I agree with this completely, the book and movie are seperate but to shamelessly admit, I fell for both of them... Bella wasn't being controlled in the first book, If anything she was being smart, Because what could she do against Edward? Like really the dude is SOOO much stronger than her, How could she of all people fight him off? Like really, some people need to stfu y'know? *sighs*
I applaude you for writing this journal... ^_^
(TO NOTE I ONLY READ THE FIRST BOOK, SO ANYTHING IN THE SECOND BOOK OR THIRD ETC... I HAVEN'T READ TO JUDGE!!!!) thankyou, end of note.
I agree! And her last name's spelt Meyer :] I agree about how Breaking Dawn was like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, both were very fanfiction-like.
Some girls are like this-they are smart, clever people who don't mind being "controlled" because its all part of being with the other person.
Obviously I can't speak to anyone else's relationship, and everyone has to decide their comfort level for themselves, but... that strikes me as a little dodgy, because controlling partners can easily become abusive partners, and also because AFAIK, none of the characters say anything to indicate that Edward's behavior is at all objectionable, or even unusual, within the context of "boy likes girl, girl likes boy back."
As I understand it, early on his behavior borders on stalking. Later, out of jealousy, he does something to her car to prevent her from going to see a friend. And throughout the story, Bella steadily loses contact with her own friends and family. All of those things throw up major red flags for me, but all the characters seem to think they're perfectly normal.
This sort of pattern isn't unusual in the romance genre, but it's still troubling, for obvious reasons. See Sarah Rees Brennan's "Pleasure Town Is Invite Only!", about rape apologism and normalization in romance novels, for some examples: http://tinyurl.com/czlcys
This is awesome. Thank you! I mean, I like Twilight, not the best book I've read, not the worst but at the end of the day, it is just a book and that's all it'll ever be, so people really need to calm down.
I actually started laughing while reading this. It's so true, at the end of the day it is a book. We all have things that we love but there no need to go so 'insane' for lack of a better word.
I love you for writing this (: I'm like you. I like Twilight, it's a fun read, but to be honest I didn't give a damn about it after I'd read it. It's not a lifestyle, people.
