Mainstream, I'm sure everyone already knows, is when the majority of society follows a specific trend, it is deemed 'mainstream'. Many people want to be original, not like everyone else. (Example: you go to a party where everyone is wearing red and you wear yellow. you stand out. you are different. you are unique and are thinking for yourself instead of following the crowd.) Not everyone wants to be a copied clone of a barbie doll. Some people try to keep their originality, but then so many people start following a certain trend that was once unique, and those people are forced to change yet again to become their own person. It's very tiresome and sometimes, downright annoying.

Wow, this article is kind of lame, I'm not gonna lie.
You make it sound like there's no other optio but to conform, or there's no way that a person can be truly can be original, which in my opinion, is false.
People can be unqiue and nonconformist by dressing completely different, having different hobbies then their peers, and things like that. Just because you shop at Forever 21 like most girls doesn't mean that your conforming, because you might have a different type of style, but still like to shop at stores that teens usually shop at. So you making conforming and mainstream things sound super general, and that no one can be original unless they come up with their own ideas.
Whih is bullshit. :|

Your article is alright, but I think you're looking at conformity and non-conformity as two completely SEPARATE things. Like, you're either one or the other. I don't think this is the case at all. Plus the thing about how liking old music now is still conformity because those groups were popular in their time? Well, it's not the "in" music now so it's not really conformity.
I don't really know how to get across what I think. I understand what you're saying, but I think you're looking at everything a bit too literally, if you get me.

When people consider someone a conformist, it's because they follow someone else.
That's where the term "be a leader, not a follower" comes from.
You don't have to be a hermit to nonconform.
Nonconforming can be as simple as facing the other way in the elevator, or refusing to smoke a joint when everyone else in the room is getting high.
You're article, although truthful and well-thought, makes nonconforming much too general. I do agree that going to hot topic and buying a belt is the very opposite of nonconforming.
A conformist, in the bad terms that people use, is someone who thinks that enjoyment and obligation go hand in hand. I know that a conformist in it's true meaning isn't this, but there isn't really any other word to describe this kind of person. When people call someone a conformist, it's because this person is doing something they think they need to do.
So, I do think that in some situations conforming is a bad thing, but I agree that it's a natural human instinct in general.

haha excellent article! I often wonder those same things too! Usually music that is really good becomes mainstream, because people like it.

Haha, I think your article was witty and true. That's an exceedingly good combination. There's no way not to conform to something, and being yourself is the best you can do. If you're just being yourself, you have nothing to worry about. Conformity won't matter, but it will still exist.

Most 'mainstream music' annoys me. Not because it's popular though. I just don't like pop or rap, and that tends to be what's considered mainstream.

i like mainstream, i guess, if mainstream is abercrombie
but i also like hot topic
and i bet there are a lot if others who like abercrombie and hot topic
it's kind of like, there is more than one "mainstream", but no matter what you are apart of one of them
there are too many people on this planet for everyone to be "original"
and even if you are trying to be original and succeed, what's the point if you don't like what you wear, listen to, ect.?

Alright article, but poorly written... Conformity implies intention, and your ideas are somewhat scattered.
the truth is, most people are pretty stupid, so mainstream culture often reflects this

To be honest, I live life without the word "mainstream". I don't worry about it, I don't categorize things into it, I just plain don't.

I just live life and I find that to be a good method so far.

Awesome! Love the article lots =D
I always find that everybody who defines themselves as a 'non-conformist' is basically conforming to whatever style the other non-conformists came up with.
A little pointless, no?
