” He bit his lip with a shy smile. “It was the first time that I felt that we had a connection.
Zack practically squealed and moved closer to Alex’s bed, urging to go on. “Did you kiss? You kissed him then didn’t you? I know it, you did!”
Alex only chuckled slightly and shook his head, “No, we didn’t kiss. Instead I helped him to get home because he was a little bit drunk and could barely walk.” He smiled at the memory. “Once we got back to the house, I helped him up to his room and helped him into bed.” He bit his lip gently and looked to Zack. “This is where the scandal comes in.” He couldn’t help but to chuckle when he saw Zacks eyes sparkle in delight. “I put a bowl next to his bed, just in case he was ill during the night, and I was about to stand up and leave the room when he wrapped his arms around my neck and kissed me.” He bit his lip with a grin and a blush. “I kissed back for a few seconds until I realised what I was doing. I pulled back quickly and rushed back down here to bed. It was playing on my mind all night.”
Zack grinned and moved so he was now sitting next to Alex. “So that brings us up to today. What happened this morning?”
Alex nodded and bit his lip, “Well, I was once again laying the fire in the drawing room when he came in, he noticed me there and we conversed awkwardly for a few minutes until he finally brought up what had happened last night. At this point I started to panic and apologise and tell him that it was all my fault and that I shouldn’t have taken advantage of him like that, I also beg him to not dismiss me because I really need this job. He then pulled me into his arms and hugged me, and Zack, I’ve never felt safer in my whole life.” He smiled a little bit before he continued to tell Zack about his and Jacks conversation.
“The next thing I knew, Master Barakat telling me about how he felt towards me, and I told him that I felt the same way, but there was no way that we would be able to pursue a relationship. He then told me that it was possible for us to do so if we did it privately, and at first I was hesitant but now I think it was the best decision I’ve ever made.” Alex grinned and looked to Zack, who only grinned and hugged Alex.
“I’m so happy for you!” He gushed, Alex smiled and nodded and pulled back from Zack.
“You can’t tell anyone though, okay? I don’t want to think of the consequences if anybody found out.” Zack only nodded and put his hand over his head.
“I promise that I won’t tell a soul.”
Alex sighed in relief and nodded “Thank you.”

Later on that night, Alex was finding it hard to drift off so he decided to take a walk around the gardens to hopefully wear himself out a little bit. He had barely been walking for five minutes when he felt someone wrap their arms around his waist and spin him around. Alex had to bite his lip to stop himself from screaming, but he soon realised who it was when he felt lips pressing against his temple.
“You shouldn’t be out this late, even in these gardens it’s not safe out. I would dread to think anything bad happening to you.” Jacks familiar voice spoke into Alex’s ear, Alex only grinned and looked up to Jack, not bothering to comment on the fact he was also out at this time of night.
“Sorry, I just couldn’t get to sleep.” He sighed and rested his head on Jack’s shoulder. Jack only nodded and tightened his grip on Alex.
“What’s wrong, is there something on your mind?” He led Alex over to a bench and sat on in, pulling Alex down into his lap.
“I guess I’m just worried about us, I’m worried about people finding out about us.” He took Jacks hand and started to play with his fingers.
“Why are you worried? Have you told somebody who might tell another?” Alex only shook his head in response and sighed softly.
“No, I’ve only told my closest friend, Zack. I know that he won’t tell anybody because he is far too happy for me to spoil it.” Jack nodded and kissed Alex’s cheek carefully before he started to speak.
“You’re worrying over nothing, darling.” Alex couldn’t help but to blush at the pet name. “I promise you that everything will be okay and that nobody will find out.” Alex bit his lip and nodded and looked up to Jack.
“Promise?” He whispered pathetically.
“I promise.” Jack nodded before pressing a kiss to Alex’s head. “Now I think you need a good night’s sleep, so I will escort you in and make sure that you get to your room safely. After that, I want you to clear your head of every little worry you have and get a good night’s sleep, okay?” He looked down to Alex who nodded and looked up to Jack with a tired smile, “Come on then” He whispered and helped Alex to stand up.
Jack did just as he promised, he walked Alex to his room and gave him a good night kiss and sent him to bed. Alex did as Jack said and tried to clear his head of all of his worries, and sure enough he had one of the best night’s sleep he had ever had.
Maybe Jack was better for him than he thought.
