While I liked the books, I know and understand that they are utter crap. Strip away all of the supernatural aspects of the story and all you have is a weak romance that could easily be found here on Mibba, written by 15 year olds.
Edward is a control freak. As the story progresses you're sucked in by the story and Meyer's did a very good job of making it addictive, but if you look deeper behind the outright story... there's some disturbing things. The whole saga is very anti-feminist. Bella gives up everything for Edward, she withdraws from her friends and family because of him - which is reminiscent of an abusive relationship - and she even gives away her humanity, all for him. Edward is extremely masochistic and while he doesn't want to hurt Bella, you get the feeling that it is entirely Bella's fault whenever he does. Because of Bella's sexual desires, she gets hurt but is complacent about it. The books are wrong and make a mockery of the feminist movement.
I'm almost ashamed that I write fics for Twilight, but I try my hardest to branch away from the the Cullens, and Edward who I actually despise.
I love the series so far, I'm only up to Eclipse, I just finished New Moon the other night. I try not to be one of those girls that are like "OMG EDWARD CULLEN IS SOOO GORJUZ!11!" I mean yeah he's insanely good looking but he IS just a fictional character. And I agree that he's controlling, he tells Bella what to do and what not to do. Another thing I found is that she goes on and on and on. She picks one subject and then for like a page and a half just goes on with examples and descriptions, it's like yeah I got the point now move on. Eh that annoyed me.
... So welcome to the literary side of Twilight? It's an addicting book, but if it's analyzed it's one of the worst books ever written. The first time I read it, I didn't really adore it, but I couldn't help but become addicted and I had a need to get through the book as fast as possible. But.. It sucks, really. The characters, the plot, everything is just... bad.
Yeah ... at first, when I started reading it, I didn't like it at all. Even now, as I'm reading the last book, I'm not entirely interested. I admit, it's alright, but I agree, it has no depth. She's always depressed all the time, and Edward doesn't let her do anything. As far as I know, no one can be that devoted to a boyfriend they've had for not even a year.
