Poetry & Rap are the same thing I agree but I personal like rap but I like anything that sounds good. But sometimes when the singers aren't talking about money, sex, ect I can relate to it more then any other music.

Rap is just a genre of poetry, just like sestinas or sonnets. Granted, it's a relatively modern genre, but that doesn't make it any less legitimate. It's non-prosaic collection of words set to a certain rhythm--that's the general definition of poetry (excluding free verse, of course). The kids in your class aren't idiots, they just have to be exposed to different kinds of poetry. They need to understand that poetry isn't just "Roses are red, violets are blue, blah blah blah...". Poetry can be amazing, and the most sincere, honest form of artistic expression, if you find the right poet. I like Anne Sexton myself, although I can't stand Robert Frost.
Personally I love rap as well. Kanye West and Jay-Z are my favorites, although in a pinch T.I. or Eminem will do. Nothing by 50 Cent, though, I can't stand him.

I've never got into rap, but someday I hope to check out some underground stuff.

I guess I consider all rap to be poetry but not all poetry would sound good rapped, and a lot of poetry isn't meant to be rapped.

I do consider it a form of music.

Well, a lot of rap is kind of like poetry. I personally also hate rap. It's often repititious, hard to understand, and full of cussing, meaningless words, and drugs, sex, and jail time. Hem. However, I do think that it does require some talentto rap. But in my mind, I don't really consider it music either.

Ok, it does take some talent to rap. Some rap can be good. But what I'm referring to in my entry is mainly mainstream rap, so you know.

They are basically the same thing.
Rap isn't my thing. I don't really like it. But rap does take singing talent.

    Yea,
I don't like rap either (Mostly because of people like Lil Wayne and their degrading lyrics) but I think you need some talent to rap well.
Seriously, I could never rap well. (:

Not all poetry rhymes. Not all rap rhymes.
But I do agree with you - rap is poetry. All lyrics are basically poetry until there is music added to them, or they are sung, etc.

All music with lyrics can be degrading, though. It's not just rap. I agree that a lot of the more mainsteam rap songs have degrading lyrics, but...a lot of rap doesn't. A lot of rap is really, really good. And while they're not singing, it does take a lot of talent to be a good rapper. There is so much control that's needed with that kind of thing...

Yeah, I think all music with lyrics is pretty much poetry, it just all depends on the way the write AND sing it when it's a song =)

Poetry and rap are the same thing.
And only some rap is degrading because I have similar thoughts on the subject. But I guess it depends if it has a good beat against it if you like it or not. It's like television without sound. With sound is better, without.... what's the real point? I like both, but they kind of have a point.
