Fishtail Braid

The fishtail braid can be a really cute, refreshing, and surprisingly simple alternative to the normal plait. This braid is one of the few hairstyles I can wear when I’m working because it keeps my hair out of my face while still looking relatively fashionable.

For this braid, all you really need is a hair tie, but some texturizing spray or gel may help you out as you learn to do this braid because it helps keep you from mixing up the sections of hair.

  1. Pull your hair to the side as you would if you were braiding your hair normally.

  2. Instead of dividing the hair into three sections as you would with a traditional braid, separate the hair into two sections.

  3. Take a small chunk of hair from the outer portion of one of the two sections and pull it over, adding it to the inner portion of the other section.

  4. Repeat by doing the same thing to the other section: take a small chunk from the outer portion of the section and add it to the inner portion of the opposite section.
  5. Continue this pattern until you’ve reached the end, then tie your hair off with an elastic.

For a more secure fishtail, keep the hair pulled tightly as you braid. For a more textured and messy look, you may want to braid more loosely or tug at the fishtail until you get the desired look.
