How many people would a "Straight White Male Parade" piss off? - Comments

  • PEOPLE If you want to look at the freakin past with this crap,
Then we shall look at the past shall we?
Irish immigrants which were usually white,
    Were discriminated against...
Look in your 10th grade history books.
Now who hasn't told them that they can't do something?

Really what's it anyone else business what they do?
For once there'd be a parade for white people,
Even if it's just for males... ><
I think it needs to be white pride parade.... ^_^
    Fuck one gender, lol... :)

  • I've got to agree with vaginasaurus on every level.

  • I think it depends... Are they throwing candy at this parade? Because, you know, at some parades, they throw out candy. And if the answer to the first question is yes, then is it good candy?

... And on a serious note, I can see both sides. I think people should have pride about who or what they are regardless. But I also see the side that straight white males are the majority with the most power and prestige and so aren't looked down upon. People can debate it all they want, but when it comes down to it, gays are always looked down upon by the majority of society. If they weren't, they would have just as much legal right to get married.

  • Wouldn't piss me off. If no one gets in my way and throws a fit if I go to a gay pride parade, I don't have the right to tell anyone else they can't go to a parade for them.

  • Wouldn't piss me off. A parade's a parade. Who gives a crap whose having it? Everyone deserves the right to be proud of who they are and show it. *rolls eyes* The people here who say it'd piss them off because straight white males don't need a pride parade sound kind of dumb. Just my observation. What, straight white males aren't allowed to have pride? We should all shout to the world that we are who we are, and we're damn proud of it. That's just my opinion on the matter.

  • It would piss me off, for the reasons vaginasaurus listed. Straight white males don't need pride parades, because no one is telling them to be ashamed of themselves just for being straight white males.

  • v It's the implication that it would be a straight white male pride parade that I find offensive, because regardless of the intent of the organizers, that stated purpose would carry misogynist, racist and homophobic implications. Straight, white and male are already the default options, and nobody's telling those people it's shameful to be straight, white or male, whereas queer people, women, and people of color are frequently exposed to messages -- however subtle -- that tell them their identities and/or bodies are shameful, and statements of pride in queer, female and... er... of color?... identities are intended to counter that message.

If it was just a bunch of people deciding they wanted to march to celebrate beer and video games or whatever, and they didn't limit participation to straight, white or male people or any combination thereof, I probably wouldn't care. I might even attend, if I could drag along a couple of friends.

  • Ah poo. I had a really long comment about how this parade wouldnt be promotiong homophobia at all (you didnt imply this, I was just mentioning) and how it would just be fun (and I had some other points) but my computer spazzed.

I guess I could have really said that though. O:

I'm gay, and I thinkl that in Perth, Australia, A Straight White Male parade would be celbrated and as much fun as Mardi Gras and Pride. :)

  • Short answer: a lot. As to why, might I direct you to the comments on this journal? http://tinyurl.com/c3oe2z

Several people including myself explained why gay pride parades are necessary and straight pride parades are not. The reasons male and white pride parades would be not only unnecessary but also unacceptable are analogous.

I've got nothing against straight white men in and of themselves, and I think it's unfair of you to jump to the conclusion that someone who finds "straight pride", "male pride", and/or "white pride" offensive somehow has a grudge against people who fit those descriptions. I'm white, and I have a brother whose company I very much enjoy, and in high school I regularly hung out with a small group of straight white boys, mostly for the geeky conversation.

  • We should have one. my friend Josh wants one. he will make himself king of the white straight men and run around in a toga screaming about meat pies. :D

And yes. I realised that I hadn't really put anything of substance in my entry. xDDD

  • Haha. =)
The last bit of your Journal made me laugh.

I would go to a Straight White Male Parade. What would be wrong with it? I certainly see nothing wrong..
