It's not like that up here in Reno maybe its just a southern Nevada thing. I mean they are doing budget cuts and what not but our test scores are still up.

It's so annoying to read that there's MORE school budget cuts underway... the books from my old school were literally falling aart as in pages were falling out and staplers and duct tape were being used to keep the books together. Some kids started bringing in their own stools because there aren't enough desks (no budget to replace the 20yr old ones and the classes were maxed out) BUT guess what everyone?!?! That's right they got COLORED NEWS PAPERS and new uniforms for the cheerleaders

As someone who's never even been to America, this was a very interesting read for me. And it was a very good article for raising awareness. I didn't actually know about this crisis, because, as far as I am aware, schools are well-funded where I am.

My favourite thing about this article though, I have to say, is the picture. The apostrophe in the word "schools," or rather "school's," just further proves your argument.

It's a well-written article.

Funding would help. It would also help if the goverment listened to it's teachers.

Okay, people. There's no need to ignorantly judge the entire country.

I just moved from Las Vegas to San Francisco and there is a MAJOR difference in education quality. My dad works in the school district as well and there are very few nights where he doesn't curse the government for reducing the education budget. We shouldn't take the money away from Medicare or public works, we should take it away from the ridiculously high salaries of government officials and stop keeping bad teachers due to tenure. And maybe homeland security could use a small cut- we are incredibly paranoid, after all.

I'm terribly sorry about the switch from American government to Nevadan. I originally wrote this for my English III class. I live in Las Vegas and it was "highly suggested" we add some information about our state's education.
Thank you for all the comments. I wasn't even aware this got approved until now.

America needs to get it's act together. I don't want to end up seeing my brother [he's in a public elementary school] end up working at a fast food restruant.

"I think America is already one of the most ignorant nations on this Earth. "
Why? Because the media portrays an extreme minority of mindless flag waving hypocrites? What a ridiculous judgement to make about an entire country.

I think America is already one of the most ignorant nations on this Earth. But it's also one of the most grounded - whether its policies are good or not.

It's not just important to have more teachers (and therefore smaller class sizes), but also to have quality teachers. I know I've never been one to seek help because I've had so many hostile, bitter people teaching it to me. It's just not right to force someone into putting him/herself out there only to get shut down (which has happened to me plenty of times).

Exactly; donating is a good idea, but where can the money come from?
Good article though, quite informative...though the sudden switch from focus on America to focus on just Nevada was a bit jarring.

That's the reason for taxes - I know taxes are horrid and terrible, but they are what help fund the nation and the government. Taxes help the local government fund the roads and Medicaid, but education is important to all. If we keep shutting down schools and firing teachers then we are violating human rights to provide education and security of employment.

*The unions are one to blame. Last year, when my former school district planned to lay off 110 teachers, teachers tried to negotiate with the unions to let the district lower their pays, just for one year (or more). the unions wouldn't let that happen.

Where exactly is all this money supposed to come from? Should we take it away from Medicare and the elderly generation that depends on it?Should we take it away from public works and have unsafe roads and sanitation? Should we take it away from homeland security?

It's just not as simple as giving money to schools, but taking it away from something else as well...
