I wish I found this article back when I had vibrant hair colours, because this has some great advice that I could have used at the time. I was doing everything wrong to maintain my hair in the shower, I always have the water pretty hot and I wash my hair almost every day. I’ve never heard of demi-permeant hair dye but I sure would have used it back then if I knew about it because having to constantly buy bottles of dye and touch up my hair was one of the reasons I went back to my natural color. I always used Fudge Paintbox and Crazy Colour by Renbow, which are both semi-permanent.
I’ll definitely remember these tips if I ever decide to dye my hair again Cute

As a hair stylist I approve this article. Except for using the drug store products, fashion colours are the exception. When I used to use funky colours I love Special Effects. For red I will use TIGI Colour 0/66 Mix Master with the 8.5 volume developer of course that's strictly professional, and isn't a wash out.

I strongly suggest salon shampoos and conditioners to go along with any colour.

You don't need a lot. I have boob length hair, and I use 2 dime size amounts of shampoo. Do one 'lather' around rinse and repeat. You will not get a good lather the first time, the second time you will compared to the first. For the conditioner I use a quarter size amount, put on the ends and worked through, and left on for 2 minutes minimum!

Awesome! Now if you have some tips for fashion colors for dark haired folks like myself, I would die happy. My hair is too thick to bleach at home by myself and even when I'm just hoping for a tint it fails. I've never tried demi dyes though, so I might give that a shot first and see how it goes. But thanks for the tips! If/when I do find some colors that stick I'll be prepared. :)

For some reason whenever I mixed my dye and conditioner together it bled all over the place once I rinsed it out. So when I shampoo my hair on the, "Repeat," part I just mixed it in with my shampoo and let it sit. :x

I've never used SFX so I couldn't give much of a review on that. I live in the US and, at the time, I couldn't get their Hot Lava hair dye because they didn't ship to the US and eBay charged like $20+ shipping. Now that they have a US website I might check it out...

SFX dye is amazing - you can treat the Atomic Pink dye they use pretty much like a permanent colour. Last time I had it in I was washing my hair every 1-2 days (and I shampoo twice usually) and I only really had to top up the colour every 4-6 weeks when I lightened my roots.

And if you're going to mix your colour with anything make it conditioner not shampoo, a conditioning treatment is even better. Shampoo is basically hair soap and is designed to strip things away from your hair, while conditioner is a moisturiser and designed to put things back in.

It was delicious. But as I was dunking it in my milk, a good portion of my jelly plopped out and went straight to the bottom of my glass.

I have done it myself, which was the whole point of saying "normally" instead of always.

I've probably only ever had my hair dyed 3 times by a professional, so this article is pretty much directed towards DIY hair dyers. Sorry.

Ah, I've never even thought about mixing dye with a colour preserving shampoo. Next time I colour my hair I am going to do that. I mean, red stayed in my hair forever, maybe because I already have a bit of red hair anyway, but it was so pretty. Favorite those was this greenish colour I had, it was faded but it looked really nice. I can't name any brands because I normally get my hair coloured professionally since it takes a lot to colour my hair.

I've had many colors in my hair from purple to pink to orange to blue I found the the purple splat (can get at any drug store) lasts a while and even comes with a bleaching kit. The orange didn't stay very well but it was a different brand and it could have been from the general color. I have also used ultra violet Manic panic but wasn't too happy with how fast it faded. I have to say my favorite was the rockabilly blue by manic panic. Its their strongest color so it stays in a long time and looks awesome. So I've learned the fade time can also depend on brand and the color also
