You guys realize he didn't get suspended for smoking pot, necessarily. He got suspended for getting caught smoking pot...
Just like you go to jail if you're caught smoking pot. Or do you get a ticket? I'm not entirely sure (It varies by state, I believe.) Like, if you get caught high, the police will search you or your car, but if they don't find anything they won't make you go to jail... The only reason he got suspended was because there was proof... Lol

what's so bad about a little ganja?
it increases your lung capacity, and he IS a swimmer.

and anyway, the only reason it's illegal is because of racism.
same with every other drug. they were trying to keep certain groups of people from immigrating to america by making the drugs generically used by those races and nationalities illegal.

Yeah, I may seem a bit hyprocritical, in the last comment.
What I meant was I don't like people being ADDICTED to drugs.
If it's a one time thing it should be okay, I mean we only live once, right?
Why not do everything, even the bad stuff, just to be able to say been there done that.
So, I hope that eases any confusion with my earlier comment.

Sure, if I was given a joint of pure stuff, I'd smoke it, I wouldn't give it away or sell it.

He shouldn't have been suspended for that. That's pretty stupid to suspend him over. It wasn't that big of a deal.

Get over it. A joint is a joint, and it's blowing things completely out of porportion by suspending him. I mean, really, how many of kids belonging to people on the USA Swimming board (I can't remember what it is, exactly) have smoked weed? How many of them have smoked weed? Give the guy a break.

I think it's stupid that he's been suspended. It's not as if it would have enhanced his performance, if anything it would have made it worse!

Please people smoke pot everyday. I was just reading that article about Lil Wayne and he hasn't been busted like Phelps has. I'm sure I could follow around any celebrity or athelet and get photos of them doing much worse than smoking pot. I mean really are you so quick to turn your back on someone you use to admire? I'm sorry, but that says something about your character.

I think he should be completely kicked away. I used to be in love with him and he was a huge idol of mine. But being my straight edge self. He should burn. :]

Honestly, he's still an amazing swimmer, and wow, he smoked pot. Really, who cares? There were other people there doing pot, so why is the only one getting in trouble for it? I mean theres another article on the mainpage about Lil Wayne, he smokes pot--says it freely in fact and he's just free to go about his business. People look up to Lil Wayne just like they look up to Michael Phelps. United States Swimming shouldn't suspend him and take his finacial support.

Okay, I'm not saying that he should be excused or let off the hook for what he did, but suspending him? That's pretty weak. I mean, he's the best swimmer in the world, and he's not aloud to swim for three months? I mean, he's not going to care, he's going to just go with the flow and be back in the pool before we know it. If we want to send a message, fine him for the money. I'm not saying put him in jail, but make him pay the average amount someone has to pay in normal cases! He might be a celeb, but he still has to have at least a bit more punishment than just being dropped form endorsing a product and not being able to competevely swim for three months.
