Racerback Tank

I really love this method of turning an old t-shirt into a racerback tank. I’ve done this with so many of my old band tees to convert them to looser tanks that I can wear to the gym and to work during the summer. It’s a great way to repurpose old shirts that you no longer wear on a regular basis but still don’t have the heart to throw out or donate.

For this racerback tank, all you need is an old t-shirt and a good pair of scissors.

  1. First, cut off the neckline of the tee. You may want to modify the neck by cutting it into a v-neck or widening it a little.
  2. Next, cut off the sleeves. You’ll probably want to thin out the straps a little just to give the tank a better shape.
  3. Flipping the shirt over to the back side, cut the neckline in the back lower, creating a deep v to form the racerback.
  4. The next step is to cut off the bottom hem of the shirt.
  5. After you’ve cut off the hem, cut off a section above the hem and cut it into a long strip.
  6. At the base of the racerback v at the back of the shirt, tie the shoulders back with the strip you just made. Continue to wind the strip around the back of the shirt, then tie it off with a knot.
