Written well and originality or not, some will enjoy it and others won't.
I was actually one of those people that didn't exactly know proper grammar or punctuation when i first started writing and posting it and i caught ten tons of hell about it. But then again how could one know proper spelling, grammar or punctuation when they teach their self how to read? I always knew my stuff when writing about a band or some other fandom but that obviously wasn't enough because if something isn't perfect then people have to be giant douches and make someone feel bad about what they love to do.
I've actually saw where a girl QUIT writing because of a rant from somebody that didn't like the fact that the girl didn't know proper grammar.
My point here is: Telling someone how bad their writing is is absolutely bullshit. If you'd like to help someone improve their writing, go ahead, help them out and point out their mistakes but don't make them feel bad about something they enjoy doing.

Even though bad fanfiction can be refreshing to read (you know, it's refreshable to laugh from time to time) it would still be nice if there was some more decent fanfiction around. Thank you for this article, not only did it enlighten me, but I'm hoping it'll also enlighten someone else...

    Great article.

But people are still gona hate it if they want, even if you follow those rules. Sad how judgmental people are when it comes to literature, really.

This was a great article! I've always struggled with that fine line in fanfiction and it's the reason why I've kept all my fanfiction ideas on the back burner. I'm always wondering if I'm writing this story right and if the characters are believable. Thank you for writing this. It gave me a nice refresher on how to properly write fanfiction.

I don't know how many hours I've spent trolling through pages of terrible fan-fictions. Poor grammar, spelling and general laziness to follow at least one of your (notably worthwhile) rules is a greater epidemic than the plague. Originality and intelligence shouldn't be hard to come by, if only there were more authors willing to express their own personality instead of recycling the same haphazardly thrown together rubbish.

I would like to think that I am a part of the 30% who actually knows how to hit the key points of a story when it comes to fan-fiction. Yea, it is kind of lame that I am an 18 year old writing fan-fiction but you know what, I don't care. I find it rather pleasing imagining characters I might have fallen in love with doing whatever I want them to do without taking away from the plot. I can see why people tend to want to avoid my story when I first tell them it is a fan-fic but it seems that 90% who look seem to enjoy it immensely due to the fact that it has that original feel that people look for.

I do agree with your article though, I do feel that preteen fanatics do tend to ruin it for us serious writers.

Definitely agree. I think it's great that so many people get so inspired by other stories, but it's hard to find fanfiction that really does justice to the original story/movie/etc. Especially when so many ideas in fanfiction just seem to get recycled from one preteen fangirl to the next.

Lovely article! Yes, I agree. A lot of fanfiction is bad. I don't know why but a lot of writers don't give a damn about writing like you're not texting and being ridiculously stupid. I'm pretty young and I have to admit that I've written some pretty horrible fanfiction when I was younger. So ashamed to see that... Anyways, when I write fanfiction, I try to be as in character as possible and follow all plotlines unless it's an alternate universe. Anyways, great article! :D

I really liked this article. I agree a lot with the whole "Oh, you write fanfictions, so you suck" kind of thing. So many times I've tried to find something worth reading, but everything is written by little thirteen/fourteen year old's that either don't know how to use grammar properly, don't know anything about the band/movie character, or simply know that the person is hot/popular so they want to write something about them to get views. Don't get me wrong, I've read some AMAZING things by fourteen year olds, and I've read horrible things by people older than me. So it really has less to do with age, and more to do with the knowledge that the person has. Once again, I thought this article was well thought out and helpful :)
